@metalbaofu: For PvP It's real bad. For PvE I think the mission selection/matchmaking could have been done way more elegantly, but the people leaving from PvE missions is no biggie as the game seems to scale the encounters on the fly as far as I've observed.

Yeah. People leaving isn't a huge deal in story. I meant to mention that last part I said was in relation to the PvP stuff. I'd still prefer a full team, though. My main problem with the story is that I would prefer to play them in order first, but I can't unless I play solo. Not easily, at least.

Edit: One more thing. I've played "The Saboteur" mission twice now. Both times we got to what I assume is close to the end...about 30 minutes in. Then the thing we are supposed to protect gets destroyed. No one has died without being revived the whole time. We have like 10 extra lives, but there is no sort of go back to checkpoint and retry or anything. It's just over. I can barely tell what is even attacking the thing at that spot. We seem to be keeping the area clear, but it just keeps taking damage. It'd be nice if you could retry a section like that, at least once, before they just end the match. ......I really don't want to play that mission again.

It sucks you can't just select the mission you want and instead have to pray to the gaming gods that everyone wants the mission you want. I have 2-3 missions I've yet to complete and I have to hope one of them even pops as an option and then hope that people vote for that one. Otherwise I have to back out and try again.

It also takes waaaaaaaaay too long to get into a PVE match. Between matchmaking, voting on the stage, character select, the character intros/story bits, it can be pretty frustrating to finally get into a game and then suddenly everyone abandons/disconnects or whatever and have to do it all over again.

That being said I think there is fun to be had. When people actually pay attention to the objectives and we're on mostly the same page it's pretty enjoyable. I still think it's super bogus you have to unlock a majority of the roster. This game very much feels like one step forward and then one or two steps back, from the session I had with it.

The Saboteur is total bullshit, and Archive is potentially even worse. The entire mission is just one long, extended escort mission. The first phase results in failure if the thing you have to escort dies, but the second phase is perhaps even worse because how damn long it takes! Luckily the little minions you have to escort don't result in failure if they die, but because you need 20 to reach the sentry, with infinitely respawning enemies, it's just such a drag.

I really like this game a lot... but none of my enjoyment has came from playing the story missions. I only played them in the first place because I wanted to unlock Mellka ASAP.

Oh, great. The Archive is the one I've been trying to play next, but no one has voted for it when it comes up, so I haven't even tried it once yet. Guess I have something to look forward to...

Every time I've played the Battleborn beta(twice) it felt... Off. It felt not good. It made me super worried for Overwatch, which ironically is what I wanted Battleborn to feel like. Super smooth, extremely satisfying.

I think it has something to do with health being so very high on characters, you feel like no matter who you play you don't do damage. Any game where shooting is a big part of it... That's a death sentence. At least in Borderlands you get could better guns or level up which made you kill faster.

Good thing they have Borderlands 3 to fall back on, because I don't see this being a hit at all.

I'd agree that everyone should take their opinion at face value (same goes for all other game critics/podcasts). I listen to be entertained, not really educated unless it's something I haven't experience yet like the VR stuff. Sometimes they're hard on a game for little to no reason, sometimes even making stuff up or entirely dismissing it... like Jeff implying a couple times that Rainbow Six Siege is some bootleg wannabe free to play game with a bunch of microtransactions, when it's a fact it doesn't do that at all... Halo 5 pushes microtransactions more than R6 Siege. The only thing you can buy in R6 are weapon skins and XP booster packs (XP is never really relevant in the game).

I haven't listened to them talk about Battleborn yet, but it's a fun game. I'd recommend going to Redbox, Gamefly, or wherever and checking it out yourself. I can't say it's the greatest thing ever, but I'm having more fun with it than most games that have come out this year.

Pros:

  • It's something different (it's a first person shooter/action game with some MOBA elements)
  • It actually takes teamwork and some strategy (more so in the versus modes - the campaign isn't the meat of the game)
  • There's a good variation between the characters and their powers (most people don't have a gun, unlike Overwatch)
  • A few funny lines are in the campaign and it has a nice amount of style

Cons:

  • The screen can get cluttered when there are a bunch of minions and player characters going at it
  • Not 100% sure about the longevity or amount of content (I'd say Overwatch has a bigger problem with this. It won't die fast like Evolve though)
  • The campaign's story and design isn't that great, but this game is more about the versus multiplayer, since it is MOBA-like

I finally finished all the story missions. I don't know how we won the Heliophage mission. I was the last person alive, playing as Miko, then I died(no lives left that I saw), but it started the ending cutscene. The boss was almost dead, so I've been assuming my poison killed him like a second before I died. Or maybe I grabbed an extra life and didn't notice? Shit was going crazy, so I doubt I would have noticed if I did grab a life somehow.

Now, if people would play as Kelvin some, I could finish Miko's lore challenges. I've seen him 4 times, but once was on an enemy team, so I still need 2 more matches with him. I've never used him, so I'm kinda assuming he isn't all that great since I almost never see him.

Also, you know what is probably the most frustrating thing to me? Watching my team run from me like I'm the plague while I'm trying to heal them.

I pre-ordered it and have enjoyed it alot. I only have 16ish hours in it since launch due to work schedule but I like it. The story isnt anything that grabs me as I mostly only wanted it for Multiplayer and from what I have seen and played so far, its more like a campaign from COD or Battlefield. Its there to appease the singleplayer individuals and also it adds more ways to unlock things. Dont take others words as final on deciding or not since everyone is different. I love it and wish more people would try it so its player base grows faster but unfortunately everyone thinks Overwatch is the greatest thing since ever, when really it is just a Redone TF2....

I played about 20 hours of the beta and definitely had fun with it. That being said I thought the one story mission I played was pretty garbage. I think the multiplayer stuff is alright but didn't compel me to buy the game.

"A Redone TF2" you say that as if it's a bad thing.

@mcshank: I think Battleborn is making a disservice by comparing itself with Overwatch. They are not really that similar, other than being FPS, and it has become clear that the comparison only makes them look bad.

They would fare much better if they market themselves as a FPS DOTA, a competitor to Smite, Forge or Monday Night Combat with a FPS perspective from the guys that made Borderlands, yet everything in their release window and messaging seems to point out that they see Blizzard as their direct competitor.

I like Overwatch. I like Battleborn more though. That's not to say the two games are even in the same genre but since people are comparing them anyways, whatever... A more appropriate comparison would be to Heroes of the Storm.

At first it looks like a mess of colors but you get used to it after a couple hours. I haven't been able to enjoy mobas for years but I'm having a lot of fun with this one. There isn't as much metagame and builds to think about, you have 2-3 talents per level to choose from and a loadout of 3 items you can buy and the rest of your gold goes in to upgrading turrets and minions. It's pretty simple, yet it has all of the teamplay strategies from other mobas.

I really enjoy it. The campaign stuff so far is okay. It's not special. What I like about this game is the characters. They're all unique and feel different. I also enjoy the mix of having a leveling system while not being a slave to it.

If I play Division or Destiny, I could wind up playing with someone with a character that rolls through enemies that are still a challenge for me. If I want to play with certain folks, I need to be similarly leveled for things to feel right.

Battleborn gives me leveling mechanics and some persistence, but it's largely an even playing field.

I think the roles work nicely and the game is a breath of fresh air. Also, the emphasis on teamwork is great if you have people to share the experience with.

I'm surprised everyone is so down on it. I think the characters are the reason to play, and experimenting with leveling them is enjoyable.

This is going to sound weird, but I've barely played Uncharted 4 because of Battleborn. Something about the characters and team dynamics just hits me right.

The game it self is pretty much ok. The hybrid of level-ups with a fps is an interesting concept . The SP mode is meh, MP mode is the one you want to check out. Though my hate for the games starts not for its aesthetics or core mechanics but lag.I teleport in between games, which is uhhh not so fun most of the time. This problem is a +1 for negativity of the game, developers should really look into it. :/

I had more fun with Battleborn beta than Overwatch beta. However, since the Internet perceive the game as garbage while Overwatch as a masterpiece i went with Overwatch instead. In the end they're both multiplayer games and i based my choice on the possible numbers of the online players.

I get why the staff (and the Internet) didn't like the game. Since this game is one of those games that you can't like from a couple matches. Instead you need a little bit of time to understand how it plays.
