    A friend and I just want to play this together without any randos popping in as a third player or spectator, but we cannot figure out how to do that. Anyone able to figure this out?

    What system are you playing on - XBone, PS4, Switch, PC? If on a console, have you tried to form a group through the console's UI and invited your friend to play the game via your friends list?
