Ubisoft Responds to Assassin's Creed III Leaks by Just Up and Revealing its Cover Art [UPDATED]

After everybody already pretty much leaked the setting and protagonist of the publisher's latest time-travelling murder simulator, Ubisoft just reveals it all official like.

No Caption Provided

As you can see from the image on the side here, Assassin's Creed III's box art has officially been released by Ubisoft, and it confirms what everyone on the Internet has been buzzing about for the last couple of days: the lead character is of Native American descent, and the game takes place during the American Revolution.

All sorts of different art leaks had been popping up over the last day or two, some via a Best Buy employee posting promotional art sent to the store in anticipation of the reveal, and another via Game Informer's website (snagged by a NeoGAF user), which inadvertently posted a banner showing a new assassin holding a tomahawk and old-timey pistol against the backdrop of Washington crossing the Delaware.

And now we have confirmation of all of that. The lead character will be (at least partly) of Native American descent, and will be stabbing/shooting dudes against the backdrop of America's fight for independence. It's not that I hate the British or anything, but frankly, I'm quite looking forward to the notion of dropping a few tomahawks on a few Redcoat skulls. It'll be just like the movie The Patriot! Except with time travel. And without Mel Gibson. And maybe not horrible.

UPDATE: Game Informer just revealed their dual covers for their upcoming Assassin's Creed III cover story, which you can see and then begin picking apart for obscure details below.

I'll be honest, the setting doesn't interest me at all but if Ubisoft can refresh things up I'll be interested.

I am a little disappointed that it won't be the French Revolution setting that was rumored. The US cities during the colonial era aren't quite as distinctive. A better time period for a US setting would be during the industrial revolution and after.

This setting does nothing for me. Will wait to see the game in action, but so far this does nothing for me. Maybe they will get into the War of 1812! That would be fun. I just hope this doesn't turn into a Mercia- Fuck-ya story.

Wait.... Native American.... How does that explain he's a descendant of Ezio?

Also.... no tall towers and buildings. I don't know, this is going to either be a really great twist in the gameplay or a total flop for the series I think.

This looks pretty great.

The American Revolution seems like a great setting for a bunch of pseudo-historical intrigue.

Shouldn't the American's be the bad guys in this. George Washington was a Freemason (Templar) and has one of those Apple of Eden globes.

I don't think the Assassin will be ultimatly on either side, but caught somehow in the middle.

@buzz_killington: Any source to this? Not saying it's not wrong, but have you seen the credits for the AC games? They're a mile long! I can't imagine they're is an entire team that wasn't even involved in AC:B. Apparently everyone in montreal works at Ubisoft.

The Game Informer cover reveal. It's on their homepage.

It sure looks more interesting than anything AC has thrown recently, but I will need to see it in motion though. There are too many things in the gameplay I don't know how they will translate to the new setting.

I will also be disappointed if all the templars are on the british side, while the good guys are all american revolutionaries... Seems too politically correct for a game made out of "different people from different cultures".

The way Ubisoft has done things before in the previous games...I can't see it being done this simple.

The way I've seen it, no country is simply one or the other, but rather mixed with Templars and Assassin's. They've both infiltrated positions and ranks in governments, and are just fighting for control. So, American being an Assassin country and England being a Templar country doesn't sound consistent with what they've done.

So, it'll probably being complicated. And not black and white.

The cover art is completely out of sync with the previous games. It's all war war american flag yee haw let's kill redcoats, which doesn't fit the series at all.

Ughh. Of all the rumoured settings this one had the least appeal to me. American Civil War just doesn't interest me. I hope Ubisoft can do something good with it.

I really would've like feudal Japan or even ancient Eygpt...

For everyone talking about history without any real knowledge on the issue, the American Colonies at the time had a (relatively) good relationship with most of the Native American tribes. It really was not until Andrew Jackson that the major problems began to occur on a major scale.

Also, the Native Americans are not a monolithic group. Many different tribes were loyal to different sides in this war.

And Now You Know.

It's good that it's set closer to modern times because they will be able to tie it into the overarching story better. It just begs the question, why does he need to find out MORE about his ancestors after the end of revelations? I have to imagine it will be a little contrived,

If they were gonna set it here, I would much rather have it set in 19th century New York. That way I can have Gangs of New York flashbacks along with a denser, urban look. 18th century America was very rural. "Cities" back then were nothing more than small towns. Just look at Colonial Williamsburg for an example of a big colonial city.

The dude is simply one of Desmond's forefathers. No special tricks required for him to be 100% native american.

No, it has to be one of Desmond's ancestors, unless its not Desmond in the animus.

I really like this setting, especially in a nonshooter, really looking forward to this but I hope they move the overall story along a lot more than even Brotherhood did.

I find it funny how much people hate America, just cause. A Canadian developed game, with a multitude of nationalities developing it, set in a time period most games (Age of Empire III is the only other game I can think of during the American Revolution) shy away from, and yet, everyone is up in arms about it?

@project343: My assumption is the Italian ancestry comes from Desmond's maternal lines. Miles is an English name, and I won't be shocked if we find out that either this character is only half Native American and has the last name Miles, or that he has a daughter who marries a Miles. I mean, I could totally see someone named John Miles or something in the Revolutionary War.

One ancestry is his father's, the other is his mother's. Or the Italian line immigrated over to America at some point and someone married someone with a native bloodline. Or a thousand other permutations of the same basic concept. Family trees are huge, expansive things that can get crazy pretty fast.

@Shun_Akiyama: Warren Vidic, in the first Assassin's Creed, did say that much of what has been told to us throughout history books and "historical records" are lies controlled by Absertgo/ The Templars.

So, they could explain away any changes that way.

Benedict Arnold is a Templar, Paul Rivere is an Assassin, Benjamin Franklin designs your gadgets and the Boston Tea Party was just a distraction for what *really* happened.

Aww, I don't want to assassinate loads of British dudes. At least he's Native American though I suppose. I'm pretty pleased with the announcement; anywhere but Italy at this point.

Revelations was exactly as far as they could possibly push Ezio, I'm looking forward to some new stuff.

Not massively sold on the setting at all.

But the series needs a kick up the arse so hopefully they can evolve the gameplay we come to the series for into something a bit less stale.

You know what would be awesome? The characters of AC carry The Darkness.

Think of the opportunities on both stories.
