As 2015 is winding down, I'm realizing that the majority of games I played this year were of the AAA variety. I've mostly stuck to playing my PS4 this year, and it feels like I've probably missed out on a ton of great smaller games. What are some of your favorites from this year that you think people may have missed?

Undertale is at the top of my list right now. I'll probably start and finish that one this weekend.

Axiom Verge was a pretty good one if you haven't played it yet.

For me it's probably Axiom Verge. People really liked that one and it seems to be right up my alley but I haven't gotten around playing it.

Also, if Ori And The Blind Forest is on any of you guys' list, drop what you're doing and give it a go. It's a fantastic game.

Really hoping Ori comes out on PS4 at some point. My PC is getting real long in the tooth.

The most under the radar indie game for me was Black Closet. I need to wrap up my play through of it, but I had fun with it and it is also such a different type of game. It probably won't be for everyone and I'm not sure how familiar people are with that type of game. (Like I have no clue how many people played it or Long Live the Queen)

A lot of the other indie games I enjoyed so far have gotten plenty of exposure this year (Her Story, The Beginner's Guide, etc.)

It feels like Axiom Verge came out 3 years ago...

Renowned Explorers: International Society is a great indie game few people are talking about. It is a rouge-like in the vain of FTL, with some hex-based combat. It's pretty fantastic.

@dr_mantas: I picked up life is strange in the game awards sale after watching GBeast play through the first three episodes. Torn between replaying through them myself and finishing the story or waiting for the crew to stream it.

I would hardly call that a game that "flew under the radar".

Thea: The Awakening hasn't had any play even at RPS, and it seems like a better game than Endless Legend (their GOTY last year.) Nothing on GB or GS either, so I'll go with that one.

Towerclimb is flying way under the radar, but that's a lot less surprising.

Edit: Renowned Explorers is flying so low I completely forgot about it, so that's an honorable mention.

The system requirements are really low. I played it with no issues at all on a 6 year old PC, and even my build was a bit above the minimum requirements (also you can just get a refund on steam if it doesn't work anyway). Other than that, the game was published by Microsoft Studios so hoping it comes to the PS4 is pretty futile.

@evilsbane: Neither is most stuff mentioned here.

@flatblack: Finish it yourself. It's such a great experience.

The Magic Circle came out this year. I played it at PAX, really really liked it, never followed up. I should probably do that before the end of the year.

I know come game of the year discussion on the podcast thing I do, I'll be the only one having anything to say about Infinifactory. I'm hoping I at least might be able to get some agreement for best soundtrack, even though it's just an atmospheric background.

Nice that someone here at least mentioned TIS-100, though that one I ended up skipping because I like my programming simulators slightly less literal heh.

I was surprised that Downwell didn't get more attention given the fact that it's a high quality game available at a super low price (normally $3, currently on sale for $2). I know, it's another pixel platforming thing with roguelike elements and those seem to be popping up almost daily, but it's a really good one.

I think most of you guys missed the "under the radar part".

Probably the one I liked most that was overlooked by many was Chroma Squad. Not a great game but a fun one with a great setting and theme.

I like the idea of wanting to check out all the non-AAA stuff from this year rather than just going for what went under the radar. I feel that's more useful than assuming one way or another.

  • Dropsy
  • Downwell
  • Rebel Galaxy
  • Technobabylon
  • RONIN
  • The Beginner's Guide
  • Her Story
  • You Must Build A Boat
  • Flywrench
  • Invisible, Inc.
  • Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime
  • Massive Chalice
  • Sentris
  • Crypt of the Necrodancer
  • Please, Don't Touch Anything
  • Apotheon
  • Grim Fandango: Remastered
  • Mushroom 11
  • Grow Home
  • Gravity Ghost
  • Lara Croft GO
  • Cradle
  • Human Resource Machine
  • Sublevel Zero
  • The Swindle
  • Galak-Z
  • Armello
  • Helldivers
  • Axiom Verge
  • Cities: Skylines
  • Ori and the Blind Forest
  • The Room Three

Here's the others that are 2015 ports, episodic games which mostly came out or concluded in 2015, or late 2014 releases.

  • D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die (PC Version)
  • Broken Age: Act II
  • LISA
  • 80 Days (PC Version)
  • Tales from the Borderlands
  • Velocity 2X (PC Version)
  • Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate (Polished Version of Both 1 & 2 Together on PC)
  • Duck Game (PC Version)
  • Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris

EDIT: Oh and some games that I can't vouch for as much but totally could by other people:

  • Westerado: Double Barreled
  • OlliOlli 2: Welcome to OlliWood
  • SlashDash
  • Ironcast
  • Luckslinger
  • Action Henk
  • Snakebird
  • Nova-111
  • Prison Architect
  • Pixeljunk Nom Nom Galaxy
  • Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
  • Volume

After the OP mentioned Undertale I figured that we were using a pretty loose definition of "under the radar."

@cloudymusic: yeah not here for a semantics debate. Just looking for games that people may have missed.

Have people played lovers in a dangerous spacetime? The concept seemed really promising but I feel like no one talked about it when it actually came out.
