I received the original game as a birthday gift last year and fell into it hard for a couple of months. I believe I either bought or received all of the figures as gifts up to and including the Woody figure, then kind of dropped off after that. I imagine the main reasons for that was because the PS4 launch was coming up and because I was finishing up my last semester of college, so my free time was rather precious to me and I decided to spend it in other places.

It was a fun title for me, and I enjoyed my time with it greatly, but I wasn't sure about my future with the franchise. From reading the wiki for the game here, it looks like they're improving on the gameplay quite a bit, which is giving me hope that 2.0 will be even more fun (and addicting when it comes to collecting figures) Then I saw what was included in the Playstation 3/4 Collector's Edition and I decided to reserve it for the time being.

So what about the rest of you? Did you play the original Disney Infinity and enjoy it (or not), or are you possibly going to jump in with 2.0 and the new Marvel figures (plus some more Disney figures to go with them) Maybe wait it out for a possible 3.0 with Star Wars figures? Or are you planning to skip this game for different reasons, such as having no interest in these figure-based games or because your wallet belongs to the Skylanders franchise?

No thanks. To me, these games are nothing more than the gross physical manifestation of Day One DLC and preorder bonuses, two of the practices I most despise in the games industry.

I'd be a lot more into these games if i could just use the characters without having to buy toys for them. I'm 25 years old. I get some people still collect them but I'm not one of them. They wont be on display on my shelf I'd rather not have them at all.

Course then they can't charge silly money to buy dlc.

Are these games actually good platformers? Like for adults? I always got tempted to bite on Skylanders but didn't, and the Disney stuff is piquing my interest.

Let me know when you can use any character in any mode/story and I might be in.

@mbradley1992: Yeah. I got it for Christmas last year kind of as a joke present, but I was blown away by the fact that it's actually a remarkably good game.

Probably won't be getting 2.0 though as they're leaning pretty heavily into the Marvel stuff and as much as I love Disney, I love Nintendo about twice as much. Amiibo might well be the better choice for me in terms of videogame toys.

Just picked up mine for PS4 from local game store. Now just waiting for the workday to be over and getting home to try it out :)

@mbradley1992: depends what you mean with actually good platformer. The first one wasn't as good of a platformer as say the new Rayman games. But then again Infinity is much broader game, they do have platforming (in a 3D open world) and also driving and fighting hordes of enemies and escort missions. First one had ship combat in the Pirates of the Caribbean part. So they have lots of stuff crammed into the game and make a quite good job of making everything play OK. The game is well made, controls well and looks nice, but it is ultimately for younger players. Or rather it is also playable by younger players. So if it doesn't bother you that the game might be bit easy, then I would call it a good game :)

@maxx2029: I know I've read where the characters from the first version will work in 2.0, but if you get a chance could you let us know if the adventures do as well? I'm curious to know if plopping the Pirates piece on the base will launch that adventure, or if the old characters are toy box only.

I've contemplated getting into Disney Infinity but I never have, mainly because I've heard soooo little about the actual game outside of the toybox. I bought and played Disney Universe (at my son's behest) and the Toy Story 3 game and despite both of them being interesting neither were fun enough to convince me to make that Infinity investment.

I picked it up a couple days ago due to Australia and all and honestly, I am super surprised as to how much im really enjoying this. I payed almost no attention to the first game and wrote it off as being Skylanders, but damn... this is some good shit. With the three play sets I got with it it changes from third person action game to Diablo-like to Tower Defence and all while im playing as Groot? shit. this is great.

@sarahsdad Old playsets don't work, only the characters work in toybox. Which is bit sad, as I for one still have unplayed adventures in old Infinity and the Pirates one was sooooo great.

Also the characters are divided bit strangely this time around. With Infinity 1 it was clear that only Toy Story characters work with Toy Story playset and so on, but in marvel comic universe everything mixes with everything. As a pre-order bonus I got to choose one extra character for free, from Nick Fury, Iron Fist and Hawkeye. I picked Nick Fury thinking it goes well with the pack-in Avengers, but at home looking at the packaging realized Nick Fury only works with Spider-Man playset and not at all with the Avengers story. So I'll be using him only in toybox until I get the Spider-Man playset :(

@maxx2029: Good to know, thanks. Guess I'll be keeping the 1.0 disc around for a bit. As far as the characters go, that's too bad, but not too surprising; they have to keep reasons for us to buy all the figures.

I will because my wallet is angry if it has money in it.

Also I fuckin love Marvel, and I'm already way deep into Infinity figures as it is.

@maxx2029@sarahsdad I asked Johnny V about this:

@sarahsdad: That stuff is stored in the figure, what he means is the toy box stuff, like the buildings and whatever you would get from playing through the missions will just unlock when you plop em on the portal.

Those figures look beautiful, and also I'd do anything for Johnny V.

But actually, I'm interested in the PC port. USB use the portal, get the game running better then a PS4...... sounds tempting.

Do the figures from the first game work with the 2nd?

I keep eyeing that first bundle because I wouldn't mind having fun with the game and owning some of my favorite characters but if I can get Marvel too and not have to buy both games that would be ideal.

For those wondering, here's a pretty handy chart for what works between the two games.

@corruptedevil: Pretty much, outside of what Johnny V tweeted. Didn't even know that, so at least they're still useful for something in 2.0, but I'm still sad that the playsets themselves won't be playable.

@smtdante89: yeah, the Wii U version (what I got Infinity 1 on) kinda runs like garbage so I only played Incredibles. I was hoping I could do the rest on PS4 (which Johnny claims "runs like a dream") but it looks like I'll just have to suck it up and get my gamepad on.

Picked up my PS4 Collector's Edition today and boy was that box bigger than I thought it would be. Haven't had a chance to sit down and play any of the game though, unfortunately. Darn you night shift and the irregular sleep schedule that comes with it!

Also apparently nobody at the place I pre-ordered thought anyone would pick Drax the Destroyer as their free figure that comes with a pre-order.

This guy gets it. I'm too old to buy little toy figures and not get a strange look at the store unless I have a kid with me (which would be weirder because I'd have to borrow a stranger's kid). I love the idea, but the toy thing is a barrier for me.

@mbradley1992: You shouldn't care if the clerk behind the counter at the video game store thinks you're weird for buying a toy for a game. If it's that big of a deal though, you could just order them online from amazon or something.

I'm waiting on the Quick Look and some other reviews. I want to know how much game I'm actually going to get. The big thing putting me off this is the actual price of the toy figures, which are going for about €20 here in Ireland. That's a lot of money to pay just to be able to play as a character in a game and do a few missions with them. It's too much in fact.

@corruptedevil: Yeah playsets here are €40. Most stores are doing two characters for €35, so you save a fiver. The base game looks interesting though and it's a reasonable price. If the base game is worth it alone I'd buy it and then maybe pick up some playsets later down the line during sales or what have you. But if the base game is one giant ad for all the characters I have to buy then I'm not interested.

Same for playsets. The "Guardians" playset only comes with two of the five characters from that group. If I pay 40 quid for the set, am I just going to have some vendor in the game telling me "if only we had rocket and groot to help out on this mission! <please place rocket racoon and groot onto the portal>" then f-that.

@jesus_phish: I haven't played it myself but from what I've heard basically each character can only be used in their respective playset (Starlord can't be used in New York for instance) and the toybox and they each have specific missions that only they can do.

I highly doubt there is enough content in the game out of the box unless you are into making your own levels.

@corruptedevil: I've heard some characters can play in other sets, once you collect coins in that set. So Ironman can play in the Spiderman set once you collect 10 coins in game to bring him over. Other than that you're right, they can't just be used in the playsets, which is a real shame. They should have a free play mode for the playsets like Lego games do and let you play whoever the hell you want, whenever you want. It's not like you can't just switch out the character for a different one if you need a specific skill right?

I'll keep an eye on it anyway. Looking forward to the quick look and the reviews.

@jesus_phish: That was my nice excuse for saying "I don't want to pay $8 per figure to get access to more characters." That whole model was made for kids to get them to pick and choose and to get them to spend more (of their parents') money. As a not-kid, I don't want to spend money on characters.

A large part of me wants to, but as others have said, at 25 I just can't justify buying toys anymore. If it existed as a download, and I could then simply buy individual characters as downloads I would totally try it.
