Yeah, Fez Has a Release Date

The lengthy development of Fez has come to a close.

After years of development, a couple of re-designs and a few public gaffes later, Fez is finally done.

Designer Phil Fish announced last night on Twitter that Fez would be released via Xbox Live Arcade on a rather appropriate date: April 13. You’ll only be paying 800 Microsoft Points ($10) for it, too.

Fez was first revealed all the way back in 2007, and loosely had a release window several times, only to be delayed over and over again. The game was a source of controversy at this year’s Independent Games Festival, as Fez won for “Excellence in Visual Art” in 2008, which also came with $2,500, and the “Seumas McNally Grand Prize” this year, which came with a much bigger pot: $30,000. The rules on entering twice may change next year.

Fish also made waves around the same time for deeply criticizing Japanese video games during the Q&A session for Indie Game: The Movie, following a question from a Japanese designer in the audience.

In a few weeks, though, we'll have the best way to judge a designer: their game.

@Mesoian: Well I disagree. I wouldn't want to spend money on a product that supported human trafficking, for instance, regardless of its quality.

And while I understand why you would say that, if you actually do that, you will never buy anything in worry of where the money, which you will never see once it leaves your hands, goes.

I honestly don't know if the Jeans I bought last week were made in a sweatshop. I don't even know how to find that out. But I needed new pants and I don't regret buying them and will not lose sleep about trying to figure out whether they were made by suffering or not. I'd rather give money to, for example, groups who actively fight against human trafficking then worry about whether the thing that I just bought that I like or I need supported human trafficking without my knowledge.

What was the suggestion about the Orson Scott Card/ Shadow Complex stuff? Buy the game and if you feel funny about it, donate 5 dollars to the human rights charity of your choice? That's how stuff like that should be handled, or you will never stop driving yourself crazy.

Curious as to how many people claiming they won't buy this game because Fish is a douche ended up buying Team Meat games.

I like to think that I'm pretty good about separating the art from the artist when it comes to purchasing decisions, but Phil Fish's behavior really rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it was partially because of Patrick's dismissive attitude over the incident, when he previously wrote that article on sexism in the fighting game community. Patrick just shrugged off Fish's comments with, "that's just how he is", when that was the same argument Aris Bakhtanians' defenders used when he was harrassing Miranda Pakozdi.

There is a huge difference between a poorly worded opening to a very valid argument, and actively advocating the discrimination and subjugation of women.

@Mesoian: I think your Christian Bale analogy is kind of interesting, but the truth is that there are only so many good Batman movies but there are tons of good videogames. And, as someone else pointed out in a previous post, that's one asshole amongst a huge crew of probably not-assholes. Phil Fish is like one of three guys working on Fez or something, right? That's 33% asshole.

If you want to have a more realist view of the whole thing, I'd say that the amount that Phil Fish is an asshole is more than how good his game looks. Maybe he'll prove us all wrong and release a really awesome game that's everybody's must-play game of the year. I really doubt it cause usually pretentious assholes aren't that great.

What was the suggestion about the Orson Scott Card/ Shadow Complex stuff? Buy the game and if you feel funny about it, donate 5 dollars to the human rights charity of your choice? That's how stuff like that should be handled, or you will never stop driving yourself crazy.

The following might have turned out rather long and convoluted, the underlined part is the most important. I'm going to sleep now and may or may not want to pick up this conversation in the morning should you respond.

I'm not sure I understand this highlighted part in your post, if I actually do what? What are you suggesting I'd be doing? Thinking about where my money went everytime I spent it? I don't. The (rather extreme) example I provided suggests a situation where I know where my money will go if I spend it. (The guy saying that we're totally lazy and hypocritical for not examining everything we buy if we're to have that attitude might be on to something but whatever, there's still a difference between unknowingly and knowingly supporting something.)

My point was that if I was informed that the money I was about to spend would go to some cause, or maybe person, I dunno, that I would disagree with supporting, then I would think twice spending that money. Not because of the merits of the product, which I agree should stand on its own, but because I wouldn't want to give that person or organisation my support, financial or otherwise.

Like in my example, people know that the money spent is going to this Phil Fish. Some react to that by saying "Fuck that guy! I'm not giving him my money, I don't care if he made an awesome game or not!" and they are willing to give up on a potentially great product for the sake of not supporting him, for them it's worth it. In my own opinion, a game, even a really good one, is just a game and is not that big of a deal to give up on for the sake of making a statement, and I believe that, that is what people who oppose him want to do. They are voting with their wallets and saying "It's not alright to be a dick".

Maybe Phil Fish is a dick, maybe he's actually a decent guy and the people lashing out have the wrong or underinformed impression like you've been suggesting. I don't know and I personally would not, not buy his game if it turned out that he was, in fact, a dick. In this case I simply don't care, because the way I've seen it he's certainly not been hurting anyone. Other people on the other hand, after having become aware, do care and I think it's within their right do so and to speak out about it.

Edit: Oh and also for the record, I don't own a Xbox 360 so unless this game comes to Steam or PSN at some point I won't be able to play it. I think I would like to, but I haven't seen enough of it yet, waiting for the quicklook etc.

@Apathylad: I thought that you were talking about what he said at the panel about Japanese games. But in any case, telling people to suck his dick isn't anywhere near the same level of what Aris did. He was telling people who didn't know the whole story but were giving him shit to fuck off. I don't see a problem with it. It isn't PC and generally bad PR, but that is it.

Those who aren't going to consider this game based on its merits as a game are weirding me out. Did anybody not play L.A. Noire simply because the work conditions were awful at the developer? Itagaki is a misogynistic lunatic but designed some pretty kick-butt games...I mean, if we based buying a game solely on the person behind it (which only makes sense if the person was a crazed Hitler clone or rapist or terrorist or something) I imagine there'd be a ton of games we wouldn't want to play. Activision is a rather soulless corporation, but it publishes some truly great games. Same goes for EA.

I'll get this game if it's great, which it looks probable that it is. If it doesn't work out, I won't. It's that simple. My opinion of Phil Fish as a person has nothing to do with my opinion of Fez the game.

I for one will be buying this game for two reason:

1. It looks incredible.

2. Doing so will piss off whiny fanboys, many of which are OUTRAGED about Fish's behavior without realizing they do the same thing or worse almost every day they whine on the Internet.

It's an extreme version of the situation I find myself in with Fez, but I think Roman Polanski is a pussy. He's a deplorable human being. But Rosemary's Baby is still one of my favourite films of all time, and I can separate the art from the deplorable, pederast pussy. And Chinatown's pretty great, too. As many have said, Phil Fish is a douchenozzle--a massive one at that. Fez still looks hella interesting, though, and if the trial holds up, I'll give the douchenozzle my money 'cause it's a good game.

I think C418 (the guy who did the music for Minecraft) said it best:

A bit saddened at all the hate towards FEZ. I guess Phil did get a bit overboard on his twitter account. However, consider this.

Behind FEZ is also the programmer of it, renaudbedard, who is such an amazing guy. He's always fun to hang around.

And then there's Disasterpeace with the insanely amazing soundtrack of course. And don't forget BeeMickSee and his top notch sound design.

And then there's the amazing animations from Paul Robertson, adamatomic and Annabelle Kennedy.

So phil_fish made the design and art for FEZ, but there's also this team of great people. Even if you don't like Phil, they are loveable.

I guess I'll be buying it in a year when the XBox exclusivity agreement expires and it comes to Steam. A year is too long to hold these games hostage to a single platform. :(

Considering how long this game took to make I have to wonder if it would have ever gotten finished if it weren't for the stew that the exclusivity deal brought in (I don't know, just curious).

Isn't his name: Phil "Fish" Poisson? The only place I've seen him from was that 1UP Show e3 special, in 2006, and his name was written like that. I remember him being a seemingly ok guy, albeit quite cynical.

Too bad for the other guys, but this is the man promoting the game, and as such will be judged by how he presents himself as well.

*watches trailer* OMG the camera spins... what an amazing game...

Anywho, that is a bad trailer, considering that it doesn't tell you about the gaming world (beside spinning it), what you do in that world (if i didn't read up on the game, i wouldn't know for sure that it was a platformer), or who the characters are. I might pick up this game, not because of that horrible trailer, but if i hear good things about it from other people on this site.

It's a puzzle platformer. Perspective is used to change what you can jump on and interact with. The rotation stuff is to show off how it's 3D in reality, but the game is played in 2D. Also it's arty as fuck.

Great artists and creators are often flawed people with strange views on the world. It's the way they're 'broken' that contributes to them creating unique amazing things. I don't know if Fez is amazing yet (it certainly looks amazing to me), but if you deny yourself experiences because they were developed by someone you see as unsavoury or a jackass you're just robbing yourself. Assholes are everywhere and they're making stuff you're using right now. They're going to exist regardless, you (and the world) may as well get some benefit from them.

Look to the art, not the artist.
