Zoe Quinn's Top 10 Games of 2013

Alternately known as Zoe Quinn's Top 10 URLs of 2013.

No Caption Provided

Zoe Quinn is the creator of Depression Quest, which is currently working its way through Steam Greenlight. Zoe is @ZoeQuinnzel on Twitter.

Since starting to make games, I’ve sadly become a really bad nerd. I’ve been more and more pressed for time and haven’t been able to sit down and marathon the 60+ hour long games that I fell in love with as a kid. This isn’t as unfortunate as it sounds though--some of the best stuff coming out of independent gaming right now are short games that do something interesting, make their point, and let you get on with your life. Best of all, they tend to be free or donationware, though do consider supporting the developers if you like the free content they put out there. There’s a wealth of really amazing free games circulating around the internet, begging to be shared and loved.

Most of these run in-browser. Most of them are delightfully strange. All of them are free, so you might as well take an afternoon and blitz through these. I couldn’t possibly rank them, and there’s many more that I wish I could feature--I’ll likely submit this article and slap my forehead in an "OH GEEZ I FORGOT THAT!?" moment immediately after. However, this will have to suffice--hopefully even just one of these leads you down a rabbit hole of interesting little gamelings and their creators, much in the way you can lose a night by clicking through related articles on Wikipedia.

Bubsy 3D

I’ve started and erased my intro to this game about 5 times, and I think that in and of itself is a really good description of Bubsy 3D. A lot of what makes this game interesting is how it surprises you, so go and behold how Bubsy’s grown up. Make sure you enter the Cheat Codes upon completion for extra fun.

Cry$tal Warrior Ke$ha

This game has it all and knows it. Best played outloud in a group of friends so that you can collectively feel like badasses as you shout out MANTIS VICTORY SCREAM together.

Candy Box

Candy Box starts out wonderfully minimalist and continues to surprise you as it evolves and shapes itself into something completely different. It’s possible to totally miss the game in it if you discount it on first blush. One of the nicest parts about it is how you can let it run in the background and come back to it at will.

A Dark Room

This looks really similar to Candy Box but takes it in a completely different direction. It’s also got some of the most compelling writing I’ve seen in a game this year, and I fell into it instantly and didn’t want to come back out.

Save the Date

Save The Date takes an interesting turn from dating simulator to… well, I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise. Give it a few playthroughs. Save The Date is like that one really observant friend you have that surprises you by noticing things you weren’t even paying attention to yourself. It’s also an interesting examination into how and why we tell stories.

Sounddodger

Sounddodger is… well, for lack of eloquence it’s fucking beautiful. This game is a fresh take on music games, and the music selection is diverse and manages to avoid resorting to ONLY dubstep and jpop like so many games of it’s genre.

Desert Hike EX

This one holds a special, horribly biased place in my heart as a game that pokes fun at Burning Man and Silicon Valley startup culture while being an entertaining and difficult Oregon Trail-like.

Sacrilege

Sexuality is often portrayed unrealistically in all media, and games are scarcely an exception. Sacrilege unflinchingly examines parts and perspectives of sexuality I haven’t seen well-represented in games, while making it relatable, human, and most importantly honest.

Pause Ahead

Pause Ahead is a platformer wrapped around a clever mechanic and should be a very good pick for fans of the genre with a twist. See if you can figure out what that twist is.

Room of 1000 Snakes

Finishing up with another amazing game from Arcane Kids, you are an adventurer who must learn the mystery of snakes. Make sure you play this one with sound, and stop by the gift shop after.

Ugh, just like an indie to only put indie games on their top ten list, I'm going to go ahead and bet any other indies that get featured will do the same thing.

For the past few years indie games have constantly been above and beyond AAA games. You need to grow up.

@chuddy: Wow, that's charming.
What's wrong with having unique taste? What's wrong with enjoying things that aren't mainstream? Isn't that why we have a diverse array of things like games, movies, music? Should we all only watch summer blockbusters, listen to pop, and play Call of Duty?

And, is liking these things strictly a female trait?

Seems pretty narrow-minded to me.

Add me to the list of people who are just interested to see a list of games I'm not familiar with. Because diversity is pretty fuckin' cool.

Putting aside the disgusting sexist nonsense, I think this list--and someof the posts virulently defending it--raises some people's ire because it presents a tone of "you're not a true gamer if you're playing triple (or double) A titles." For example, I saw one commenter to this list say that "if you don't know Zoe and/or all the games on this list, then you aren't paying enough attention." Really? Just say what you really mean: "if you don't know X and Y, you aren't a true gamer and your opinion isn't valid."

I've always found a tension between the strident indie community and those who play more "mainstream" games (note: the word 'mainstream' has, itself become a slur). I also think this tension exists in other forms of entertainment (art, music, etc.). Each side, when strongly entrenched enough, can present as superior and exclusionary. Ultimately this is detrimental to everyone because it pushes people away from great games, both indie and AAA.

Just my two cents.

@rolento: its not really unique nor diverse if all the list solely consists of indie stuff.

@chuddy: Just because in her list of games all are independent doesn't mean they aren't diverse or unique. They are all vastly different games, with different styles, different goals, different everything. By your definition, Super Mario 3D World, Forza 5 and Assassin's Creed IV are not any different either, as they're all AAA games.

@crembaw: From her writing, I'd guess she didn't have time to devote to them. She might not have had the money, either; my GOTY list only has two AAA titles on it because I often couldn't afford to spare $60.

Should somebody's GOTY list be invalidated because they couldn't afford AAA titles?

Or should all other GOTY lists be invalidated if they havn't played all the games on Zoes list?

Games for people that don't have time to invest in most games. Not really my thing, but I respect her giving them exposure.

The word "hipster" has lost absolutely all meaning, and should be retired.

Oh please. The word has a meaning. So do all kinds of other words that people try to seem hoity toity about "not understanding anymore." It's used in the same vein as "poser" or " try-hard" or "wanna be" any time those terms were in vogue. It ain't complicated. Furthermore, the fact that it has such a widespread use obviously demonstrates that there is, in fact, a general colloquial understanding of what the word means, because language.

As for people getting upset about this list... whatever? This is one of those "games I played because I don't have much time to play games" Top 10 lists. Certainly not someone who is trying to upset all of you. Lord have mercy. Do I personally think it's silly to not like any of the "AAA" games this year? Sure. I don't see why that's any more or less ridiculous than someone who just reacts "lolindie" but it's the woman's opinion; who cares?

How about the bit where it's hard to even find where the game is on one of these links and what's there instead leads to some weird trans photo blog? 'Cos I'm pretty sure that's the kind of thing you normally wouldn't be allowed to link to in the forums.

@claude: Was referring to the Kesha game link. Maybe it was just me but at first I completely missed that you had to scroll down to find the post about the game and instead found myself following the link/s up top and...wishing I had not.

If you enjoyed the free browser version of Sounddodger, there's a full version on Steam, and it's on sale during Steam's holiday shindig. Even has controller support!

Great list! Playing Soundodger right now.

.....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand i just bought Soundodger+ on Steam. ♥

and edit---

To calm the rumbly tumbly bellies of the children writing sheer cliff walls of text about i don't what, here is your list:

the naughty dog game, the bioshock, the calls of duties and the battlefields. the mario game and grand thefts of autos. There. All lists are this and no other lists exist and every list is there to reaffirm the wisdom of your choices in games this year. Here is a warm cup of milk and a fluffy blanket.

This list is hipster for the sake of hipster, and kinda makes me sad. If this was were gaming was going, I would probably stop playing games all together. Sad thought.

P.S I known people with work schedule's that would put any indie dev to shame yet they still find time to play 60hour games. If its important enough you can always make time.

Some of the reactions to personal Top 10 lists is pretty disappointing. We're not better than this as a community? Is your view of the world so narrow that you can't conceive someone producing a list that doesn't align with your tastes at all and it still being as legitimate as the ones that do?

Don't like a list? Fuck off- not up for debate, kids.

Imagine going to a movie site and you see a link to a "my top ten favorite films of the year" list from an indie filmmaker that you've never heard of and then seeing that his list is all little arthouse films. You then start screaming and stomping your feet and crying because Pacific Rim is nowhere to be seen.

Seems a little ridiculous, right?

I expected some shitty sexism from the giant bomb community (which is terrible), but the weird hate of cool indie games was unexpected. I guess people don't like any list that is exposing them to cool new things instead of affirming their existing opinions? Or maybe not that extreme, but something like that. Pro list.
