So I heard Black Ops II will have a 3D TV mode. I like 3D movies but do hate movies that are in 3D that try too hard to show off 3D. I have never tried a FPS in 3D but wonder if it will be an advantage or disadvantage. For me I think it would be a disadvantage as I am a pixel watcher. Meaning I like to watch for shadows or a player’s foot under a wall to try and get a drop on them. With 3D I feel the anti-aliasing is rendered a little different that makes these types of pixel watching not impossible but much harder. Can you think of any advantages or disadvantages to 3D in a FPS?
3D First Person Shooters - Yay or Nay

Black Ops for PS3 already had this. I used it once and got owned, for the exact reason you already stated. The effect makes it look like everything has some type of movement and it's much harder to spot people. The 3D itself was decent enough, but very distracting in the fast-paced world of COD.

Do you think 3D would work better in racing games?

I am not sure, I think in cockpit mode it would work well. I like the behind car birds eye view myself.

It definitely does, Motorstorm and Gran Turismo 5 looks amazing in 3D. It definitely feels more... real. But, again, it still can be distracting - it feels like there's a lot more to process when everything is in 3D, and because it's not perfect. Even with its negatives though, it made Motorstorm a lot more interesting.

Which Motorstorm, Apocalypse?
3D depth in fast paced FPS are a huge disadvantage as depth perception creates a more narrow sense of focus, like a tunnel vision, which forces you to focus directly on portions of an image but not the image as a whole.
You can try this as an example: If you manage to learn the cross-eyed 3D technique try focusing on a single pixel as it moves. after that, just focus on one half image by itself.
you may find that there's more sense of effort to grasp the detail of the whole image when viewed in 3D, as appose to flat 2D images.
So to answer your question; it would depend on the shooter. faster paced games will just leave you with a headache for what is only a novelty but something slower paced, like Arma, may work. 3D would best be applied to survival horror or simulation games i think.
Bare in mind, my only experience with 3D gaming is from the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo on Xbox where they had the split screen option so i was able to play the game using the cross-eye technique. I felt like i was making more effort to focus on the world around me as my brain naturally wanted to focus on the things that seemed to pop out more like the red dot sight...and then afterwards i got a big headache.
@Marcsman: motorstorm 3d rift
@Sin4profit: that's exactly right. I felt I was focusing on things in the map a lot more and trying to process too much. The HUD, messages that pop-up, and the sights of guns are very distracting in 3D - because it either pops out or looks further away. The RDS in black ops 1 was totally messed up in 3D, the red dot was like further away from the sight itself, so it made it harder to aim.
And yes, I feel that in a slower paced game the 3D would add a sense of immersion without getting in the way like it does in fast-paced games.
If you're talking Oculus Rift, then yes. If you're talking pop-out-of-screen 3D, then no.
I've limited experience with 3D, but I didn't find it all too appealing, and it did cause some minor discomfort (I'd likely get past that quickly). I don't believe 3D adds anything worthwhile. It's a gimmick.
Proper VR glasses though, translating head movement into in-game movement, that's certainly sexy.
P.S. How's there no GB wiki page for Carmack's OculusVR aka Oculus Rift? Color me surprised.
Nay. Even with the new Oculus Rift tech coming that's not how I like to play games. Double nay for 3D via the TV, I like resolutions and framerates to be decent and at least on the consoles, developers choose to cut one of the two in half.
3D on console is a farce, it results in inferior visuals and half the framerate. You can get only get away with it on 2D games, even Wipeout HD goes to 30 FPS.
It made Black Ops II and Tekken Tag II totally unplayable.
Edit: Tried it on Killzone 3 as well, same story there - not unplayable but still bad.
