    There's likely a ridiculously obvious answer to this that I'm missing... but how the hell do I upgrade weapons? I have an upgrade kit, but have no idea how to use it.

    click it, or w/e you do on console to bring up the menu to examine it.  Maybe Y.    and select combine, then select a weapon from your inventory that is compatible with the upgrade.
