Worth Reading: 11/02/12

It's been a busy couple of days, so a slightly-less-hefty collection of stuff for you to click on this weekend. Click away!

Once again, kudos to Giant Bomb user Fobwashed for this excellent piece of work. ARGH.
Once again, kudos to Giant Bomb user Fobwashed for this excellent piece of work. ARGH.

I’m putting together this edition of Worth Reading really late on Friday afternoon, moments after having my soul crushed by the never-dying, machete-wielding Jason Vorhees. You’ll have to forgive me for not having paragraphs of reflection on the past few days, and instead quickly point you to what I’ve gathered this week.

Apologies for not having a game to point you to, though. Rather than suggest a game I didn’t have enough time to vet, I’d rather just cut that section and focus on the material that I can stand behind.

God damn you, Jason. God damn you.

(I will have my revenge on a later episode of Spookin’ With Scoops.)

Hey, You Should Read These

No Caption Provided

Hopefully you had a chance to listen to the podcast this week, in which we spent more than an hour talking about the various issues raised regarding ethics in games journalist in the past few weeks. It’s probably not the last time we’ll have something to say on the subject (and if you have questions, ask!), but rather than delving deeper down that rabbit hole on Worth Reading, I wanted to highlight a few excellent pieces of games journalism filed recently. These are pieces that deserve your clicks, as the only way more of it will be produced is if websites know they can have reporters spending weeks researching material that will only end up in one, big piece. There’s not much of a financial incentive to do that, and we have to support the websites that do engage in that. Bravo to Polygon and Kotaku.

If You Click It, It Will Play

I Don’t Know About This Kickstarter Thing, But These Projects Seem Pretty Cool

  • Whatever you think of Gerztron, I wish more Kickstarter games attached prototypes.
  • There aren't many god games these days, and Maia proposes being the god of a space colony.
  • Sir, You Are Being Hunted should get backed for its name alone. Luckily, it also looks great.

Valve Just Launched Greenlight, So Here’s Some Games That Don’t Look Terrible

  • Broforce. Broforce? Broforce! Wait, Broforce. Right. Broforce.
  • Heard nothing but great things about Walking Mars for iOS. Maybe I'll just wait and play it here.
  • Dino Run is not really a new thing, but if you're into dinosaurs, it's some good, mindless fun.

It's sad to hear about what happened with Matt Hughes. I think the guy just wanted to be hired full-time and it never came about for him. Really tragic.

I guarantee you it was not that simple. I've suffered from depression for most of my life and been suicidal a few times, and while something like that might have contributed to his depression, it's never just one thing. It always runs deeper than that.

I didn't mean to imply that was the only reason. Just looking back on something like this, we try to find something that could have been different -- that might have led to a better outcome. Helplessness is a terrible feeling.

I really like these articles. They often turn me on to stuff I would otherwise never see. Thanks Patrick. Broforce looks amazing. I wonder when Kotaku is coming back up in full force.

I feel bad for not feeling bad about the whole Eternal Darkness thing. It was their own fault in the end. Nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks for the Homefront linkage.

These games like Hotline Miami are getting kind of old. It has come to the point that retro/indie games are so popular that they have become pretty things to talk about. I was reading a review on an unnamed site for Doom 3 BFG and they directly said they cut down the score for that because it was reviewed on merits of gaming for today's games. A week later they give Hotline Miami a perfect score. So, the question is, why does a new game that looks like a 1992 game get a pass while a game advertised as an HD update is flamed?

The infamous, "Let's all be unique and like everything at the same time" kind of belongs in the conversation. Same goes for the weird folks who play Halo to be different from those who play FPS military online games. Except, Halo is an FPS military online game. You are a robot that is seven feet tall, can jump twenty feet in the air, and totally bones a hologram who appears to get her logic from cleavage.

Rant/10.

The story about the Ethiopian kids is super interesting! Actually, the article linked from the dvice article gives context for what they mean by "they hacked Android."

Trick-Y! Trick-Y! Trick-Y!

A fascinating piece on the so-called "randomness" of XCOM.

This article, and especially the game that inspired it, do great things to squash the Dogma of "the unfairness of randomness". In celebration, I'd like to trot out my two favorite bits against "unfair randomness":

"They say they hate RNG, but everyone stacks Crit, Dodge, and Parry."

Or the Chariot System from Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together which XCOM mimiced, decisions can be rewound, but the RNG stays the same unless overwritten by actions even earlier in the timeline and the sheer scope of battles in the title.

Out of the Moore interview:

"...because I’d rather say “give me all you can eat for 15 bucks a month and I’ll play the game if you give me everything,”

This is why the "box and sub" model for DikuMUD MMOs is in a death spiral, right here in plain english.

Those two dev stories were spectacular reads — I'm in website design and development and see a lot of parallels. But hey Patrick? I'm SUPER DEPRESSED after reading them. Can we find some cheerful, uplifting dev stories next week?

Gary Whitta Presents Modern Warfare 4.

That Peter Moore interview is mind-blowing. It would be nice if Peter Moore became CEO of EA and actually had the kind of control you'd assume that a CEO should have. Because his ideas of the "EA Vault" or just turning their products into a Netflix service are super interesting. That's what we all want from our old games, and Pete Moore himself adds 'what if it applied to your new games as well'? Fuck, I love that idea.

Indeed. But, while I'm sure more-steady employment would've helped his situation, I suspect it would've only delayed the inevitable, if that. Human beings are too complex, and depression is too much of a bitch, for things to be that simple, usually. Regardless of the how or why, though, it's awful whenever someone despairs enough to end themselves. It should never come to that.

Jeez that Homefront story is depressing. Practically confirms many of our suspicions about the big budget industry; a lot of managers chasing CoD money without the means to actually do so.

I'd love to get into videogame creation, but it just seems like a slave-driving industry.

I entertained the idea of going into the games business for a couple years, but ultimately reports of conditions in the industry drove me away as well. Working my ass off to get a job for the privilege of continuing to work my ass off for a salary I won't have time to spend. Sounds lovely.

When I was around the age of 13 I remember toying with the idea of going into games design. I was seriously considering it for a while too. I even looked into finding the best University for my chosen field, which at 13 was admittedly jumping the gun somewhat, but I loved video games and the idea of making them made me salivate. I ultimately decided against going down that road once I realised how inflexible and narrow my career path would be, that plus some unsubtle persuasion from teachers and my family. And after reading the Homefront article and my bi-weekly dose of 'The Trenches' reassures me that I made the right choice. The games industry seems so immature, and I don't just mean as a medium. In the case of Homefront the management seemed to be out of control and sometimes had no direct experience with what was happening and ultimately ended up ruining it.

Unfortunately, the situation with SK and Dennis Dyack is years old. I remember him talking major trash during the Too Human development starting with Mark "Gaming Jesus" MacDonald's scathing preview of the Too Human E3 build. That started a several year long tour of whining with Dyack and his tirades against things like hating previews, hating game reviewers, hating NeoGaf, hating the internet, possibly hating Epic Games, and generally looking like a Grade A doucher.
