Concept »
Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Batadons are jumping stone heads found in Easton Kingdom. They are closely resembling Easter Island moai heads in appearance.
Boulders that one has to escape are often implemented in games as a homage to Indiana Jones.
Cartoon characters are personas from cartoons, which are animated moving sequences that are usually drawn but can be computer animated and can come from television, movies, anime or even the web. They can be humans, animals, or even things usually not thought of as living.
Cartoon physics refers to games which do not conform to regular physics, but the "laws" are for a humorous bent rather than conforming to reality. Sometimes it ignores physical laws, like gravity, or tweaks them, like not being totally blown away by dynamite.
A trap designed to kill off victims by crushing them. Commonly found in sacred temples though industrial variations (like car crushers) exist.
Elasticity is the ability for a character to stretch, contort, and reshape their body. This ability is Mostly seen in superhero related material.
Receiving damage or dying as a result of falling.
Falling Debris, rocks, or other items that may possibly cause damage to the player character.
Galoomba are a species resembling Goombas in appearance and name. They are rounder than normal Goombas and are knocked upside-down when jumped on, instead of being defeated.
Goombas are common enemies in the Mario games.
Grimer is a poison-type pokemon first found in the original Pokemon Red/Blue. Grimer loves to find grimy and smelly places to enrich his unpleasant aroma.
The ground pound is a move where a person in midair somehow makes themselves strike the ground with more force than if they had merely landed. Popularly known as the "butt stomp" due to Super Mario 64's variant, which appeared as though Mario was attacking foes with his rear end.
Any game that involves jumping on an enemy's head as an attack, such as in Super Mario Bros.
Inflation is when you expand or fill up something with something else, usually air, to make it more full or bigger. Some mini-games have you be the first to completely inflate a balloon, or, in the case of Dig-Dug, you inflate monsters to have them explode!
A situation where the player-controlled character loses their life immediately. The quickness of that demise is often a stark departure from the balance of power, and sometimes the rules, established by the developers during the rest of the game.
Muk is a poison-type pokemon from the original Pokemon Red/Blue. It loves to seek out smelly refuse to help it become more toxic and vile.
The ability to change shape. Humans shifting into animals is the most common type of shape shifting.
Damaging enemies by simply jumping on top of them.
The Thwomp is a villain from the mario franchise. He is most commonly found in castle stages.
These giant stone creatures are constantly trying to squish Mario under their own weight.
