The Reason We Haven't Heard About Child of Eden on PS3

PS3 version will be worth the extra months of wait, says Q Entertainment.

Child of Eden's coming to PS3 in a few months, only because Q was tied up on Xbox 360.
Child of Eden's coming to PS3 in a few months, only because Q was tied up on Xbox 360.

There's been a surprising amount of silence about Child of Eden for PlayStation 3. The silence has lead some to speculate, as gamers will do without details, about whether Microsoft had paid for it.

"No money hats," joked Q Entertainment producer and former games writer James Mielke on the latest 8-4 Play podcast.

Rather, Mielke pointed out, Q Entertainment has a small team of roughly 30 people working on the project. With Child of Eden on Xbox 360 out the door, the studio's now working on PS3.

"We're doing everything in-house, we're not farming anything out," he said. "Now, we're working full-steam on the PS3 version. Despite the fact that the 360 was the lead SKU, the PS3 version is coming along very quickly."

As for whether the extra time will result in other features or Move support, Mielke was coy.

"There's nothing I can really say about it," he teased, "except that it will definitely be worth the couple months that people have to wait for the PS3 version to get finished. People with PS3s, people with nice TVs, people with all kinds of control options...it's going to be really cool."

One could imagine Child of Eden in 3D would look pretty damn cool.

The hosts also asked about how several PS3 releases have come bundled with some older titles, thanks to the Blu-ray's extra storage capacity. What about Rez HD, which is only on Xbox 360?

"We get a lot of emails about that, and that may actually change in the future," he said. "There's nothing that we've actually started. But there's no reason that we're not doing a PS3 version, except that we only have a certain amount of resources."

Keep sending those emails. You can listen to the 8-4 Play podcast on their website. If you're interested in hearing more about gaming from Japan's point of view, it's worth checking out.

Its a great game though! Even though I own it on 360 with Kinect already. I'd love to see it with Move and 3D!

I don't have a PS3, and I don't particularly like 3D anything, but Child of Eden would be amazing in 3D.

With Rez and Child of Eden, it does seem a bit like the Emperor's New Clothes (similar to the ICO / SotC mass debate). We all have to say we love the style but know that there isn't much substance below the surface.

£30 for an hour of fun doesn't sound like a tremendously good deal. Gaming should strive for higher experiences than shooting someone in the face but there does need to be more than trippy visuals to the soundtrack of a half-hearted chill-out mixtape.

Nah, I just don't want to have to buy a disc for what is a glorified visualizer. I don't mind paying full price for it. I just want it to sit with my other psn titles and just be able to jump into it easily without swapping discs.

If it comes with Rez I might plunk down $50, but I'll probably wait for it to get cheaper.

You know he's gotta be talking about 3D, and I would assume that's it.
...though for this game I might consider 3D to qualify as "worth the wait".

Also, in Q's defense, I beat the game last night and when you see those credits roll, it really hits you with how small that dev team is.

A PSN release with 3D and Move would be nice. A blu-ray release with 3D, Move, and Rez HD would be totally worth my $50 or $60.

The recent 8-4 play love on the site is awesome (Brad talked about the nintendo episode during the Zelda 3DS quick look).

I forget does the Move have vibration/rumble in the controller? Or Sub controller?

I doubt the PS3 version will be any cheaper. And as much as I like what I've seen of the game (and I enjoyed Rez) I still think the game is overpriced at $50. I'd like to buy it, but I wouldn't play it enough to justify the full cost. Bummer.

I'm thrilled with the Child of Eden experience on Kinect, but 3D with this game would be legitimately great if that's where they're headed with the PS3 version.

Oh i don't give two shits about Child Of Eden. You know what, i'd rather play the PS3 exclusive game "Dyad". In fact Dyad > Child Of Eden.

If they put Rez on there it would cement my purchase. My hate of XBLM has kept me away from Rez HD, but I'd love to fill that little hole in my collection.

A 3D version of Child of Eden would maybe make me consider picking up a 3D TV. In other news, I just realised I might be clinically insane.

3D Rez HD packed in would be cool. I don't have a 3D TV, but maybe in the future... ah well. I've been playing it on 360 and it is great, but seriously, they could make some small changes to make it better.

Get rid of the locked levels! I hate the fact that I have died at the end of the Beauty stage about five times, get no stars for my effort and have to do the same level again! And when I did earn enough stars for the next level I can't unlock it until I beat beauty. It's so Japanese - artificial locking of content. I just wanna play the later levels! Lock the final stage, that's ok, but the level progression is really bad. Fix this for PS3!

Ah well, no more complaining. It's a great game anyway.

I'm not sure I buy that it's "artificial" locking. I mean, in most games you beat the earlier/easier levels to play the later/harder ones (from Mario to Call of Duty). ;)

If there was a game that would get me interested in 3d this would be it but not not enough to spend the cost on a 3D tv as it stands,  i'll wait untill they come down in price some more before i do.

Well, I'm assuming the game will at least have move support. Which will definitely make the game worth trying on the PS3 at the very least.

I'd say it's artificial because you beat the first stage, then the second ... but then have to do the first again and maybe the second again if you want to progress. It's the same with later stages. You can earn enough stars to unlock a new stage, but unless you beat the one before it you can't play it. So scrap the star system and let me play the game start to finish. It'd be like if Call of Duty let you beat the first mission, then the second mission, then told you to go back to the start and do it better or you can't progress. Honestly, like Jeff said on the podcast, the first time you have to back track in that game is the first time you put that controller down and play something else until you can be bothered to return. Bad design in an otherwise great game.

That is a fair way of looking at it. I can see your point.

I'm not as fussed by it because the audience for this niche game is someone who wants to play the levels over and over. So having the game force me to do that is not a big deal.

I also am not one who has time to play the whole thing through in one sitting so perhaps that sitting might become boring if it includes several playthroughs of the same levels.

i'm not so sure i'd count on 3D happening, though.
