Just a quick PSA as I don't believe this has been resolved yet on Blizzard's end. I'm not 100% sure how many regions this is affecting, may only be EU servers.
DO NOT trade your equipped shield to your Templar companion. This may cause you to be immediately booted from the game and unable to log back on until someone from Blizzard takes a look at your account and fixes it. While this issue seems to be isolated to trading an equipped shield, Blizzard's official recommendation is not to trade ANY equipment to the Templar until AFTER you have officially accepted him as a companion through the UI prompt.
