Welcome to Shocktober 2013

There are 31 days in October, and you might as well fill 'em with blood, gore, and monsters. Warning: lots of YouTube videos within!

It's that time again. October has arrived, and Shocktober has begun.

It blows my mind how many people haven't seen Trick 'r Treat. Please fix that! The best horror anthology since...Creepshow?
It blows my mind how many people haven't seen Trick 'r Treat. Please fix that! The best horror anthology since...Creepshow?

Shocktober isn't new in the Klepek family. My wife and I have been compiling lists of horror for the season of the witch for years, even holding off on watching some in hopes of making October's treats that much sweeter. We try to run the gamut--old, new, funny, scary.

The goal is to have a list of 31 horror movies but not feel constrained by the list. We have never actually watched 31 movies, and I don't expect that will change this year, either. Plus, horror is about mood. Some nights, you want ghosts. Other nights, you want unbridled revenge. Follow your cinematic bloodlust, friend, and it will keep you up at night.

Some things to remember about this list. This is my list, which means it's not a "best horror movies of all-time" list, and with the rare exception of Hellraiser and Trick 'r Treat, these are all movies I haven't seen yet. Most of these can be easily obtained by loading up Amazon, iTunes, or Netflix, and I'd recommend services like CanIStreamIt? to determine what's the best way to track them down on the devices you own. A few of the movies are theater-bound, and have been appropriately noted and listed on or after their theatrical date.

But this isn't a movie site, and there's plenty more planned for this month. Interviews, features, livestreams, and whatever madness pops into my head. I've wanted a reason to play Condemned: Criminal Origins again.

Please share your experiences in the comments! I'll probably file a few stories throughout the month, making notes and reacting to some of the movies. My wife will be gone for a good portion of the month, so I'm not sure how many we'll be getting in, but lord knows we'll try. And if you have any other suggestions? Have at me.

There's always next year.

Oh wow, Ghost Watch? I was about 12 when that was on TV and it scared the crap out of me. The mokumentary style was still rather untapped at the time and the use of TV hosts in the show gave it a lot of believability.

Cool. After having heard Patrick talk about this (I think it was on the podcast) I've decided to try it myself this year, and write a little something about every movie on my blog. The only common item on my list and this one is Hellraiser. But I'll be saving some of these for next year...

@patrickklepek

good thing Audition wasn't on there that movie is fucking gross. glad you put Shrooms on there saw that on netflix. most of the After Dark Horrorfest films were complete shit, but i found Unrest to be pretty decent.

also a director to watch for is Christopher Smith, released a bunch of really crazy horror movies you should see:

Creep (2004) excellent thriller

Severence (2006) Black Comedy Horror

Triangle (2009) just plain Awesome

Black Death medieval supernatural Horror movie

oh and hey, klepek, is that a slavic name?

Patrick, I am kind of surprised that you would suggest watching anything associated with I Spit On Your Grave.

I'll need to check out that Ghostwatch documentary. The trailer you linked is for that opposed to the original BBC showing of Ghostwatch, which for the time was pretty great.

Wow, never seen Carrie, Videodrome or Rosemary's Baby? They're way too good next to the other movies in here.

Oh, maybe that's a new Carrie movie? Anyway, Videodrome and especially Rosemary's Baby are incredible, horror or not.

Yay, I'm really impressed with your selection, Patrick! Some highly interesting films on here, lot's of current ones too. Not too surprising I guess since horror is "in" right now. But after watching the trailers I thought a lot of them really managed to set themselves apart from the steady regurgitation that is modern horror. Gonna try and see a whole bunch of these during Shocktober. Saw Hellraiser for the first time a few days ago and I've got the sequels lined up as well. Happy to see a few of my suggestions make it to the list!

Terrible film, though I can't tell if that's an ironic inclusion or not.

Rosemary's Baby is great!

Haven't seen the remake of I Spit on Your Grave, or the original for that matter, but a funny story is that my parents watched the original on their first date based on the recommendation of my grandma who was a hardcore feminist at the time! Not really the best movie to watch with anyone!

...

Also, Hellraiser is total garbage

If only these were numbered I would find a way to watch them but bullets makes it much more laissez faire. Also I just watched the original Carrie like a week ago for the first time, I can't imagine that film being interesting in a remake even if I like Chloe Moretz.

I Spit on Your Grave 2 is awful, hateful garbage. It has literally no redeeming features.

Also I loved Event Horizon when it came out but going back to it, it's kind of...JUMP SCARES OUTTA NOWHERE just doesn't really do it for me anymore I guess?

This is not content, this is spam. I was once advised it was against the tos to start a forum thread with "Youtube spamming" and now I see this half arsed excuse for an article. I wish somebody would put a leash on Patrick because he's treating this fine website like a dumping ground for whatever nonsense comes into his head.

This is a list of movies he is going to be watching. Would it be more interesting if he just listed 31 movies? I think he is putting the trailers on here so we can see what each movie is about and decide if we want to watch with him. Now if you hate Patrick and do not like what he is about that's a different story. Just don't pretend to be all high and mighty about it.

Why is sematary spelled that way? Just looked up the movie title and its spelled that way for reals. I can't imagine a spelling error making it that far for no reason.

This month, I'm gonna definitely play dead space 1 again, probably dead space 2, and finally get through amnesia: the dark descent, bought it like a year ago and still haven't booted it up. Can't think of any other games I really wanna play again, maybe alan wake and possibly shadows of the damned, its not scary but it seems like the right time of the year to replay that game.

Escape from Tomorrow looks incredibly intriguing, sad that I missed it at the film festival in Champaign, IL as it's only about a 40 minute drive from here and I know plenty of people currently going to college there that would have gone with me.

Why couldn't you have let me know about that movie's existence earlier, Scoops?!?

Event Horizon is an excellent horror movie, one of the few that has ever elicited any real fear out of me. Rosemary's Baby is just terrible though, thoroughly boring and not frightening in any way.

I think the big takeaways for me are going to be Event Horizon (Love Sci-fi horror) and a lot of people seem to be championing Noroi. I'm not a fan of horror, but after seeing Cabin in the Woods, it's made me want to check out that genre.

This article (?) is kinda messed up. This is a video game site, yes? Please don't toss in the mention of Condemned to try and excuse it for being on the front page. Hey, it's cool you and your wife do a whole October scary movie thing. Might I suggest http://www.giantbomb.com/community/ to write about it? Maybe a Tumblr? Or a Blogger? Live Journal? Somewhere where you can post about your exciting home life activities.

Come on.

I'm probably going to mine the comments on this for days looking for new horror suggestions.

So here's a few of my own favorites:

Dark Water (2002) - this is my favorite Asian horror film; it's classier than most. Thailand's Shutter (2004) is also pretty good if you just don't want to sleep for a few days. Both their US remakes are awful.

others...

Session 9 (2001)

The Innocents (1961)

Let the Right One In (2008)

Ils (2006)

Haute Tension (2003)

Frozen (2010)

@patrickklepek: Awesome list, Patrick! I wish I had the time this month to follow it. I think I need to pick a few nights this month just for some movies from this list. I'm surprised that you haven't seen Event Horizon, Rosemary's Baby, or Pet Sematary, though. But, then again I've never seen Hellraiser or Videodrome so, I'm not one to speak for missing classics. I think your enthusiasm for Hellraiser might make me see it this month.

I'm glad you're seeing Shrooms. I thought it was a really good mix of b-movie horror and comedy when it came out. It's been awhile since I've seen Rosemary's Baby but, I think that movie will be very different from the rest of the movies on this list. I remember it being more akin to early 60's horror, that focuses on slow development and subtle tension, than my expectation of it being something similar to 70's horror. I don't know why I had those expectations. Maybe I was expecting the presentation to be like The Exorcist since they're about five years apart but, I don't know. Still, a good movie. Just different.

@jachin: i know right? really good list anyway though, event horizon is one of my favs, and escape from tomorrow looks righteous. shrooms, rosemarys baby and insidious chapter 2 i have seen, and are the only ones on this list i would call disappointing. the others i have seen like: trick r treat, hellraiser, videodrome, and john dies at the end are all very good. John dies at the end isnt so much a horror movie as it is sci-fi, but like videodrome its so gory that its hard not to call it a horror film.

Movies that should be on this list in place of a few listed IMO: jacobs ladder(personal fav), the shining, and especially V/H/S 2, which came out just this year. Happy halloween duders

You have the perfect opportunity to talk about 31 games that are unnerving or scary. Yet you didn't. You took the opportunity to talk about yourself. WTF dude?

Patrick: HMMMM.... I write for a very popular video game site. What should I write about?"

Dumb Brain: "Movies Obvs."

Patrick: Of Course!
