If Monolith was bought by Warner Bros., and Vivendi still owns the rights to FEAR, then how can Monolith legally make sequels to FEAR?

By not calling it F.E.A.R. Vivendi has the rights to the F.E.A.R. name, but Monolith still owns everything else pertaining to the series.

So stupid. What's the point in owning the name F.E.A.R. if you can't actually access the content involved with the game? It's not like people are going to buy a game called F.E.A.R. that has absolutely nothing to do with F.E.A.R. Do ya know what I mean?

Yea. Monolith owns the rights to the story etc...They just don't have the rights to the name "F.E.A.R." I just hope most people realize that this is the true sequel because F.E.A.R. Files was awful and I'm not expecting anything short of crap from F.E.A.R. 2.

Yes, people will buy a name. It's sad, but true.

Indeed - look no further than Far Cry 2 for a recent example.

What? Who would agree to that deal? It would be like buying the rights to the name 'Batman' but not the actual character. How incredibly stupid.

Monolith bought the rights back to the name a long time ago.  This is a very old thread.
