Forget Bioshock, this is the true successor to the SHOCK name-
Once upon a time, there was a game by the name of System Shock 2.
It was a hybrid game that succesfully merged RPG, adventure, horror and FPS game elements to create one of the best games of all time.
Unfortunately the game didn't sell very well and the company that made the game went out of Buisness and the people who worked there split into two groups.
Half of them Went to make a game by the Name of Bioshock, this was a heavily dumbed down version of System Shock 2 for Consoles, The other half went and formed Redwood Studios and Began Work on What became Dead Space.
Dead Space is A RPG/Horror Hybrid Game in the Vein of System Shock for PC and Consoles, it sets you as Isaac Clarke, an Engineer sent as part of a repair crew on a mining Vessel known as the Ishimura, which has suffered a communications blackout.
From the Moment you set down on the Ishimura it's obvious that something far worse that a communications blackout has occured, Isaac is Seperated from his crewmates when they are attacked by Alien Creatures Known as Necromorphs and the only thing Isaac is able to do is Try to Survive and Discover what the Hell happened to the Ishimura.
The Easiest thing to compare the core gameplay in Dead Space to (for those who havent played SS2) is Resident Evil 4, although in Dead Space You are able to move whilst shooting, with you traversing different sectors of the Ishimura solving puzzles using Isaac's two core abilities-
- Stasis:This ability lets Isaac Slow down time to allow him to achieve things that would otherwise be impossible at his normal speed.
- Kenesis:This Ability lets Isaac move objects that he would be unable to move using his Normal Strength.
The RIG is an upgradable suit of armour that Isaac uses, it also allows him to interface with the Ishimura systems allowing him to unlock locked doors and reactivate and repair parts of the Ship.
The Necromorphs make for unique foes to Isaac, with The Normal "Aim for the Head" stratagy made useless be the fact that in order to kill the Necromorphs you must cut off all their limbs. Speaking of the Necromorphs, Dead Space Features Stellar Enemy design making the Enemies appear both Horrific and Practical (From the Necromorphs Point of Veiw).
The Graphics in Dead Space are Dead On, Merging Elements of Stylism and Realism to Create a world that's Cool to Look at as well as Believable.
The Music in Dead Space is also Fantastic with it Immersing you in Isaac's Horrific World And Adding Significantly to the "Scare Factor".
To Sum it up, Dead Space is The Successor to System Shock 2 and Everyone Looking for a Game that Merges Brilliant Game Design with Near Perfect Technical Elements should Check this game out.
