Xbox One Launch Pushed Back in Several Countries

Belgium, Denmark, and others won’t see the machine until sometime next year.

Nothing will stop me from continuing to use this image.
Nothing will stop me from continuing to use this image.

If you’re a Giant Bomb fan from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden or Switzerland, Xbox One is no longer launching in 2013. Sorry!

Microsoft has narrowed the number of countries Xbox One will launch in come November, and those markets have been pushed into “as soon as possible in 2014.”

“While we wish we could launch Xbox One simultaneously in these markets, there are many factors that determine the timing of specific market launches,” said the company in a blog post today. “This includes work to localize the Xbox One dash, incorporate additional voice and languages, and build partnerships to bring apps and meaningful local content to each country.”

It’d be one thing if retailers hadn’t already started taking pre-order, but that’s not the case. As an apology, Microsoft is offering a free game to consumers who already committed to buying a machine. Details on how the promotion will work won’t be available until closer to launch, though. Free games from a launch lineup!!!!!

Which day Xbox One will launch in November remains a mystery, though Gamescom is soon.

What does this have to do with the story?

Xbox is an american product made by and for americans, and they don't mind shafting half of europe and treating them like second class customers, as long as Joe Hick and Frat Boy get their console in time for NFL. Netflix is still not on the XBLG service but gamers in europe still pay $72 yearly for Gold. They're taking europe for chumps and I hope it is going to blow up in their face.

And that justifies a stupid joke that paints all Americans as xenophobes why?

I guess the mighty Microsoft is launching this fall whether its 100% ready or not. It must be all eggshell floors at he corporate headquarters as departments wait on que to inform the execs of their next predicament.

Thats what happens when you decide to reverse every policy mere months from launch, and therefore certainly affect software capabilities.

Im sure they are having trouble rejiggering all the XBones to actually reflect what they have said about DRM and the Kinect, etc.

Microsoft has looked quite amateurish and surprisingly leaderless during this PR period before launch. All thats left to cherry top their debacle is the presumable "red ring of death" version 2.0.

Can you really change how the console software handles used games, DRM, and the Kinect without rewriting large swaths of code?

The Microsoft flailing circus is far from over.....

This was a real bummer until I realized that Amazon.co.uk is still taking pre-orders and they will ship to Finland at least. Bought mine a minute ago.

From what I understood, the xbone is region-locked based on IP address when you connect to update (and back when you were going to connect every 24 hours. You could potentially have a friend in the UK update it there for you, or set up a VPN to the UK, but you'd also have to convert your Finnish Xbox Live account to a UK based one, which I've read some nightmare stories about, and also continue to import all future games from there outside of region-free stuff you can get from play-asia.

I dunno, doesn't seem worth it to me.

You can use the Xbox One with a local account (Finnish, Russian, Swedish etc.) and buy digital games with that account. They just won't be selling the physical boxes here until 2014 and you obviously can't use it in your local language until then.

I'm going for the 4th competitor in the console race, the machine with the superior specs, customization options and longer feature list, and the one that is already available in all countries.

The machine with the most games, the most platform exclusive games and backwards compatibility,

And the machine with the best controller.

So either tv subscribers in many countries don't want to play ball, or the rumors of productions woes have some truth to them.

The ability for Microsoft to make headway in Europe has taken a turn for the worse.

Yeah, wtf is up with Belgium getting the shoutout and not The Netherlands, lol.

Anyway, looks like microsoft just made the decision for any early adopters in those countries who are still on the fence. Me, I was thinking about for the first time plunging into a new gen on day one, but if that's going to happen it'll be a PS4 anyway.

Instead of improving their argument this only shows I made the right choice.

Just when MS reversed most of their dumb decisions, people were starting to reconsider the Xbone, especially with the lack of a mandatory Kinect connection, they were hoping for Kinect-less version for the same price as a PS4. And now they just made the decision easy again.

Localization is an excuse of course. The rumours that are going on about the problems with the Xbone hardware production are a more likely reason. And if they are having problems making properly working consoles, I'm going to assume the ones that they DO sell, are only barely working. This is after all the company that knowingly sold its customers a console that had a very high risk of failure...

Has Sony even given the launch markets for the PS4 yet? Both XONE and PS4 both won't be region locked so everyone saying I guess I'll just have to get a PS4 make no sense. Yeah it sucks that it won't launch there but there are other ways to get the system if you want it.

From their product information:

Initial set-up and updates require broadband internet and an account on Xbox Live in an Xbox One-supported Xbox Live country (not all Xbox Live countries); ISP fees apply.

If the Xbox One hasn't launched in the country your importing to, it doesn't sound like a guarantee that you'll be able to get through the initial set up process.

When will these big companies learn that most of those countries don't care about localization, I'm so tried of games (and now consoles) being delayed where I live (Denmark) because Germany and France need to have their stuff localized.

Notice all those countries' citizens (except Russia) all know English as well as most English speakers and wouldn't give a flying fuck about what language and apps are pre-installed on this console. Not to mention first or second round buyers of this thing are here solely for the games anyway, and I'm pretty damn sure those games will be in English as well as the consoles.

Oh well, I guess the 26 people living in these countries will just have to cancel and go to the competition or sit back and continue brandishing their PS4 pre-order. Now if Sony pulls out too I'll just keep calm and use the PC while silently hating everyone, Scandinavian style.

Well, was more interested in a PS4 anyway, and maybe an Xbox One later. At the press conference from Microsoft it was clear they were aiming more at the US market with their fancy and fantasy sports and tv stuff we don't have in the Netherlands.

So Microsoft is giving up on Europe again? You know, the territory they needed to win over still?

Cant say that i care too much even though im living in one of the mentioned countries. I want a PS4 anyway, and then maybe an xbox one 3 or 4 years down the line.

But it is weird, maybe they are rushing to market a bit more then they are letting on and dont have the capacity to pull it of? or maybe they are focusing on the US market a bit more now because they realized that they might actually have to fight for this one? Or maybe im reading too much into this. Who knows? :-)

Wait you got part of Europe wrong, we only think of one place as pussies and the rest we don't give a damn about. Also spelled America wrong, it's Murica! You also should put Murica more in the center, because as we all know Murica is the center of everything as we also don't know what the world geography is like.

I pre-ordered the PS4 before Microsoft did its 180 regarding the Xbox one.

Seeing that the Xbox one won't launch in 2013 here only confirms I made the right decision.

I feel sorry for my fellow Dutchies who were planning to get the Xbox one though.

Logical, if they're short of time to finish localizing their console for the multi-5 languages. It's the least number of potential customers per language, even if Sony didn't already crush them in Europe.

Remember when we thought it was strange for the CD-project RED guys to not be able to play Wicher 3 on Xbox One =),,,,, Oh yeahhh Battlefield 4 =) Hehe yeh it sucks now when the Xbox One seams like a better buy than when it was first shown but as many others had said I was and will be getting a PS4 first any way.

And by the time it arrives I probably don't have to buy a kinekt at all so you win some you lose some is what you say right.

And Remedy =) por Remedy with Quantum Break being at least a timed exclusive for Xbox One. It probably wont be out before Xbox One is released like Bf4 is definitely gonna be but still.

Edit: And yeh MS you are launching a console in 3 months, are you sure you are ready?

@crusader8463 said: When was the last time the X-Box 3 had a story that had good news for it?

DRM reversal. Self publishing for indies. Every console doubles as a dev kit. Where have you been? Those were all in the last several weeks.

They could publish a story about Xbox One not being programmed to kick you in the balls repeatedly, and I guess technically that's a positive thing considering the alternative, I wouldn't call it "good news" because that would put it in the same category as free ice cream.

They could give all the free ice cream in the world to indies and I doubt that would make them come back in droves and produce like they did earlier in the 360 cycle before they got kicked in the balls repeatedly with patch fees and other nonsense. So I guess that brings us back to our first point.

I've heard rumors of production delays and firmware problems with the One, perhaps this is the result of that.

They've made some great changes, but you really do only get to make one first impression, and I think E3 did irreparable damage that can only be fixed by producing a good system and most importantly, good games.

Legal issues in those countries regarding MS policies is probably more to blame here than localization, though both are valid reasons for a delay (and so is releasing in larger markets first).

This also isn't a new thing for consoles at all. Has there actually been a same day/week, worldwide launch before?

Whatever, none of this matters. There are still a ton of questions around both consoles so it would be better to wait and see than buy either at launch.

Christ, they've had years to prepare for the launch, and it seems like every month there's news on something changing.

It's a good thing the current generation lasted so long so Microsoft would be ready with a well defined plan, policies and in full control of everything as to not leave anything to chance or improvisation for a strong launch.

Oh right...
