Best companion(s) for a melee-based character?
Just started my second playthrough for Fallout: New Vegas. Her name is Zelda, she's 90% evil except against animals (gonna grab the Animal Friend perk at level 10), and likes using melee weapons. I'm most likely banking on my companions earning me XP against tougher enemies like Nightkin and Cazadors while she keeps back. Not sure if it'd be better to pair her with other close combat-focused companions like Rex or Veronica...or if ED-E and Boone work better. Suggestions?
Why not use the nightskin?
And you can have rex and one other person anyways. So why not rex and boone?
Boone, I don't know whether the recent patch changed his prowess, but can be very effective at range as your wail on your opponents. You probably know. Cass has a shotgun, but maybe you should go for any party member you might have missed on your first playthrough, like Raul, who I believe uses a pistol and can fix things. Not sure about Arcade or the Nightkin NPC, who does have an assault carbine.
For Melee-Based Characters, I think Boone is best, because he'll take care of sniping while your up close.
My Guns-based characters sometimes didn't even have the time to shoot before Boone had killed everything in site. He's fucking amazing. His Spotter perk is not the most useful for a melee character, but it's still one of the best of all the companions. ED-E should be your mechanical companion. You want long-distance backup and his Enhanced Sensors perk makes you less dependant on Perception (unless you want any specific perk that depends on it).
" That's a lot of Boone love! The problem is, with the evil run, I'm planning to side with Caesar's Legion. At what point will Boone cry tears and abandon me? Or can I just tell him to wait when I go murdering NCR like woah? "Are you playing on PC? If so, you can disable his faction check with a mod or through the console, though it can be seen as cheating (also, using the console disables Achievements, AFAIK). I finished a melee/unarmed playthrough with an "evil" character on Hardcore some days ago and, to be honest, I didn't have much trouble getting the 10.000 damage Achievements. I got them naturally through the course of the game, I didn't need to grind or anything. Still, stealth crits are awesome :P If you are worried about these Achievements and don't want your companion stealing too many kills, go with Veronica or Lily. You can even go solo or just with ED-E in Normal. If you don't mind about the Cheevos, get Cass. She's not Boone, but she's much better as a character than him to have around, if you ask me.
Man, Cass is awesome.
Personally I'd go with Verionica.
Boone is indeed awesome. But I felt that he made the game too easy.
Most would say Boone, yes it's easy to get swayed by his cool beret and shades combo but I stole his beret and now he looks like an idiot ! So I sent him on his way.
I would say Veronica personally, she is very powerful and you can give her Power Armour to boot. A lot will depend on the difficulty, Hardcore means most are not helpful as you will have to constantly babysit them against powerful enemies like the Legion making it not worthwhile.
