I'm wondering because it doesn't say NTSC or PAL on my DS games? Could I buy DS games in Europe, Australia etc. and would they still work in North America?

Those are television coding systems and have nothing to do with handheld gaming.  Now, are DS titles region locked?  No, except I read that the newer DSi is region locked maybe due to the online store.

DS is region free, yes. DSiWare games are region locked, via the store. Carts however are fine.

yea, i think most if not all handheld devices are region-free (there's no good reason why they should be), but the DS/lite definently is as PenguinDust said.
