Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 is an open world First-Person Shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal. This is the second Far Cry game they’ve developed in the series and looks to be the best. Its set on an uncharted island, where a group of brothers and their friends are vacationing. At least they thought they were vacationing. Truthfully they were hiking their idiotic boots right up into a crazy human trafficking and drug dealing operation.
Gameplay Elements
Radio Towers: You can climb different radio towers in the game to reveal more stuff on your map. (Think Assassins Creed’s viewpoint system) In addition to revealing details on your map, each radio tower will unlock a specific weapon for free! I’d recommend climbing the Bow and Arrow tower as soon as possible because that baby costs $900!
Capturing Outposts: Outposts are just small enemy camps scattered around the island. What makes them super important is that once you capture one it stays captured forever and you can fast travel to any one of them at any time. They also have bounty boards that will give you additional “wanted Dead” and “Path of the Hunter” missions.
Path of the Hunter: These types of missions will have you killing animals all over the island. They will get you accustomed to the skinning and crafting system. I didn’t do a single one of these and still unlocked plenty of ammo carrying capacity and 3 weapon slots but you will need to do these in order to unlock the final weapon slot and the best gear.
Wanted Dead: These missions make you a hitman! You are assigned a target and you have to kill him/her with a knife. I captured some footage of me doing one of these for an example of how easy they are.
Review
Gameplay: I LOVE FAST TRAVEL. I’ve never played an open world game where they give you the ability to fast travel almost immediately. I’m not kidding, like I finished the opening scene, then BAM! I was able to fast travel. After you start capturing outposts you wont have to walk or drive anywhere ever again! Weapons and vehicles operate cleanly. Assassination style takedowns are very fluid. The missions are fun but with only 4 types of missions it gets repetitive. The open world is really this selling point of this game.
Graphics: The environment of Far Cry 3 is crisp and tropical and ALIVE. The animals move and look lifelike. Then enemies don’t act like they’re tied to a spawn point. The only thing that was mildly “meh” was the enemies all seem to have the same 4 skins over and over. Which isn’t really a deal breaker; it makes distinguishing targets in the wanted dead missions pretty easy.
Sound: The sounds of Far Cry 3 draw you into the world they’ve created. Put your turtle beaches on and you’ll feel like you’re fighting for the lives of you and your friends on an uncharted tropical island.
Story: Get kidnapped on an island that’s not on the map. Escape captors. Join resistance forces. Take down kidnappers. Save your friends that are still alive. There’s little more to it than that. But like with Grand Theft Auto IV, who gives a damn about the story? You have an open canvas, go paint a picture!
Staying Power: I can see this game keeping its charm for maybe 60-80 hours. There are plenty of side missions, which you can complete before or after you finish the story line. Multiplayer though is something I wouldn’t touch on a game like this. I have Call Of Duty for that.
My Opinion: “Machinima raves Far Cry 3 is like Skyrim with GUNS!” I’m here to tell you that’s not true… Far Cry 3 is more like Grand Theft Auto than Skyrim because it’s shorter and less boring. I stand by my initial recommendation to buy this game.
