Do i need to play persona 3 to play persona 4 arena?

With summer coming around persona 4 arena is on my back list of game but I wanted to know if I need to play persona 3 to understand what is going on in P4A

It's a fighting game. You fight dudes. Don't think you need to play Persona 3 to get the gist of what's going on.

The main story thread of the game is linked more closely to some of the characters from Persona 3 than the characters from Persona 4, so if you want to get the most of story mode it would certainly help knowing those characters and what happened in Persona 3, but it's possible to enjoy it without having played P3.

I'd say that playing the first 3 or 4 months would be helpful to introduce you to the characters but you don't need to finish it.
