So I tend to run around the map like an idiot with Ninja and Lightweight, stumbling onto people and trying to shoot them.  Yes, I die a lot.

Jeff mentioned on the Bombcast that running around is a surefire way to get yourself killed.

So....I'm playing this game all wrong, aren't I?

Really the problem I have with dying is that I don't draw my gun as fast as the other guy, or I just flat out miss him entirely. Still, I hate camping and would rather just run from gunshot to gunshot.

Just got a FAMAS last night and coupled with Steady Aim I hope to win more of those duels.

You die less if you hold back at certain points, like when the other team has uav for instance. But yeah, it's more fun just to keep moving.

Dual Makarov pistols + Sleight of Hand = John Woo mode. You die but you go out like a renegade.

Running around isn't the problem, you just need to figure out what's the safest path to take around the map. Throwing flashbangs and checking your corners before running blindly into a full magazine of assault rifle fire is a good idea too.

If you DO want to break the run-and-gun habit, though, I'd recommend playing HC TDM.

I think its more of running around no matter what. Call of Duty multiplayer, to me, is knowing when to run around that corner and when to take it slow.

I play the game with a variety of different styles. I can't remain consistent. Weirdly, on maps such as Nuketown I have a habit of moving more slowly and holding the one house down. Yet, on larger maps I tend to haul ass around the area before being torn up by automatic fire. To be honest, you could probably use many methods of playing and succeed in Black Ops due to the fact most maps are relatively open-ended. Sure, some of them see more traffic around certain areas, but if you're in a good position you can use that to your advantage.

Go play sticks and stones. You can run around as much as you like because it's so damn hard to hit people with the crossbow, ballistic knife or the tomahawk

Theres nothing wrong with rushing, it can be a very effective tactic, but you have to know when to sprint and when to wait. If you just sprint around oblivious all the time you are going to get shot in the face a lot.

Running is great. Running around corners, not great. Get in the habit of pulling your gun up before you turn a corner or enter a room. You will die much less trust me

I run around pretty much non-stop and I do fine. I think my k/d is 1.6 or something. Not too spectacular, but I'd rather have a lower k/d and have fun than a higher k/d and sit in one room waiting for people to walk in.

@greatnorthern: Just run, but when you get to a corner, get your gun ready. That way you don't have to stop and pull it out and get blown away.

You have to realize that 9 times out of 10 at close quarters a smg is going to win against an assault rifle.  and vice versa at a distance.  the best way to play the game is to control a sector of the map.  I don't mean that as in the only way, but you will win a lot more gun battles even when you are outclassed if you get the jump on them first.  obviously

Go for the pro version of  the Sleight-of-Hand perk and you can win a few more of those, "Oh shit there's a guy get my gun out and shoot him" moments.

Play however you like man. I swear the funnest way to play this game online is this:

Submachine gun, ballistic knife, tomahawk or semtex, flashbang, c4, Lightweight, sleight of hand, marathon.

My strategy is this. Run around the map at blazing speeds, diving out of windows and look like a dumbass, knife people, dive and shoot your ballistic knife, and use c4 like nades. It's the best, but you dont get alot of kills usually.
