Fellow duders. 
 
Too add to the many annoying things this game, I have been check pointed to death at a very annoying point. When you are escorting the shaman, I wore out my good weapons trying to help the dumb bastard, then he dies and resets my checkpoint and now all my weapons are fucked and I can't go back any further.  
 
Anyone up for some coop to lend a hand? Online now btw. 

Would I have to be at the right level and point in the story for this?

I think that's how it works, but I'm not 100% sure if you're inviting someone to the game.

@ModerateViolence: If you join someone on your friends list I am pretty sure you do not have to be at the same point in the game. If someone is at a different point you just get a warning saying that quest progress for you will not be saved onto your game, but your xp and inventory will be.
