Yes, Virginia, Modern Warfare 3 Will Have Dedicated PC Servers

Activision finally gives the fervent, vitriolic fans what they've been demanding since Modern Warfare 2.

If you're one of the many, many PC players of Modern Warfare 2 that was, shall we say, less-than-enthused about Activision and Infinity Ward's decision not to include support for dedicated servers, you may now put down your pitchforks and delete your online petitions: Modern Warfare 3 is getting dedicated servers.

You're going to have to find something else in Modern Warfare 3 to make the subject of your Hitler freakout video.
You're going to have to find something else in Modern Warfare 3 to make the subject of your Hitler freakout video.

This news of Activision's sudden 180 on the subject comes via IGN, who confirmed from Activision reps at Gamescom that Modern Warfare 3 will fully support dedicated servers on the PC. IGN says that this is part of a larger effort to show PC players that Activision is still very much dedicated to the PC platform.

While this news is no doubt exciting to potential Modern Warfare 3 players, the publisher evidently still has some concerns about opening up the servers in such fashion. Specifically, the inclusion of dedicated servers does mean that it would, in theory at least, be easier to cheat in online multiplayer matches. This is especially an issue given the upcoming debut of Call of Duty Elite, which Activision plans to use to hold a number of multiplayer-oriented contests with "millions and millions of dollars" worth of prizes.

With that in mind, Activision has apparently said that they will not ship Modern Warfare 3 until developers are sure they can keep the play environment fair and balanced. Given the unlikelihood of Activision missing its planned November 8 release date, we can presume then that the game will be as secure and cheater-proof as it possibly can be by that date, and that any suggestions otherwise will be treated as the maniacal ravings of the lunatic fringe that they most assuredly are.

Sorry Activision, but the PC crowd seems to be all about BF3, and you can't get them back, not that you ever had them to begin with.
I'll get both games for 360, I'll play both of them with friends, and both of them will be fun.

First thing that came to mind after hearing this:

Now, add dedicated servers to consoles, and then you'll have something to brag about.

This is gonna be the first CoD I don't buy on day one. That has nothing to do with servers though, I am just tired of the formula at this point. It's finally worn thin enough to not be worth $60.

IWNet was a hacker infested shitshow. Matchmaking will not stop hackers, it just makes it impossible to ban them in a timely manner.

What about 40 after an Amazon 20 dollar credit?  That's what I paid for Black Ops.

And hey!  Don't I know you from somewhere?  Your face seems awfully familiar. :)

my my how weird this industry is.

I would think giving your potential customers what they want in exchange for their cash would be a reasonable business decision.

No thanks. If they're anything like the Black Ops dedicated servers, they won't be worth anyone's time. This seems like a feeble attempt by Activision to try to sway some people away from BF3 which isn't going to work.

Hahahahaha. haa. ha..

I've heard that one before Activision.

My guess is that you will only be able to run a server by renting it through a certified third party like Battlefield has always done. There is no way in hell anyone is going to be able to just load up the server executable and run it on an extra computer in the house.

@vaportra1l: exactly what I was thinking. dedicated servers are awful when the only people who shell out for them have the worst taste.

Activison is in a pretty bad state when people are looking at an EA published game as a savior. Lesser of 2 evils.

Well at least I'll finally be able to play an updated CoD at LAN parties. But I'm still not all that excited about it. So many other games coming out that have way more of my interest.

Did GB get invaded by angsty teens during the two years between MW2 and MW3, MW2 reviewed exceptionally well and at one point almost took game of the year(Hell maybe it did, I can barely remember) And I personally as a PC gamer enjoyed the over the top single player thoroughly as well as spending a good fifty hours in the multiplayer and enjoying that too. Hating one MW and then proceeding to say BF3 will be "superior" is just stupid, They're two very different games. Also saying MW is unoriginal is equally as silly, need I draw your attention to the original Mega Man series, all were similar "looking" games that could each be enjoyed for their varied levels and boss battles but at their core could easily have been expansion packs had Mega Man been a PC game for instance. As far as I'm concerned MW is the Mega Man of the 21st century, so expect a bunch of yearly pokemon style RPGs featuring the cast of MW a decade or so from now.

That's great. I remember jumping back into mw2 months after release and remembered why I stopped playing. Matches usually have horrible lag and just makes you feel very cheated.

Yo BF3 is coming out this year, I don't know anyone who would buy MW3 on PC over BF3.

But hey, you just go right on interpreting the most absurd thing you possibly can out of it.

Nice bitch-slap you handed out there, however obscure the reference may have been.
That reference isn't obscure to old men like me and Alex.
