The numbers are starting to come in, and while DmC is currently the best selling game in the UK (knocking out FIFA), it's barely managed to sell over a third of what DMC4 did in the same launch window. Although we won't know the exact numbers until anyone but Capcom themselves releases them, that won't be for several months. Wonder how the sales will be in the US since this game had an estimated 180,000 preorders across both systems before it released, but between this and DmC getting knocked out of the top 100 on Amazon (while the HD collection is still on there, mind you) so far it's not looking hot.

EDIT: Japan sales are in, DmC sells 1/2 of what DMC4 did in its first week

    No Caption Provided

DMC4 came out on a Friday in the UK and Japan as well, giving DmC a three day headstart for its opening week and it still underpreformed. All we're waiting for now are the US sales, which probably won't be announced until February.

It's funny how people have turned around on DMC4 when DmC came out. These are probably the same people who shat on it when it came out (and never played it).

Well, this game has yet to release on the PC.

But this actually got me thinking: as much as I am looking forward to playing this game, why would they want to try to reboot the franchise out of its niche audience? I'm confident I'll like the game but when you put thought into it, isn't this whole decision kinda weird? The franchise might have been somewhat niche, but it was certainly sustainable. And honestly, how mainstream is a game about slaying demons in a cheesy-social-criticism-laden limbo dimension ever going to be? It's not exactly the same pitch as Call of Duty's. Then again, maybe I'm not really grasping the intent of this change of direction at all, since I haven't been following the whole topic too closely.

I guess they took a risk. Let's see how it turns out. I, for one, will be buying it on Steam, and maybe lots of people are holding out for the 60 fps as well - so perhaps this figure isn't all that telling.

Also, does this estimate account for digital downloads, which have become exponentially more popular since the release of DMC4?

Sad. However, I do think it's worth noting that games have been selling worse in general, especially since back then. Inflation(or deflation, terrible at my terms) should be considered. That being said, I hope it does well enough to justify a sequel. The bad thing is, for those that want the game to fail because it isn't what they wanted out of the series, this won't bring the old DMC back. If anything, it'll just kill the series, as well as quite possibly kill Ninja Theory. Three poor commercial performances in a row is hard to spring back from. So yeah, the end result could be that no one gets the games they want, and then a bunch of talented people are out of jobs. Yaaay. But hey, at least the game that was an affront to the series did poorly, right?

DMC4 had the best combat in the series, and while the game's story and structure were mediocre it wasn't a bad game by any stretch. Many people enjoyed it despite some obvious flaws, and it reviewed pretty favorably as well. Nero as a character was redundant and entirely unnecessary though, and the Devil Bringer could have easily been another one of Dante's styles.

A lot of old DMC (not all but a lot) fans weren't happy with the direction this game took, me included, so it is no wonder the game took a hit. I'm sure it'll find a fanbase seeing as a lot of people here seem to like it but I'm not overly surprised. I would bet the game is hard to sell to the casual market as well just because of the look. I could see it doing a bit better as people talk about it more and give it a chance but capcom really shot themselves in the foot here

How is it doing compared to other NT games?

@Quarters: It won't bring the old DMC back because the team who brought you 3 + 4 have moved on to other projects (and in some cases companies) anyway (such as Dragon's Dogma which is getting a sequel).

The bomb crew were right. Everyone will use this in an attempt to slight DmC when in reality thousands of people reading the news that the game knocked FIFA13 off the chart top spot will only boost their sales, and they didn't even have to lift a finger. People continue to talk about this game.

Never played a Devil May Cry game before, I bought this one on PC and looking forward to it.

I really think the recent trend of deep discounts on fairly new games is killing the game industry.

Yes, right after I swore to blow this reviewing conspiracy wide open.

In reality, I just thought it'd be funny to parody the insane shitstorm that was going on in the comments section, so I cancelled my auto-renewal and wrote up a dramatized version of what some of the more crazy vitirol was for laughs. And considering that the image of my cancellation and subsequent tinfoil hat posts made rounds on across the web and to neogaf of all places, I got more than my fair share of laughs that night. Unfortunately some of the more savvy members started to catch on when they went through my post history, oh well.

    @TheSouthernDandy:

Or because selling just one third of what the previous title made is bad, especially when the point of the sequel was to make it "mainstream" and you pissed off a dedicated fanbase to do so. This might really kill the Devil May Cry franchise off permanently. You can't rely on it ordinary gamers to pick up the game if you plan on making a sequel and it's going to take a whole lot of wooing to get back the original fanbase.

No one said it was a failure, but if you compare it to the previous games in the series sales wise in the UK (again, the US numbers haven't come out yet) then only roping in a third of what the previous game did in the same timespan isn't great by comparison... especially considering January tends to be the dead month for videogame sales. But what really matters is what Capcom's expectations for this game were and if it will meet them in the coming weeks, because the whole purpose of this reboot was to reach out and expand to a wider western audience. I'm really curious to see how the PC version of the game will do, because that's the only version I might look into picking up on a steam sale at some point down the road.

Agreed. Ignoring the combat and the lackluster boss fights, DmC seems to be leagues beyond DMC4 in terms of the overall quality of the game, which is sad that it's not doing so well sales wise as of now (which could easily change when we get other numbers in).

Like DMC3 or the sub-million tragedy that was Bayonetta, it's just another instance of a classic, top-tier game going unappreciated by the moronic, mouthbreathing masses.

Clearly that's what this duder is getting at.

No, I decided to get an account because I wanted to talk about Persona 4 Golden, the Ghibi RPG coming out, and Fire Emblem Awaking but I saw this topic and decided to respond here first because it's interesting topic for discussion. The reboot of a major franchise just flopped, after a both long controversy and with the developer and publisher sticking to it's guns. We could be having arguments and debates about why it happened. The general state of the gaming market? Deflation of units sold thanks to the current market. The fact the current generation of cycles is heading towards the end of it's cycle in about two years? Because the niche audience wasn't so small? Voodoo?

Instead we have a bunch of people unwilling to admit this is a bad sign, because 'we where always at war with the fanboys/East Asia'

The sterling was at an all time high in 2008 and in 2012 all game sales in the UK are down 17%(digital is higher than it's ever been though so a Steam release should pick up sales a bit, not a whole lot). Yeah I think the UK is in a transitional period, a lot of younger kids are preoccupied with their smart phones it seems in the UK, something Patrick keeps bringing up and fewer and fewer of them are buying games. Also the economy doesn't help.

Yeah, that definitely could account for it. I mean this game has been getting crazy amounts of free advertising in the form of controversy so it has to be (at the least) on more peoples' radar than the previous games. But then again we are in a weird position with electronic entertainment and media right now, and it doesn't help that this game came out right after the holidays.

Fanboys of DmC are flipping out I guess. I thought DMC fanboys where supposed to be the bad ones or whatever.

Jesus, and what the Hell is this?? Another user who signs up just to conveniently start backing the OP...

Oh lordy, stay crazy GB community. Now I'm starting to see why so many people took my cancellation and tinfoil hat "Brad is in Capcom's pocket because of Mass Effect 3" write-up seriously here.

lol You're unbelievable. The whole ''I was only joking - derp!!'' is just such an obvious back-peddle, and it's awesome to see you still continue on with this passive-aggressive tirade you have with DmC.

What's the next thread going to be? Something involving the upcoming Vergil DLC I have to imagine.

That is unfortunate. I think DmC is the better game.

The fact that a game rated 90 on Metacritic selling barely a million copies world wide is a travesty. Damn fine game too. Here's hoping MGR does well for them, if anyone has seen the boss battles trailer then you know that this game looks likes its shaping up to be the hypest shit

This is what I never got when it came to people wanting this to fail. I know the people who are going to hate this game regardless do not care what happens to Ninja Theory but if this game does bad it isn't just this title that suffers from it.

This is actually interesting comment because most fans of DMC have moved on to other titles by now like Bayonetta. The fans had moved on mostly by this point.

I think it's actually a reaction to the way the gaming industry operates at this point. Everything has to be a AAA title, AA titles like Devil May Cry must be made to fit this model or else they're no longer considered profitable enough. It's one of the reasons the industry is in the straights it's in and the indie market took off. Hardcore Gamers are mad they are being shoved aside for the casual gamers who seem less and less interested in console games.

@Tidel: Game sales are so hard to track someone really needs to figure out how to do it well. But from my careful research (of 5 minutes on google) they both sold pretty well

@Brighty: It's not that surprising. Niche things don't sell like cod, that's why they are niche. As long as it is enough to support the developers that is the main thing. I hoper Rising does well to and seeing as it has the metal gear brand behind it hopefully it will do well. I just can't wait for my limited edition to come

To be honest I don't think the UK is a very important market for Capcom and on top of that press doesn't have as noticeable effect on sales as the press likes to say it does. For instance about 8 times as much is spent on video games in the US each year as the UK. The US and Japan are much more important markets, for Capcom at least.

@thabigred: Isn't that just because the USA is a lot larger than the UK or is that figure per person/so many people or something
