    Overview

    Cai Wenji was a poet and composer of the late Han Dynasty. In 195, following Dong Zhuo's assassination, the Xiongnu tribe from the north took advantage of the chaos in the capital and kidnapped her. While their prisoner, she was made the wife of the Xiongnu chief Liu Bao. In 207, Cao Cao, who at that point held the rank of Chancellor within the Han government, paid a large ransom in order to free her.

    In addition to entries in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, Cai Wenji has appeared in several latter entries in the Dynasty Warriors series. Her first appearance in the series came in Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires as an NPC, and was later made playable in Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce 2. In Dynasty Warriors 7, she can be unlocked for use in Conquest Mode. Her EX weapon in this game is a harp. Cai Wenji is aligned with the Wei faction as acknowledgment of her ties to Cao Cao.
