Unsurprisingly, George 'GeoHot' Hotz has Some Thoughts About this Whole PSN Hacking Thing

The kid who cracked the PlayStation 3's security is not shocked to learn someone else hacked the PlayStation Network.

As the news blogs and social media feeds continue to swell to the point of bursting with vitriolic, sarcastic, and generally unkind words regarding the compromising of the PlayStation Network and the bona fide communications catastrophe that has since followed, we of The Internet have waited with bated breath for words from George "GeoHot" Hotz, that lovable, firmware-hacking rapscallion whose fairly public and unpleasant legal battle with Sony over said PS3 hackery more or less set off all this nonsense.

 Hackers, meet your bed-headed messiah.
 Hackers, meet your bed-headed messiah.
Now, Hotz's deepest, most personal thoughts have come down from on high (via his blog), and perhaps unsurprisingly, he sees this issue as primarily the fault of Sony executives and their particular brand of hubris in dealing with the hacker community at large.

"The fault lies with the executives," wrote Hotz, "who declared a war on hackers, laughed at the idea of people penetrating the fortress that once was Sony, whined incessantly about piracy, and kept hiring more lawyers when they really needed to hire good security experts. Alienating the hacker community is not a good idea."

On the subject of the current issue and its ramifications for the personal identities of a whole bunch of PlayStation 3 owners, Hotz expressed a sort of defiant sympathy. "Running homebrew and exploring security on your devices is cool, hacking into someone elses server and stealing databases of user info is not cool. You make the hacking community look bad, even if it is aimed at douches like Sony."

== TEASER ==Hotz, who recently settled his civil suit with Sony over his hacked firmware chicanery, also distanced himself directly from the whole episode. "I'm not crazy, and would prefer to not have the FBI knocking on my door," he stated. Anonymous, the Super Mega Awesome Hacking Club who previously responded to Sony's legal chest-beating by threatening to use Sony executives' personal email addresses to sign up for Craigslist erotic service ads, have also claimed to not be directly involved in this personal info thievery.

Hotz closed with a message to the hackers involved in the PSN breach, imploring them not to be "dicks" and referring to Sony as "noobs" without a hint of identifiable irony.

"To the perpetrator, two things. You are clearly talented and will have plenty of money(or a jail sentence and bankruptcy) coming to you in the future. Don't be a dick and sell people's information. And I'd love to see a write up on how it all went down...lord knows we'll never get that from Sony, noobs probably had the password set to '4' or something. I mean, at least it was randomly generated."

@Punk1984: It's a fucking crime for a BANK to not have security.  It's a BANK that's under FEDERAL rules.  It's the same deal with Credit Unions.  You understand that EVERY bank in America is under watch by the Federal Government like an eagle looking at a fish.

It's not a McD, it's a bank that houses corporate funds, civilian mortgages, and the foundation of the US Economy.  If the bank fucked up due to lax security, they are going to criminal court and they will be punished hard.  If robbers steal from a bank because there's no security, the federal courts will be on that bank's ass like a drunk father beats his kid.  No one would let that fly.

Strict Liability is a criminal court order.  If you don't know what that is,  "The liability is said to be strict because defendants will be convicted even though they were genuinely ignorant of one or more factors that made their acts or omissions criminal."

If you fuck up security for very personal, powerful, and important goods...you are going to be hit with Strict Liability.

Yes, you can go to  criminal  court for being liable for something.

@KaosAngel: Oh god you are 12 aren't you?
"Criminal Negligence" is what you are talking about. Don't use Wikipedia in law school. Could you find Sony or the bank criminally negligent if they didn't have security or a vault than yeah probably. If there was a base assumption that the funds/info were secure and protected no probably not. Since i doubt both the bank or Sony put a big fat sign out front asking to be robbed neither would face criminal charges.
Now a civil suit could happen one where you say "The bank's\Sony's security was not up to snuff and they knew it because of that you have incurred damages," that could work. But you are proving that the bank's/Sony's actions damaged you, not that they a guilty of a crime.

In other news can you explain to me the difference between Hanna Montana and Miley Cyrus? You kids always know these things.

@KaosAngel: You kids are so cute when you throw tantrums.
You're problem is you think hackers are cool but that they hurt you and did something "uncool." Holding these two thoughts in your head is uncomfortable so you look for someone to blame because since hackers are cool they could not have done an uncool thing to you. Therefore you find a third party to blame. Granted in this case the third part isn't totally without fault; they are a faceless mega corporation full of suits and greedy executives. Those are things that are 'uncool' so they must have done the 'uncool' act of stealing your personal info. After you play this mental game of hop scotch all is right in your world and you can go back to your juice box.

A lot of the recent comments on PSN news has been painful to read but I have discovered some new users to follow. Got to take the good with the bad on GiantBomb, I wouldn't say that the community is just like any board now. But then I am not a big forum user like you, so our perspectives are different. If your lens into the community is just the comment threads for news items, reviews, and videos. Then yes I will probably agree that its mostly a shitty mess of nonsense.

Obviously thats not being very objective. But I have this feeling that if some sociologist came in here with a systematic method to study comments-- that might be part of the conclusion! Seriously just look at all this spam posted by KaosAngel, hahaha.

I do agree with his statement about Sony needing to hire more tech specialists than lawyers. Of course in reality almost every modern company is guilty of this, but it's still pretty funny.

Yeah, I'm the one being annoying. Not the people in this thread consistently posting 3 word responses after they clearly did not even read what Geohotz said. Or read it and failed to comprehend anything he said.

" The people who hacked PSN will NEVER be caught or given to the public.  The FBI is already on this, and you can sure as fuck bet the FBI will break a deal with the people who did this, assuming they're from the states like it was said in the ParyVan IRC.The worst that's going to happen is that the FBI will tell Sony that they took care of it, and the hacker(s) will be working for the government instead of being sent to jail.  It's how the community works.  If you want proof, go to DEFCON and listen to the speeches from top-ranked hackers.  They'll even admit it, the best way to work for the NSA or FBI is to hack something big, and tell them you'll work for the government to skip punishment.  No one is going to go to jail for this. "
I find this really hard to believe, there are numerous reports online about hackers going to jail.  19yr. old sentenced to 11 years, Albert Gonzales got 20 years, a 21 yr. old here in Michigan got 9 years, not to mention a bunch of smaller sentences like 2 years.  There are plenty of examples of people going to jail for all kinds of hacking.  I would advise anyone not to take your words of advice about what happens to hackers as many do end up in prison.

Why does everyone hate Hotz?  He's just having fun making equipment do more than it's meant to.  I don't see anything wrong with increasing functionality, and he's made it clear he's not there for piracy.  He even called out the guys behind the PSN outage.  I don't see a problem with anything he did, the problem is Sony's and Sony's alone.  If they can't hire a decent security team, they're asking for it.

@pkjr92: People don't like him because of his demeanor and because when something is a closed controlled eco-system like the PS3 was cracking it open can cause problems. Yeah Sony should have more security and people should be upset with them but at the same time part of the PSN's security was the fact that the PS3s were un-crackable. Geohotz cracks it because he wants to prove he can and even though he doesn't do anything bad with that information it does expose the PS3's users to a major headache. I'm not saying GeoHotz knew something like this was going to happen but he is pretty smart guy he should have applied a little forethought before publicizing his crack.

@Punk1984: All consoles are cracked, and PS3 is the only one that was able to be hacked this badly. There is no possible way GeoHotz could have ever known that Sonys security was this terrible. He's called the guys that did this hack dicks, he said that hacking for him isn't about doing shit like breaking into other peoples property. For him it's simply unlocking a product which he owns. Which isn't even illegal, and that the people who did this to PSN are assholes. I fail to see why people in this topic are calling him a dick for saying that.

He kind of talks like a 'douche' so that goes a long way in making people not like him. Also give the guy a bit of credit he had to imagine that there would be some repercussions like this for Sony. Part of the SOny's security was the the PS3 was uncrackable once he did that it opened up a large hole in their security. I imagine he understood this and if he didn't maybe I am giving him too much credit and really is as much of a douche as he makes himself out to be.

Maybe he shouldn't be engaging in illegal activities then...just a thought.  Regardless of his intentions (which I question to begin with anyway).

That said, I do hope every hacker involved in this is found and put away for a good long time.  I have zero sympathy for this kind of criminal.

@Addfwyn: Jailbreaking hardware isn't illegal.

He did with the iPhone, Android, and loads of other devices.  The DMCA said it's not illegal to hardware mod products you legally own.  George more than likely paid for more PS3s than you own, more than likely due to bricking a lot of them because of trial and error.

@Green_Incarnate: Won?  Sony fucking settled that shit before they would lose.  Did you even properly read the settlement or kept up with it?  Apple fucked it up for everyone last year when George got in trouble for the iPhone stuff, guess what the Federal Government said it's perfectly legal.  And George laughed his ass off and went back to doing what he does.

Sony realized this and didn't want to fuck it up for the entire console market.  Sony was going to lose that case hard and console modding was going to be perfectly legal, instead of "grey area".  If you read up on it all the sites even stated this.  Engadget, ArsTechnica, Leo Laport, etc.

It's not illegal to jailbreak shit you own.  The DMCA proved this last year with George's iPhone jailbreaking.

EDIT:  Even Microsoft gave George a fucking Windows Phone 7 in the hopes he jailbreaks it for the consumers.  Microsoft even knew George couldn't lose the Sony case, and sent him that Windows Phone 7 during the Sony stuff.

The problem was A) circumventing copy protection (this is a whole different realm than "modding your hardware") and B) publishing copyrighted code keys on the internet for everyone to see.

@YukoAsho: Or you could follow the law and admit George did nothing illegal.  All this stuff was posted for the iPhone stuff years ago, guess what...Apple didn't cry like a bitch.  It's fucking scary that you would compromise American laws to defend a corporation.  You're allowed to reverse engineer code, it's part of copyrights.  if you can reverse engineer it, it's legal.  These laws are out there to protect consumers.

When Microsoft TELLS George to do the same thing to their products, you have to realize that it's not illegal.

Apple, Google, and Microsoft have all stood up to George and admitted what he does isn't illegal.  They didn't cry like pussies when George had his fun, because they knew they had no case.  When those big three can't touch George, what makes you think think Sony has a chance?

Sony lost a case like this in Australia to a dude who mod-chipped ps1 so they could play region free games. Sony lost so now it is legal in Australia to mod-chip your consoles. :D
