I don't understand any of this, what is the PC i'm running now going to do?

Don't worry mate. This is being misconstrued, what the tweet is referring to is BF3 @ ultra settings across 3 screens @ 1080p each while Nvidia 3D Vision is enabled. Your flatmate's setup should be able to happily run the game smoothly @ 1080p (maybe sacrificing some FSAA on the larger 64player maps). Nothing to be concerned about at all.

Sadly i can't fin any article that says that it was based on a 3 screen setup running 1080p. So if you have the source article or video, link me up so i can put it in the first post.

I'd wait for the next series of GPUs anyway.

I'm in the same boat right now. Either go with the new line, or just get the best of the last line for cheap, and maybe SLI them up.

I think the only way to go SLI or Crossfire is with new graphics cards (if you can afford it and with a little extra you would be able to keep it quiet as well), because buying 2 old cards gives you basically the same speed as one new card.

Even when they would have been quite a bit faster I was never able to justify buying a 2nd "old" one to improve my performance, the power consumption would be a lot higher (I would have to get a new PSU), the cards would generate more heat and they would be louder as well, which is terrible and most people really underestimate how loud it gets.

This has to be an exaggeration on the devs part because it would mean the game is more demanding of current hardware (and thus terribly terribly unoptimized) than Crysis was in 07.

probably gonna run maxed out dx9 (which is gonna look just like dx11) in a single 9800GT

No DX9 support for BF3, DX10.1 for ATI or DX10 for Nvidia minimum.

To be fair the 10.1 requirement for ATI is a bit misleading, every DX10 card ATI ever released was DX10.1 compatible. Nvidia never jumped on the DX10.1 train.

Also if you haven't moved on from Windows XP at this point... your probably not that interested in PC gaming anyway.

I'll be able to max it out (generally speaking. I don't need 16xAF and 8x AA or any of that bullshit) on a 1680 x 1050 monitor with a GTX560Ti, right? Surely?

A technically advanced game requires a lot of power to completely max out?! :O

Well, love me tender and call me Elvis!

Maxing out a game, by definition, includes maxing out AA, AF, SSAO, every other filter and resolution. Which I've personally thought was always a pointless goal because of hugely diminishing visual returns and massive framerate hits once you get past a certain point. I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to run it at very high settings, though. People are forgetting this game is also launching on consoles.

Since I'll be playing the game on a 1680x1050 monitor, I won't be needing two GTX 580's to max it out. If not a single GTX 570, then 570 SLI, which i'm gonna have in a few months!
That is true, with that resolution you most likely won't need all that fucking power.

He clarified later that he meant with everything on, which means running it on 3 screens in 1600p.

    OK this sounds better...I'm sitting here thinking I'm fucked with a GTX480 @ 1920 x 1080 for Ultra...MAYBE it'll work???

Maybe not quite, their recommended setting are for high i read. I will not be able to put it on ultra with my overclocked GTX460, but its not like i need to.

    @pornstorestiffi:

I think he means running it @ 60 FPS on Ultra. Also likely he's taking into account 3D or Eyefinity support and higher resolutions than 1080p.

I'm sure you can run BF3 on Ultra with a 580, it just won't run at 60 FPS. It should be playable at the very least. I'm gonna be pefectly happy running it highish @ 1080p @ stable 30+ frames with my 5870.
