You Will Not Play Destiny 2 This Year

But you might play a "large" new Destiny expansion, you know, if you're into that sort of thing.

It turns out Jason Schreier's fine, borderline-obsessive Destiny reporting over at Kotaku was correct: the sequel to Destiny (let's call it Destiny 2) will not be out in 2016.

Well, Schreier's report just said "delayed," which I previously took to mean "November instead of September." Activision demands a steady stream of grist for the ever-grinding revenue mill, after all. But sure enough, Bungie itself has confirmed Destiny 2 is now a 2017 game:

Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability.

Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017.

Maybe you should find another game to play while you wait for the Destiny sequel? This one seems nice.
Maybe you should find another game to play while you wait for the Destiny sequel? This one seems nice.

At least they've got some plans in place to hopefully pump a little life into the live game, the plight of which has gotten pretty dire in the last few months with only a slow trickle of minor events to keep diehard players interested. (I'm not one of those players.) Raising the level cap sometime this Spring and adding some straight-up loot is certainly one way to entice lapsed players, but that can only go so far without some actual new content to play through. Maybe they'll go back and spruce up those old raids to make them viable for level-capped players while they're at it? And I'd hope the "large expansion" slated to hit later this year will be at least on the order of The Taken King, the only previous Destiny expansion I'd describe as "large" (or "good" for that matter). So in the absence of a full new game, these forthcoming updates sound like at least a little light in the darkness. Yeah, I went there.

I've long held that people who expected a proper Destiny sequel two years after the original release were crazy. Looking at Bungie's track record, the full studio hasn't turned around a completely new game in 24 months (outside of the Halo 3 spinoffs ODST and Reach) in the 15 years since Halo became a thing. So the idea that Destiny 2 would hit a mere two years after Destiny never seemed realistic to me.

The biggest question in all this is, when will Destiny 2 come out? Are we talking a delay of just a few months, with a release to slide in before the end-of-March fiscal deadline? Or will Bungie get a full extra year to make this thing what it needs to be, and avoid the mistakes of the first game's launch? A new Destiny certainly seems like the kind of big, momentous tentpole you'd want to hang your holiday product release schedule on, but then, shareholders need to get their taste, and they're not big on waiting around past the next quarter.

Sick shoemaker burn there!

At least there's an expansion this year. Was worried (?) things would be mostly barren until the sequel. But there's the whole paying $40 more for more game play and all that *cue comment cynicism**

E: more time for the sequel is definitely a positive.

E2: stupidity flowing in me today, I assumed this was an Austin article.

They would have to fundamentally change the core mechanics of Destiny to get me to ever play it again, and I'm pretty sure they hit a sweet spot they don't want to move away from. Having experienced everything it had to offer up until the first DLC, it is a game that simply isn't for me.

Halo Reach was actually a 3 year turnaround. Halo ODST was in fact made by a smaller team. It was the same engine as H3 and didn't have a full multiplayer component. Full development for Reach though presumably started immediately after H3, so that would've been three years.

This is a very Brad article.

As a Destiny fan who hasn't played for a month (I tried SRL, but wasn't enough) I welcome whatever they bring, I just hope they are fair on the price points, especially with this large expansion that is coming.

I still enjoy destiny's gameplay, it's lack of long term content will see me playing the division (and probably getting tired of that, but hopefully in time for some new destiny content)

Let's all just play Dota 2, guys.

I'm actually pretty happy with this. I don't want them to rush in to Destiny 2, and I think if it came out this year I'd have the same problem as I did with Taken King which is that there are too many other games I want to play around it for me to invest all that time into a single one.

The article touches on the current sad state of Destiny 1, but it is much worse than that. Even when you do not consider it as an MMO like game, which it is intentionally marketed as, its level of support pales in comparison to other similar games when it comes to basic upkeep.

The most common comparison is to Treyarchs upkeep on Black Ops 3 which has been superb up to this point. They have provided their players with constant balance patches, and retraction of mistakes within 24 hours. Bungie on the other hand, with it's full dedicated live team has just released it's first update THIS YEAR which was almost entirely centered around fixing minor bugs that have existed for months and continuing to patch the matchmaking that they completely fucked up back in December(and lied about). December 8th was the last time we have had any sort of content updates, bug fixes, balancing of the horribly lopsided meta, maintenance on the abysmal state of matchmaking, or reintroduction of older content.

On top of this the entire community has been completely left in the dark with no roadmap as to how they planned to support the game going forward. Not until literally the day after Activision released it's earnings did they finally give us the most basic plan for this year. I don't know for sure obviously, but Activision seems to have mandated that Destiny 1 go into full scam mode. Destiny has always been a manipulative game, but the strategic timing of everything that has happened over the past few months has led me to believe that Bungie is being forced to do some seriously shady predatory shit with their game. I personally love the content of Destiny, and The Taken King, but I would strongly advise anyone thinking about picking it up to pass, lest it get its exploitative tendrils around you.

Every time I hear or read about Destiny it makes me not want to play or ever own it because it sounds like a huge rip off. Oh well, back to Warframe, which is what everyone should be playing, not dota 2. Brad pushing his dota 2 agenda.

Sounds like based on their content pipeline issues they need to do a rebuild of that which will take a while. Iteration is king and when you can't iterate quickly you end up with lots of problems.

I wonder if Destiny 2 will be on PC since the only other platforms are PS4 and Xbox One and they might want to compensate for those lost sales. (don't know how much it sold on Ps3 and Xbox 360 though).

Edit : Whoops guess I was wrong, I thought the ps3 and xbox 360 versions weren't being made, but a quick google search proved me otherwise..

I still play Destiny a couple times a week and I am okay with this news.

I mean, if it's gonna be a full-on sequel, I want it to really feel like one.

On a slightly different note, I've never understood the way this game's "legs" are judged like an MMO when it isn't actually following that business model. If the numbers go down for a few months, then go back up when a new thing comes out, that is literally the way the game expects to make money - not some big worrying trend. A lot of people have gotten a lot of hours out of their 60-240 bucks over the past two and a half years!

They might have ground half those hours out in a state of numb half-interest while watching Quick Looks on a second screen, but that's still a pretty good value, technically!

Shame they want to keep Destiny balanced with its gear. I would love for them to take a "fuck it" attitude and just give players more interesting weapons/armor that don't fit their weird item budget, let you go balls to the wall, maybe add Diablo 3 prestige lev--ahaha, who am I kidding.

What happened to them no longer working on large pieces of DLC, focusing instead on small, free updates that was subsidised by the microtransactions?

I guess that's a rhetorical question - I never expected that bullshit to last in the first place.

For me, they can add as much content as they like, but it's all for naught unless they implement some bloody matchmaking for the raids!

@paulunga: It's kinda weird how Brad dismissed those games as if they weren't legit, or something. Reach came a year after ODST and provided maybe the biggest changes to the Halo formula anytime previous, and until 5 came out. Bungie is absolutely capable of turning around games in 24 months, and they probably would have again if the game wasn't garbage for the first year it existed and they had to go back to the drawing board for round 2.

I was jipped with the base game, then expected to pay $80 dollars to play the Taken King to get the game "kind of" in a state it should have been in the first place, like Hell am I going to drop $120 for the entire thing. Owners of Vanilla Destiny got screwed.

@two_socks: Aye, and I thought that was supposed to continue to be the case going forwards. I'm presuming this 'large DLC' will have a price tag?

I'm not bashing Bungie for trying to make money. I'm more bashing them for slipping in microtransactions into what is already a very expensive game under the guise of it being a long term benefit, content-wise. That pretty much amounted to a bunch of lazy-ass checkpoint races.

It's ultimately all just a bit shady to me.

I understand most of the community wants this game to leave last gen behind, but I still hope that the next big expansion hits PS3. I agree that Destiny 2 should not be on last gen, but if a new expansion is coming to the current game, I really don't wanna buy a new console just for it. I have no use for a console other than Destiny, as I'm sure many other PC oriented Destiny players are in the same boat as I. (I can't be alone... right? Right?!)

I agree. The talk on the Bombcast about how Destiny had become a very good game with the TTK expansion made me buy it. But I quickly found out that it is not a good game at all. It just went from being an absolutely laughable excuse of a game to a mediocre game (at best). I played maybe 1-3 hours every day for about two weeks on max level and didn't get a single purple item drop (except for quest rewards etc). I'm sorry, but that is not acceptable in a loot game. I was stuck on my low light level while my friends were getting higher and higher.

Yeah, the shooting "feels good", some designs are cool. But when a loot game lacks content and has a broken loot system then it will never work.

And before someone says it, these are obviously my opinions and not statements of facts.

I don't get the thought process behind talking about Bungie keeping players playing, or having new content however large or small on a semi regular basis. It's not as though it's a subscription model. They already have the monies.

I think they need the time, but I really hope what they do is punch the eject button from their current plans.

- They basic mechanics of the game and economy of the game was GARBAGE, the total reworking of it in 2015 shows that.
- The first game shipped with too little content
- The DLC they ripped from the desiccated corpse of the lunched game was too pricey
- The basic multiplayer of the Destiny is still not much fun.
- They screwed the pooch on the story, because they left so much of it unsaid or revealed. The base game was BORING because there was nothing to get invested in.
- For all accolades people want to give Bungie, I don't think they are very clear about how to make a narrative heavy game. They need to learn that real fast or this won't last 10 years, let alone three years.

They totally exploded on the launch pad and made such a mess of the first two year of this game. They have a lot of fixing to do and a lot of things to mend before they go any further.

The prospect of a new expansion bores me compared to a sequel. I don't think they're going to get the ROI they think they are on something like that and should just focus, instead, on just making that new game as good as possible. When you consider the crazy state the engine tech was in when Destiny shipped, it scares me even more to think for 2 they're splitting the team or focusing on too much.

I also don't think people are going to be as likely to come back with rehashed expansion content as they were since that Kotaku post-mortem came out. If it ends up being something that looks like it was cut from vanilla Destiny, people could end up grabbing their pitchforks this time around and won't even consider going for a sequel. It's just bad business.

It seems waaaaaay too early for a Destiny 2 to be even thought of, let alone released. Destiny has only hit its prime within the last year, and will probably stay relevant for another couple years, especially with another major update coming this year.

That said, everyone will probably buy Destiny 2 anyway.
