THQ Still Planning on Releasing Games In 2014, Despite What You Might Have Heard

The publisher flatly denies a weekend rumor that had the publisher cancelling multiple major projects.

THQ says you'll still be able to Warhammer online (40,000, not that OTHER Warhammer online) at some point in the future...BUT FOR HOW LONG?!?

If you were paying attention to Twitter at all this weekend, amid the deluge of Golden Globes-related live tweeting and the occasional reference to Lana Del Rey on SNL (it really was that bad, you guys), you may or may not have noticed a sudden upswing in mournful discussion regarding publisher THQ and its continued existence. Specifically, the rumors claimed that THQ's upcoming Warhammer MMO project, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online had been cancelled, and that the publisher was in the process of aborting all of its projects currently targeted for 2014.

Considering THQ's recent stock woes--it's been trading at about 66 cents as of last week--the sudden influx of doom and gloom surrounding the company wasn't altogether unbelievable. However, despite all of that, THQ representatives took a break from watching Meryl Streep's acceptance speech to take to the Internet tonight and assure everyone that 2014 is still very much a year in which THQ plans to sell video games, and that no decisions have been made regarding the aforementioned MMO, so please for the love of god stop saying anything about that before the investors wake up on Monday and stomp what's left the company's face into Wall Street's famed "curb of the unprofitable."

"THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO. As part of the ongoing review of our business, we have made decisions to ensure that the company is strategically addressing the most attractive markets. As we have previously announced, we have dramatically reduced our commitment to the kids' boxed games sector which leads to a significantly more focused release schedule moving forward. Our slate for calendar 2012 and beyond is focused on high-quality core games and continues to build our digital platform and business. We are excited for our pipeline of original and high-quality content along with our relationships with some of the best talent in the industry."

The rumor originated from the barely navigable Twitter feed of Kevin Dent, the head of the IGDA's "Mobile Special Interest Group," which somehow is a real game industry thing and not the name of a CBS crime drama. Dent stated that Warhammer was canned and that he had heard THQ had gone to the trouble of actually returning the intellectual property of various license-holders in order to start wiping 2014's slate clean.

Somewhere in-between replying to what I can only assume is literally every single person who has tweeted at him today and discussing his plan for a Counter-Strike LAN party this evening, Dent went ahead and backpedaled on all of that, repeating THQ's statement and stating when asked that all his information came from friendly sources inside THQ's various studios, while deftly avoiding every request to explain who those sources were. Because apparently after firebombing what few remaining vestiges of THQ's stock value were left with seemingly incorrect rumors, that would just be, like, wrong, or something. You can read all of his various statements and responses here. Just be forewarned: dude tweets a lot.

Anyway, the point is, THQ is all about releasing core games in 2014, and as far as you know, they're still making a Warhammer MMO, because they haven't stated otherwise--or, at least, haven't clearly stated otherwise. So please, please, please stop telling everyone they're not doing those things, because if the investors hear enough people grumbling about it they will magically appear and gut the company like the goddamned Candyman.

Oh...oh god. We're too late...

If there is ever a point where THQ falls apart I just hope that Relic makes it out in one piece.

That Dent guy is now trying to claim he never definitively said this, but he clearly claimed without reservation that THQ had cancelled all of their 2014. The denial after the fact may be worse than the act itself.

This Twitter argument may well be the funniest thing I've seen all week.

Somewhat related, here in the UK it has been impossible to find a copy of Saints Row: The Third for about three weeks now. I spoke with one employee of my local Game, who said it's the same with all THQ games at the moment: they're just not printing enough, possibly owing to the cost.

Amazon.co.uk has all three versions in stock:

Wait. Isn't there ALREADY a Warhammer MMO out? I swear I bought it... =(

The one mentioned here is Warhammer 40k, not just Warhammer.

Twitters power is scary sometimes.

You mean that if we really put our minds to it, we can sink the company?

Posted by Lurkero

Wow, I didn't like Marcus from Gametrailers before, but now I dislike him even more. "Kevin is my friend so obviously he would be more correct than someone representing the company you are talking about" is not a legitimate defense.

Rumors say one thing, THQ says another. Until proven otherwise by hard evidence, rumors no longer mean anything. End of story. Why would THQ even start canceling games for 2014? Most of them probly haven't even started production, even if the license if already there.

reading through his tweets, his self delusion is staggering

The best part is the fact that Marcus is the most abrasive, snarky guy on GameTrailers that, granted as poor as that community is, has not been that popular among the GT users. He would often just say "yah that game is balls whatever" if he didn't like something and often comment how he doesn't care that other people are bothered by his shitty attitude - and he's telling Alex he should have been more professional and less snarky.

Posted by Lurkero

@Humanity: Good point, I can't stand Marcus so I didn't even think that far into the issue. Extreme snark is exactly the type of personality he emits. Marcus chastises Alex over having a similar "attitude" when his friend is the one on the receiving end, however. He's a pure jerk.

I can't even bother to listen to Gametrailers podcasts anymore because I hate hearing Marcus and Shane (the top editor at GT) talk.

I love that somehow this news article served as a means to tell people a Warhammer 40k MMO is being made.

We've only known that forever.

This is all because Alex gave Saint's Row the Third a 4/5. Now we're all gonna die.

F'n Alex. Once again, you've killed us.

What movie is that thumbnail from? I can tell that the guy on the left is bill murray, but that's all.

On topic, holy balls! THQ is one of the few publishers I actually really like.

Alex said it in the article: Candyman.

The guys head is a photoshopped Brian Farrell - CEO of THQ

EDIT: Derp, I didn't read your post properly

"it's true what you heard...THQ has no dick."

Seriously though, I hope this isn't true. THQ actually does put out good stuff and I also don't want Relic and the 40K license picked up by someone like Activision. I wouldn't care if the 40K mmo gets scrapped as that thing sounds terrible, at least from a 40K fan perspective.

Posted by Humanity

@Lurkero: I got no issues with Shane, but Marcus does rub me the wrong way. When I used to go to GT a lot I thought Invisible Walls was a decent show and liked the chit chat but when Marcus came along he was the odd man out on everything which got annoying after a while.

Posted by Wacomole

Maybe this was all a ploy by someone to get some ultra-cheap THQ shares and then rake it in when the price rockets back up.

Well, there goes my hope of a good WWE game/new Red Faction.

Everybody buy Saints Row, that'll save them!

I had to click on this link since you had a GHOSTBUSTERS screen grab on the front page. :)

I only care about Saints Row. I'm not sure what I'd do if that series got gobbled up and spat out by EA :'(

Good, rather like what I see coming down the road from THQ.

@Makoto_Mizuhara_Sakamoto: I'm sorry, but that image is totally lost on me.

Also, I appreciate you doing work at 1AM, Alex. 'Specially when Candyman is involved.

Ever heard of the term 'yandere'?

Thank you Alex for being awesome.

@Makoto_Mizuhara_Sakamoto: Why did you do that? I don't want to see or hear anything about Mirai Nikki, that's poison for me.

But the yandere is calling out to you... OBEY!!!!!!

@KaneRobot: Fools... You're only supposed to have one suspender attached. *shaking head*

I rushed out and did just that earlier today, before I had heard the rumors had been squashed.

Good to hear they'll stick around, they do have quite a few great franchises.

@Makoto_Mizuhara_Sakamoto: Oh yes...I knew that chick looked familiar! (I believe I stumbled across her during one of my many tvtropes visits in the past). Thanks for the clarification.

I am going to be seriously put out if Dark Millennium gets canceled. I need to have an MMO to look forward to so that it can fail to meet my expectations, goddamnit!

Posted by ArcLyte

glad to hear the situation is not nearly as fucked as the internet hysteria made it out to be.

oh thank god.

Im hoping that this is some Gorddon Geko type shit, releasing possible false news to bottom out the stock only to be bought up in large quantities but some shady ass shell company, only to have the stock rebound some and make some serious dough.

.... I should call a stock broker.

Posted by ninjalegend

I had hoped Saints Row 3 did well for them, as Volition should be paid for that bit of awesome. So the publisher of one of Giantbomb's top 3 games of the year (and my own), who also brought solid titles like WW All Stars and Warhammer, is in financial trouble. While Mario and Sonic at the Olympics sells like gangbusters. It's times like these where I wonder "Why was I happy gaming went mass market?".

Posted by shakra

At $.66 a share how could you not buy thq stock?

Posted by Ketchupp

I would devour a 40k MMO.

Posted by vinsanityv22

This rumor was fucking stupid and came out of nowhere. THQ has never had a more promising stable of titles than recently - Darksiders, Saint's Row, UFC/WWE (especially All Stars), Warhammer, Homefront, etc. I have no idea where this rumor came from, but it was stupid and I'm glad THQ is putting an end to it.

You're a moron. If you haven't seen it, than don't form an opinion on it.

I'm glad it's just a rumor... THQ has been kicking the jams lately!

The internet? Blowing things grossly out of proportion and taking rumor and innuendo at face value? Get the fuck out! Next thing you know, you'll be telling me the world is round. Lies, I tell you, ALL LIES!

Of course THQ would say none of it's true so you can't really trust their word for it. And Kevin was just tweeting a rumour he had heard. Are people not allowed to do that anymore?

You can do it, however I do think it's unethical and irresponsible.

I'd love to be able to Warhammer Online!

I would love to see another open-world destructable Environment game like Red Faction: Guerilla. Unfortunately I don't see it happening. Still planning to get Saint's Row: The Third, but haven't yet.
