Bit.Trip: Beat is an unusual game for Nintendo's downloadable service, Wiiware. I like to think of it as the result of Guitar Hero and Ikaruga somehow managing to simultaneously impregnate Pong after a long night of romance and ecstasy. The reasoning behind the first is that, simply put, the beat of the music is very much an essential part of the experience. Bit.Trip Beat's a refreshing take on an old classic 0
Anyone notice the recent trend of reviving old games recently? Particularly in the downloadable games space? I have. Heck, I've played quite a few of 'em, too. And they were all great. But none of 'em have done anything close to what Bit.Trip Beat's done. What it is, is basically heavily modified version of Pong, with a few rhythm game elements thrown in. Games that have a retro theme nowadays are becoming more and more common, and often, they are actually successful, like the case with Mega Man 9. Unlike Mega Man 9, this isn't an old and established franchise redone in pixelated graphics, but instead it's a "reimagination", as I like to call it, of Pong, the game that started it all. This game: Is hard. Blows my mind. Has fantastic music. Reminds me of Rez HD. Wins the Emmy for most eyestrain. Has motion control that doesn't suck. Has distracting backgrounds, presumably on purpose. Should be called bit.trip pong. Maybe pong is copyrighted? Justifies the creation of a paddle attachment for the Wiimote. Old-school, both in difficulty and gameplay 0
As one of the most intense and frantic games that I've ever played, Bit. Trip Beat revolves around you moving a Pong-like to repel a hailstorm of "beats" flying from right to left across the screen. The beats are bits that move in a set pattern, either moving straight ahead or bouncing, exploding, or anything else you can think of. With it’s simple structure, it was hard for me to imagine anyone taking the concept of Pong and turning it into a decent modern video game that can hold its own, but AKSYS Games has done just that with Bit Trip Beat. There is not much to find wrong with this game, other than maybe it’s slightly too difficult. You’ll be frantically trying to move the paddle so quickly to stop the “beats” from getting past you, the fact this game is based on such an old concept will soon be forgotte...
