Wii U’s Controller May Have Seen Some Changes

No more Circle Pad-style analog sticks, and some swapped button placement.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo’s said very little about Wii U since its public debut at last year’s E3, but that should change at this year’s E3, in which the company is expected to answer most of our lingering questions. (Price will not be one of them, though).

Whether or not Nintendo has modified the Wii U hardware has been a topic of intense speculation. While the Wii U’s internal specs will remain a mystery for a little while longer, it appears the controller has undergone changes.

Games Radar picked up on a (now deleted) tweet from a Traveller’s Tales employee, which included a shot of the Wii U controller. Compared to our last look at the tablet-like controller, there’s one major change: proper analog sticks. There were 3DS-like Circle Pad sticks on the last iteration. The start and select buttons have been moved to the right-hand corner, and there’s a mysterious square on the left--it wouldn't surprise me if that was for syncing.

No Caption Provided

The Traveller's Tales connection should not be surprising. The Grand Theft Auto-style LEGO City Stories is a Wii U and 3DS exclusive, and it's likely Wii U will be added to the lineup of platforms for future LEGO games.

Nintendo declined to comment on the changes.

“We do not comment on rumors or speculation,” said the company in a statement.

I don't know if this thing is going to be good at all. I think a lot of people got burned by the Wii, and Nintendo really needs something groundbreaking to win people over.

I still don't care about the goofy controller. Way I see it Nintendo is an entire generation behind both Sony and Microsoft when it comes to actual hardware in their system, and that's what matters. Unfortunately that really isn't what matters to them. They seem hell bent on introducing gimmicks instead of reliable horsepower and both the games on their system and their system itself suffer because of it. They always like throwing around the cop-out answer of, "We worry about the experience and not the hardware," when it is the hardware itself that allows developers to do more with their fucking games.

Ergonomically speaking this thing is probably a nightmare over long play sessions. Durability wise it'll be virtually unbreakable because most Nintendo shit is. But the real meat, the actual hardware, I expect to be lacking in a massive way because it's Nintendo.

Shame really. It'll get left behind again and I still won't give a fuck.

the idea is great, but it doesnt look very comfortable to use at all. they should put little hand wing grip things on it for the analog sticks nad buttons. sure it'd look even dumber, but functionality is more important.

Nintendo I've been with you since the NES, through thick and thin, defending you and your silly decisions right up 'til now.

I'm putting it out there, fuck the Wii U.

Really? It looks like every single thing that Apple has ever put out. So you think their products are shit too right?

It definitely doesn't have the elegance of the more recent Apple products, and although I haven't felt the controller the way the light is bouncing off the plastic does make it look cheap...but what do we know? Technically we shouldn't have seen this and it's just something slapped together for devs. We also haven't held this model so it could just as easily be a combination of bad lighting and a low resolution shot that's making the controller look unappealing.

Either way I'm looking forward to the Wii U and the surprises that are going to come our of E3.

It doesn't really look cheap, unless you think all electronics look cheap. I'm guessing you have never seen those old Tiger Electronics handhelds, because if you put one of those next to it, you can definitely see the difference in what cheap electronics look like. And those things didn't really look cheap either.  Even an old console controller next to one of these looks cheap, because back then, they were - you're holding a huge plastic casing with a centimeter thick PCB in it, whereas now with iPads and things like this, you're holding most of the device in your hands.

My problem with it is Nintendo's seeming insistence on symmetry with their controller. Great, you've upgraded your analog sticks but why would you put the second analog stick above the face buttons, since the use of the right analog stick is primarily camera controls, which you will be needing to fuck with often, and it is way easier to move your thumb down the controller rather than up along it, which would mean you have to move your whole hand.

It would be neat if, and this will probably not happen, they had an optional control for the camera that relied on the motion sensors. Hold down a button on this and tilt it and the camera would move accordingly. I know that would be up to the developer and not Nintendo though.

If they have a proper launch Super Mario game, then you know Nintendo is serious about this shit. If they just do another Wii sports compilation, well I guess you can't fault em but Nintendo just ain't for me anymore.

atleast they put analog sticks on it.

The hardware doesn't really matter to me, I think its all about the software. Nintendo has to get online right, and they have to be able to market wii U as a entertainment box and not just a gaming console. The Nintendo games will be solid, but with a lack of hardware power I don't know how they will be able to sustain third party games (specially if the online is not upto par)I think having some sort of tablet functionality is really cool and can be a great gateway for casual gamers to get into some more serious gaming (plus its an easy way to navigate menus etc). However I am very, very skeptical of the Wii U controller. Its not a multitouch screen and its not as high res as the tablets on the market right now and seems kind of too bulky and not really elegant like current tablets. It seems very logical to me that both Sony and specially Msoft with Windows 8 will have extensive integration of tablets and phones with their next console in a way that makes Wii U's controller kind of obsolete.

Lets see what happens at E3 though.

The name matters? If it's good they can call it "Nintendo Incest: Fuck Your Family" and I'll play it. If it sucks they can name it after me and I'll still pass.

No, actually the software is what matters most. The Wii may be behind the others technologically but there are still great experiences to be had on it. The bigger problem s Nintendo allowing any old shit piece of software to be put on it and not doing a good job helping other developers get a handle on the motion controls.

I'm also curious where you saw Nintendo give that comment you mentioned. The closest thing I've ever seen is Reggie saying they care about the experiences they can deliver, and not what the competitors are doing.

If it's 1080p with proper online I will purchase. If not, then no.

It does look uncomfortable to hold especially where they placed the sticks but the iPad is a TERRIBLE design and people seem to have no problem with it. So I will wait and see.

Software is dependent on hardware. Assassin's Creed could not work on 2002 hardware, you'd fit about 12 people on screen before it went to single digit frames. You couldn't do the facial animation and lip syncing of a Mass Effect in 2002. The parts that make Skyrim awesome are not possible 10 years ago.

So yes, hardware is important.

YEA everyones right. I never understood any of Nintendos systems, and they have all been my favorites. Nintendo games have taught me more than any other teacher ever has. I'm unsure about the Wii U FUCK NINTENDO. This is surely the instance in time that they pull a 180 and completely change all their values and results. Fuck the Wii U because I'm a retard.

What people may not know is that nintendo also added aggressively contoured grips to the underside like a normal gamepad, and it actually looks very comfortable to hold.

To all those talking bout being uncomfortable:

remember all processing is done by the console, the controller itself is therefore very light. Its also shaped exactly like a normal contoller apart from it being wider, meaning it should be even more comfortable for those with bigger hands, and just as comfortable for those used to ps360 controllers.

Definition: Ergonomics is the science of work.

Ergonomics derives from two Greek words: ergon, meaning work, and nomoi, meaning natural laws. Combined they create a word that means the science of work and a person’s relationship to that work.

In application ergonomics is a discipline focused on making products and tasks comfortable and efficient for the user.

Can someone please let Nintendo know this is a thing? Just like every other Nintendo controller, it doesn't look at all comfortable or usable.

It's funny you say that, because Nintendo controllers have historically been very comfortable to hold, at least in my case. The only exception I'd make to this is the original rectangular NES controller.

Except nearly every hands-on preview has been positive about how that thing feels in peoples' hands, while also opening wtih "it was a lot more comfortable than I thought it would be".

And I can see a core game controlling very easily with that controller. It has two, clickable sticks. Four face buttons and a D-pad. Two triggers on both the left and right side. Looks like a pretty fucking standard controller aside from that added screen in the center.

@fishless: Exactly, It may be Nintendo's best controller for FPS but their track record is so poor that this is still a bungle and not a serious effort at winning back favour with core gamers. I take what Randy said to be more of a backhanded compliment, for example: "the previous post was the most excellent display of reading comprehension I've seen from fishless in this thread!" I don't see why you couldn't understand my meaning...

Never really paid attention to the WiiU controller, but it's a good thing they moved the Start(+) and Select(-) buttons closer to were your hands are going to be.

As for everyone that has been saying that it going to be uncomfortable, I said the same thing about the N64 controller as a kid. (3 handles?, the fuck?) but turned out to be very comfy. Probably should wait 'till they do their pre-release hype tours before passing judgement.
