Wii U Getting a Price Drop, Also There Is a Nintendo 2DS Now [UPDATE]

Nintendo's making moves. I'll leave it to you to decide the level of merit to afford those moves.

This exists. HANDLE THAT.
This exists. HANDLE THAT.

Nintendo appears to be in problem solving mode today, including solving some problems we didn't even know existed. Aiming to simultaneously bolster sales of its flagging Wii U console and get more people to buy 3DS systems even though a lot of people have already bought 3DS systems, the company announced a pair of moves sure to get people talking, and maybe even buying more systems. Maybe.

First up, the Wii U, which will see its deluxe model drop to a price point of $299.99, $50 less than its debut cost. Nothing too fancy about that news, though given the lack of consumer interest the Wii U has engendered thus far, it makes perfect sense, especially given the timing of the move. The price drop will officially take hold as of September 20, two months before Sony and Microsoft launch their new console platforms.

On the 3DS side, Nintendo's latest announcement should be of great benefit to you if you haven't ever owned a 3DS and your barrier to entry for the system was $40 and one too many dimensions. Today, Nintendo announced a 2DS. Yes, it's just like the 3DS, but without the 3D functionality. It also retails for $129.99 ($40 cheaper than the standard 3DS model) and ditches the system's clamshell-style lid. It will support all 3DS titles and include backward compatibility for classic DS games.

Again, the Wii U news is kind of a no-brainer, though the timing (and bizarre design) of the 2DS is a real head-scratcher. Like, sure, it's absolutely an entry-level device not aimed at the sort of people who would already own a 3DS, and the usefulness of the system's 3D capabilities has been debated pretty much since the system debuted, anyway. But when you consider that the 3DS is already the best-selling platform on the market as of right now, it seems maybe a bit...superfluous? I don't know. Maybe I'm wildly underestimating how cheap this thing is to produce, and the number of parents of Pokemon fans who will run out and grab this thing for the kids come this holiday season.

You tell me. Is this a thing you, or someone you know would want? And while we're at it, is $50 off enough to get you on board with the Wii U?

UPDATE: Amid the torrent of Nintendo news, I neglected to mention the also just announced Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle. The bundle, which will also launch on September 20, includes a special black Wii U console (with custom gold lettering and symbols on the GamePad), a free download code for the Hyrule Hystoria book, and a download code for the Wind Waker HD game from the Nintendo eShop. Interestingly, this bundle goes for the same $299.99 price point as the regular deluxe model, and comes ahead of Wind Waker HD's October 4 retail release.

For young children or not, that thing is still ugly as sin, and the button placement looks super awkward.

Yeah, I like the idea of the 2DS, it's unusual, but $130 is a hot price for families and kids. That thing is going to fly off shelves once pokemon hits. The WiiU price drop is a good move but i would have preferred a $250 console be offered with no game. They do have a lot of great software coming out at the end of this year and early next year.

Weirdly, I never knew I wanted the clamshell design so badly until they took it away. So it's basically not portable cause you can't throw it into a bag or your pants pocket.

For what it's worth, I'm taking a guess that it's a pretty thin device, like a tablet. It still looks incredibly poorly designed though, on first impression.

Never bought a 3DS because I'm unable to see 3D effects (almost no depth perception). Was sort of thinking of getting one now for Animal Crossing, so in principle I'd be on board for a 2DS... but dagnabbit! That design is...special.

Even if it were only $50, it'd be $50 too much if I wasn't going to use it. The Wii U needs games, and for someone like me that grew out of their properties in my mid-teens, Mario titles won't do it.

i think if ninty started releasing hardcore action titles/gritty shooters/m-rated etc. it would look even worse and more self-mocking than the stuff they already release for their regular properties. it's like the middle-aged dad trying to be hip and with it with his kids, it just reeks of try-hardness. not sure what you want from them exactly (if anything); personally i'd just like to see a re-evaluation of their existing franchises, maybe more development time and thought put into new entries, and a smattering of new IPs and excursions outside their comfort zone.

The 2DS is silly as kids will get it brought for them just so their folks can save $40 and have to deal with shame in the school yard about how they have the cheaper version... I know how kids are. Way to go once again Nintendo!

That 2DS looks like it will be very weird to hold. Maybe its just the picture but it looks like you would press the d-pad by accident when you move the controlstick and that because your hands are more above the lower screen you would be switching between looking at the two screens more than with the clamshell design. Also the price difference is too little to warrant the loss of quality and portability.

The WiiU needs to drop another $100 before I think about buying.

The 2DS is appropriately in the shape of a tombstone, since its spells the death of the Nintendo.

It's almost like they made something with me in mind: can't see 3D & meaning to pick up a 3DS. Been at least 5 years since I could say that about a Nintendo product.

Then I looked at it.

I woke up, read the news and saw the 50 dollar price drop, then I saw the 299 price tag, and immediately thought, wait is that a typo? I thought it was already 299. Then I remembered that the Wii U is actually 350 dollars, and with less than two and a half months left until the Xbox One and the PS4 come out, it sort of gives me a bit of perspective. That being that Nintendo, as a company releasing a console going into 2013, vastly overestimated both their place in the market and their ability to properly market a product to their casual audience from the looks of things.

Of course this happens right after I finally get a Wii U. Oh well, hopefully this will encourage a few more people to finally take the leap.

I think the 2DS looks cool, I just hope they put 2DS/3DS branding on 3DS games for the parents.

If they can get that 2DS down to $100, they'll fly off of shelves.

I wonder what's in store for Black Friday.

If the 2DS had the traditional clamshell design, this would make all the sense in the world. Without it, it doesn't even look portable.

And hey, Wii U price drop. Games will be coming out for it soon so yeah, you want one, I say buy one.

When I was a kid, coherent enough to play video games, I knew about all the consoles in stores from cousins or friends in school. The 2ds seems like a real downgrade since kids probably would know that the 3ds exists.

I think that this is a great idea for Nintendo. While being a cheaper alternative, it will allow those of us who can't see 3D to still play 3DS games.

I see the 2DS failing to make a splash. A 2D handheld is not want kids want. They want a tablet or iPod Touch. Either can do way more than a Nintendo handheld ever will.

@ghostvenox: Instead of just, I don't know, just turning off the 3d on the 3ds? One of the main things I like about my 3ds is how compact it is, I can just throw it in a pocket and leave the house, this thing does not look like it'll be very pocket friendly. Also, no circlepad pro (for now at least)

The 2DS is a weird idea, but a little better than I think most people think it is. Honestly, the 2DS just jumped on my list of considered purchases, which granted is a mile fucking long. $129.99 to have access to the entire 3DS and DS libraries is pretty good.

I can sorta understand having a 2d version of the 3ds (minus the fact that some games require the 3d right?) but why is the design so bad? That looks like two Snes cartridges glued together

Why issue a price drop and wait a month before it occurs? Who is going to buy the Wii and $350 when it's going down in price? Why can't more people be like Apple and announce a thing, then sell the thing soon (if not immediately) afterwards?

I don't get why Nintendo is putting so much effort into promoting Wind Waker HD. It's a HD remake of a game that came out 2 generations ago! Don't get me wrong, the original was a fantastic games, and WW is one of my favourite games. I'll be picking it up on the WiiU for sure, but I can't be the only one who thinks that this move makes Nintendo look desperate and weak. If it were a new Zelda games then it would be a fantastic move, but a re-make? Come on Nintendo!

Saying that makes it feel just like some kind of elementary school prank. Some kid in my 3rd grade clic whose all like, "Dude! My uncle works for Nintendo and he told me that they're coming out with a 2DS!", and then me being all like, "*PFFT*-whatever", and then coming home to find out that it's true and my grandma had already bought me one for my birthday...

Urban Legends now exist!

Actually seeing it in action makes it look less patently stupid. Clearly not for me (I have a 3DS XL) but it's actually pretty alright looking with the cool colors.
