PC dead space review. Weak story, Good level design.
First off let's just get it out of the way that I don't like scary games. In fact, i don't like being scared. That being said, the last game to actually scare me was phantasmagoria, cause that shit was just straight up messed, but on the good side was also way scarier game than dead space. Where dead space wins its points is level design. That game is spread across different sections of the large ship and along your 15 hour or so trek, you'll be sent to through-out each of its corridors and levels trying to unravel the mystery that is "frigen gross flesh aliens". The cool part of this is that when you have multiple objectives you can tackle them in any order, because each ship section has its own little "home base" where you can save your game in most cases buy/sell items, and upgrade your weapons/suit functions.
As for story, I would say this is where the game's weakest link lies. What I mean by this is that the concept of the game only leaves you so much to begin with. Secluded space ship. Aliens. Gun. Darkness? I mean even with the optional audio clips and text events spread around the maps in an attempt to create more depth, you could tell that the story was built around the game play and kind of just slapped together. It even got to the point where I found myself wondering "oh now where are they going to send me..." because it never really seemed new or just interesting for that matter. There are a couple twists here and there, but nothing that really changes your goal, and that is survival.
Graphics are pretty nice looking and also quite forgivable since I was even able to get even the highest settings on my laptop, but here was another big downfall. PC CONTROLS SUCK SHIT. It wasn't so much where things were placed since most were re-programmable, but the MOUSE!!! THE MOUSE!!!! As we all know, bad mouse latency can be one of the most annoying things that can occur, but pair this up with a situation where you must rely on your speed and accuracy to survive, and you'll find that sticking your head in a microwave sometimes is not such a bad idea....Anyways if you can move passed this then dead space can distract you with some of the other things its good at. Like sound. Get a good surround sound system going or wear a good pair of headphones and you will find yourself in literally immersed in hell.
Strap together some nice looking boss battles with the things above and you have a a pretty solid shooter.
