Do you need to play Fallout 3 first in order to understand the story of New Vegas? I never really got a chance to play Fallout 3 and with an abundance of games coming out this year, I doubt I'll have time to put into Fallout 3 and then New Vegas. So I'm just wondering if it's possible to just skip Fallout 3 all-together and just jump straight into New Vegas.
Fallout: New Vegas
Game » consists of 25 releases. Released Oct 19, 2010
The post-apocalyptic Fallout universe expands into Nevada in this new title in the franchise. As a courier once left for dead by a mysterious man in a striped suit, the player must now set out to find their assailant and uncover the secrets of the enigmatic ruler of New Vegas.
Do I need to play Fallout 3 first?
Nope not really.
You should play it though because its an amazing game :D
Buy Fallout 3 when you have the time.
I don't think you've ever needed to not play the previous game more then with Fallout 3, and New Vegas.
No, but you need to play Fallout 1 and 2 to fully understand New Vegas. Almost everything in the game somehow has a connection or background related to the first 2 Fallouts.
" Thank god because I'll likely never play any more of that weird spinoff called Fallout 3. I love me some Fallout 1 and 2 though. No kidding. They totally pussified the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 3. It made me cry.

No, dummy.

I sank 100 hours in FO3 and don't give a flying fuck about the history of the franchise, mainly because the first two games suck ass.

I've played no Fallout 1 or 2 but was interested in the world. So I looked up alot of info on both games before playing Fallout 3. It's just an amazing world to immerse yourself in. As far as the Topic Question goes. No, you don't need to play Fallout 3 to get into New Vegas as the stories of both games, so far, don't intersect. But, you should at least attempt to play it when game releases slows down. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
" No, dummy. But FO 1 and 2 are in my top 5 games list!

Oh no, the story is too complex for me and the game isn't a first-person shooter." No, dummy.

It's okay to not like the games, but to call them shit is just outright retarded and beyond subjectivity.
" I say get Fallout 3 GOTY edition. "Do this because:
a) It'll be cheaper than New Vegas and you'll get a similar experience.
b) By the time you're done with F3 (which took me literally a year- only with two DLC packs) New Vegas will have no doubt dropped in price too.
c) New Vegas also should have had some patches by then at least.
d) Fallout 3 is my favourite game of this generation so there is no excuse not to have already played it.
No, I've played them and Ray is right. They are pretty shitty. Sorry to break your nostalgia, but they don't hold up." @Raymayne said:

I don't care if you like the games or not, but calling them "shit" is like saying America's involvement in World War 2 is "shit". Video game developers were envious of the narratives of movies and novels for the longest time. Fallout 1 paved the way for video game stories, and were the main influences for games like Baldur's Gate, Planescape : Torment, Arcanum, Mass Effect, Vnampires - Bloodlines, Deus Ex, and the list goes on. The combat system also paved the way for the "easy-to-understand, yet still complex enough to have a good emount of options"-style of combat we see in so many FPS/RPG hybrids these days." @LoLAdriankat said:

I'm not forcing you to like it, but just understand it's influence. You wanna know somethig about me? I don't like playing the Ultima games, or the older Elder Scrolls games, but shit, I'm not gonna call them "shit" just because I don't like to play them.
" No, dummy. These people are known as lowest common denominators. congratulations for being one.
