I have about 4 rubbish right now and I feel like I've gotten some of them from breaking chests. The one on the second floor of the manor in Majula gave me rubbish when I broke it for instance. I think the chest below the ballista ambush room by Pate also gave me rubbish when I broke it. Was there something else in that chests or is it guaranteed rubbish? I feel like stuff like key items and equipment would be in steel chests, while breakable chests just have consumables that are purchaseable, so they don't care if you miss out on it by breaking it. It might just be a chance to turn the item into rubbish? Or I could just be imagining things.
Dark Souls II
Game » consists of 12 releases. Released Mar 11, 2014
Blood, souls, and tears are continually spent as players traverse the land of Drangleic in FromSoftware's third entry in the Souls series.
Does breaking certain chests give you rubbish?
So is there a way to avoid the traps without breaking the chest?
Yeah -- roll out of the way or just run. You can usually do that pretty easily for the gas traps. No idea about the crossbow ones.
Shield up for the crossbow traps.
If you break a wooden chest, you will destroy the item as well and instead get Rubbish.
Well shit, I thought as much after breaking my second wooden chest. Sneaky god damn From. I hope they weren't anything too important.

Prob not. It seems that significant items come from the metal non breakable chests, not the wooden ones.
Damn. I thought something was fishy after the second time. Can anyone tell me what I missed from...
1. The chest underneath the room of ballistas?
2. The chest on the other side of the elevator that takes you to the Last Giant boss?
2. I believe that chest had the Ring of Restoration and some torches.
@mano521: Yep, not a lot of them.
@fredchuckdave: Well, then how are you supposed to test if the chest is a Mimic or not? It's either you want the item or you tempt your luck against a possible mimic.
@white: With wooden chests hit once, you have to hit it 3 times for it to break. The object shakes when you hit it so you can tell whether you missed or not (obviously if it's a mimic a healthbar/damage will appear).

Chests take 3 hits to break, I believe. You're free to hit it once.
Adaptability helps with ensuring you won't trigger a trap. I've only seen one chest, with a trap in it and my stat is at 20. Also yeah if takes like three swings to break a wooden chest. One is all you need to see if it's a mimic and it won't break. Also sounds like mimics are a bit rarer this time. I've yet to see a single one.

1. The chest underneath the room of ballistas?
I'll second that first request. I'd love to know what is in that chest underneath the ballistas, the one with the creepy face on the wall. I also destroyed a chest early in No Man's Wharf, but I'm less concerned about what's in there.
