Disgaea 4 is days away. Whos going to get it?

Obviously I am. It does look quite good. There is just something about intentionally broken games that I like.

Who else is on board?

This guy.  I'm temped to wait for the PS Vita version.  The inclusion of being able to skip animations in the PSP version of 1 and 2 halves the amount of time needed to grind, making them the best versions in the series.  That might be enough to make me wait.

I'm not willing to throw several more months of my life away just yet.

(But I will, eventually).

I have never actually gotten more than 10 hours into a disgaea game but this time I feel different. Mostly because I am too easily tempted to cheat at PS2 games and I have a hard time playing PSP games for very long.

I got my Limited Edition in the mail yesterday!

I've been staring at a copy of Disgaea 3 in my local game store for months now. I'm a little unsure if I should buy it. Sell me on these games.

It's a tough sell because these games are super niche.  At first it looks like a Final Fantasy Tactics type SRPG, but the more you play the game the more it becomes obvious that it is a time-management game. Don't be scared though.  I believe that one of the great design choices of this series is that you can choose your own complexity level for the series.  To beat the main story all you really need to do is create a couple of characters and hit attack enough times to level up, but if you want to go deep, there is more complexity hidden under the surface than most games.  Then there is the amount of content, hell, my Disgaea 2 save on PSP is over 450 hours and counting.

... I STILL have to play the first.

Sadly have to wait longer over here, still no release date.

Its an SRPG that is really hard at its surface until you figure out how to break its systems, then you start doing crazy awesome shit.

I will.

Also the trailer for it is probably one of the best trailers around.

#12 Posted by Catolf (2653 posts) -

i might... still on the fence to pick this up, i might though.. i like Srpgs and this one looks the best (i have the first two)

I probably won't pick it up on the day it comes out (won't have the money), but I will get it sometime soon, hopefully.

Should I start with this one? Or play one of the earlier ones first?

#15 Posted by SpunkyHePanda (1610 posts) -

Yes please.

#16 Posted by JackSukeru (5909 posts) -

I only played the first one and I bet this one doesn't have Laharl either so...pass.

#17 Posted by iirobdog (27 posts) -

@RockmanBionics: Yeah, I'm told the first one had the best story, but does anyone think the iteration of 4 maybe makes it worth starting there? Story usually isn't that important to me

They're all stand alone stories, except for some references, but those are more like in jokes

#19 Posted by JackSukeru (5909 posts) -

@iirobdog: They seem to all be self-contained stories so I don't see why you could not. Also, as mentioned I didn't play any of the games past the first one (and I didn't put in a ton of hours past the main story either) so I can't really speak for the later ones gameplay, but I'm sure it must both look better and play better by now.

#20 Posted by Bocam (3706 posts) -

@RockmanBionics: Laharl is in every Disgaea game a long with Etna and Flonne

#21 Posted by RavenX302 (258 posts) -

I am going to get it for sure. I haven't turned my PS on to play games sense Yakuza 4 and this is exactly the kind of game I love.

#22 Posted by JackSukeru (5909 posts) -

@Bocam: Checked the Wiki, I was under the impression that he was only in the latter ones as a unit. That said, brief cameos don't really spark my interest.

Truthfully though, these are all just excuses made to to keep me from buying another 100+ hour RPG, feel free to ignore my shallow whining.

#23 Posted by Bocam (3706 posts) -

@RockmanBionics: They aren't really brief cameos.

I tried to get into Disgaea with part 3 and I really liked the dialogue and the world it set up, but couldn't get into the actual game play at all. All I ever really did was set up a bunch of people near one enemy and then attack and hope it did a combo attack with the other allies to do more damage. I was never really sure if I should be grinding or doing something different.

Got my "your product has been shipped" confirmation email on Friday so hope I'll be seeing it within the next few days. Yay :D

#26 Posted by JackSukeru (5909 posts) -

@Bocam: Fine! So I dont know anything, I admit it!

Also those scenes were way funn-STOP MAKING ME WANT TO PLAY THESE!!

#27 Posted by Chaoskiller2000 (306 posts) -

I am and very excited about it! I personally liked the second the best hope this one is as good or better!

My copy is on its way. I'm a little underprepared for a four or five month long gaming session, so I suppose I'd better go stock up on pizza, rum, and ice cream now. Oh sweet momma, this is one of my favorite game series and I cannot wait to get back into another one.

I bought absence of justice for ps3 a few months ago and have yet to play more then 2 hours of it.. it seems fun and i like the combat style / art style but having to learn everything seems like a tedious task that is keeping me from playing more :(

#30 Posted by 5socks5 (189 posts) -

Ughhhh should I get this one or the 3rd one? Help me out duders.

#31 Posted by Chaoskiller2000 (306 posts) -
@5socks5: I would get the 4th one. The 4th features HD sprites and in my opinion the 3rd was the worst in the series (still good just not nearly as good as the others).
#32 Edited by kingzetta (4307 posts) -

I'll get it sometime, but I haven't enjoyed the last 10 J-RPGs I've played inducing disgaea 3

#33 Posted by AsherV20 (65 posts) -

I've had a really strange relationship with the Disgaea franchise.

I bought the first Disgaea twice, once for PS2 and again for PSP and never put more than 10 or so hours into it. I don't like how it seems like Laharl is the only useful character, at least from as far as I ever got. Disgaea 2 sunk its teeth into me and didn't let go for over a year, sunk in over 200 hours and did a bunch of the post-game stuff. Disgaea 3 I liked for the most part but couldn't get my head around some of the new systems it introduced and fizzled out, in spite of starting it twice. Got 4 comin' in the mail and I'm really lookin' forward to it, hoping this one clicks with me.

I'll take 6

#35 Posted by iDarktread (1206 posts) -

Damn, too many games coming out this year. Going to have to skip this for now...

#36 Posted by Enigma777 (6070 posts) -

I was but I figure I should probably wait for the Vita version. Disgaea has always been more fun on the go.

#37 Posted by Devil240Z (3315 posts) -

I'm going to pick up my copy at midnight. Just a couple more hours.

#38 Posted by FluffyZombeh (57 posts) -

Fuuu, can't wait until tomorrow morning to pick up the limited edition.

#39 Posted by Devil240Z (3315 posts) -

First impression. Pretty good. I wonder if there will be a QL.

#40 Edited by Devil240Z (3315 posts) -

Really liking it. Alot of the stuff that might have made me not want to play the old ones is gone. Though never played 3 so I don't know if those issues were fixed then.

Does anyone know when you get the ability to create your own maps and such?

also the music isn't so good that they needed to keep it around for 4 games...
