Dungeon Hearts Review "Match Three for Days"
Prefer Video format? ^
What is this Game Anyway?
Match Three with the pieces flying towards you on 4 rails, match three pieces of the same color to attack the enemy, destroy those pieces, pieces of the same color along the same lines, and the enemy attack pieces.
The Big Draw:
Frantic match three where what you do is reflected in the battle between your heroes and the monster they are facing.
The controls in Dungeon Hearts is far from intuitive but the tutorial does an adequate job of explaining the concept. In most match threes the pieces are linear and affected by gravity, limiting the possibility of moving pieces; however, in this game you can move pieces freely along the grid(granted there isnt a piece in the way). This can make for interesting strategy, but be quick! The pieces move fast and there isnt a whole lot of grid for the pieces to move on.
Now so far its all been fun and games, but Dungeon Hearts brings an interesting piece into the mix, an enemy attack piece. Up to this point your pieces, upon being matched, would attack the enemy and after enough matches the enemy would die and you would move on. Now an enemy attack piece brings another level of urgency, if you don't get rid of the enemy piece, you will lose.
Soon after there is something about hex pieces that weaken your heroes but they don't do enough to really change the battle(not until much later anyway). The game proceeds with much of the same for the remainder of the game with a few tougher enemies in the mix.
There is a placeholder story to set you on your path, I honestly just skipped it past a certain point.
Keeping in mind this is just an indie the game doesn't look half bad. Its definetly basic but colorful, I would say it doesn't significantly add to the the experience but it doesn't detract from it either.
The sound didn't impress me that much either way, it all sounded above average but nothing to write home about.
This game has next to zero replayability, there is no reason the play again save to just play the same exact thing again. This is a beat once, uninstall.
But King! This game sounds pretty good ill buy this right now! You know what? Go ahead I wont stop you, its really not a bad game. But I feel like I should relay what I don't like about this game, its mostly a what if.
My number one problem: everything feels half assed. There, its all out in the open, I pointed out the elephant in the room. This game feels like the people making it either A didn't have budget/time to finish properly or b. just didn't care to make the game as good as possible
For Example, the battles and the match three are the two halves to this game yea? Both feel half done, the battle on screen feels lackluster as hell and the match three is dreadfully boring on its own. I wish the could've gone all out at least one of those to really make it great, this game should be flashy and fun, or it should match up with the music like in that final fantasy music game. But thats really my only rant about this game(considering the like 1 dollar I paid for it. Lets hope there is a much better Dungeon Hearts 2 in the works.
Graphics:2/5
Gameplay: 3/5
Sound: 2/5
Replayability: 1/5
Overall Package: 3/5
Dungeon Hearts as it is, is really not bad for the price and a great stepping stone for something great. Cant wait to see what else they have in store.
