Is there ANY reason to carry around 12 Short Swords and 7 Hollow Shield?

I'm guessing there's no selling these items, but is there any other reason to keep them? For crafting or something?

You guessed wrong. At a very obvious point in the game you can start 'selling' stuff for souls.

Keep EVERYTHING. At one point you pick up a piece of "rubbish" that the game describes as "worthless" EVERYTHING has a worth or use to it at some point. Many items can be later traded to snuggly the crow for rare upgrade stones etc....

Just after you ring the second bell, a new NPC shows up in Firelink who will give you souls for items.

once you get down into the depths, you still can't sell items, but there's a merchant down there that will sell you a box that you can put all your 12 hollow soldier armors and shit and not have it clutter your inventory
