An AI companion is a computer-controlled ally who follows and aids you through your adventures or who requires your protection. The AI companion's survival is often essential to game and story progression.
Animals that follow you or help you on your journey.
A dog is an animal, of which there are estimated to be 400 million of in the world. Said to be man's best friend, they naturally appear in many video games.
A condition where characters have differently colored eyes. It could be used to indicate wisdom, insanity, or split personality.
Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters which are controlled by whomever is playing the game.
A partner is someone in a duo that shares the same status and/or billing. In video games, you often switch from one to the other because they have different strengths and weaknesses.
Referencing a TV show, celebrity, song, trend, historical event, etc. is one of the easiest ways to get a laugh. This can be either a throw-away gag, like the name of an achievement, or the main subject of the game.
Many games allow you to add characters to your playable group upon fulfilling certain conditions. This is a central mechanic of many RPG franchises, including Fire Emblem and Suikoden. These can be NPCs or even enemy characters that the player persuades to join their cause, through sidequests or dialogue options.
Canines that assist the player.
Sidekicks, different from partners, are less powerful, less important characters who support the main protagonist and generally stick by their side.
The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.) is a modernization of the turn-based combat mechanic seen in previous Fallout games. V.A.T.S. gives the player a strategic advantage, pausing real-time combat in order to target specific body parts.
