Games (from this gen) that had wasted potential.

There's a common pattern I see in this gen of gaming, then I've noticed with almost every other gen while I was alive, that a lot games bring a lot of unique and interesting ideas to the table, but the end result of the experiment is quite underwhelming. A lot of games try to be ambitious and be innovative, but never execute it well in the process and becomes a failure.

What games from this gen do you think had wasted potential?

Here are my choices:

  • Spore
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Far Cry 2
  • Alone in the Dark
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (It was basically the "Assassin's Creed" of 2008)
  • Dark Void

@MysteriousBob:  I disagree, I loved Mirror's Edge and I thought it lived up to it's ideas and concepts. I believe you were expecting to master the game from the start, it's a game that's an acquired taste. It takes awhile and patience to platform across buildings and landscapes. I guess you were expecting it to be like how they were advertising it, to master the terrain and automatically from the start to zip across the levels. Mirror's Edge is a lot like Fallout and the first Splinter Cell, once you overcome and understand it's brutal learning curve, the game can be very rewarding and enjoyable.

Crackdown 2. Never have i seen a series piss away potential by not evolving their formula so much.

God of War 3 - It was too much GOW 2 + HD graphics - The cool parts of GOW2.  Wish they had expanded the gameplay more.

@EpicSteve:  The reason Crackdown 2 failed, is because it wasn't designed by David Jones who was the creative director of the first game and he's known as the creator of Grand Theft Auto. I much liked Crackdown, the sequel didn't improve on the original and didn't fix any of it's flaws, it instead made them worse.

@mosdl:  God of War is God of War. It's not so much about expanding, then it is about refining.

Anyways Assassin's Creed didn't have wasted potential in my opinion. It was a good game in its own right, and it led to the significantly better Assassin's Creed 2.

@DrFidget: Heavy Rain mainly suffered through a terrible script and bad directing. The fact that it's story is being praised as some of the best in gaming, proves how low the standards of storytelling in gaming are becoming.

If Heavy Rain was a live-action movie, it would be a laughable exercise by move critics and cinephiles everywhere.

I had played 1/2 in their HD remixes before playing 3 and the jump from 1 to 2 was pretty amazing.   I was expecting a similar jump for 3

I doubt that many games can have more wasted potential than Spore did.

I loved Dark Void, despite it being a heaping pile of faeces containing many bugs, and Far Cry 2 was one of the most dull games i've ever played. That game had no flow to it.

I'm rooting for Brütal Legend, that game should've been a competitor for GOTY, not complete badness.

Runner-ups include ProtoType, Lost Planet (the first one, I haven't played the second outside of the co-op demo and that was fun), Metal Gear Solid 4 (albeit maybe MGS2 had screwed MGS4 from the start,) ModNation Racers, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and Guitar Hero Aerosmith. There are more I can't think of at the moment, but oh well.

(I'll provide reasons for any game somebody thinks reached its potential.)

APB... there's still time, and I really hope they pull something amazing out of that. But at the moment... it's very bland.

@Sincillian: That was a very intelligent video commentary for Far Cry 2, unlike others I didn't hate it nor did I love it. It was a mixed experience for me, I loved how I could approach missions in the infinite amount of ways I see fit, but I hated the re-spawning enemy guard posts and how everyone wants to kill me with no explanation what so ever.

@DoctorOptimist: Yeah those 2 were some of the things I didn't like about the game. With a bit more refinement this game could have been great.

I'm gonna go ahead and say Dragon Quest IX, even though I've currently got over 100 hours on it and I still haven't beaten the story.

I really love the series and I love a lot of the ideas they have going on here for a portable MMO-lite, but the multiplayer leaves so much to be desired.  I hope when the 3DS drops its technology increase proves to be sufficient to facilitate getting games like this online and full featured.  It's a shame really with both the DS and the PSP that the wi-fi online options rarely pan out or are even worthwhile when present.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. It just wasn't as fun as the first.

Assassin's Creed II. I know I'll catch shit for this, but it just wasn't as fun as the first.

SOCOM Confrontation. It's a decent shooter, but still not as fun as SOCOM 3. And the over-the-shoulder view pisses me off.

Any local co-op RPG, like (I think) Sacred II and such, was wasted potential. I'd be so ecstatic if they even just re-released Champions of Norrath. There's currently nothing to do when you have friends over to your house but Rock Band, NBA, Madden, and fighting.

Guitar Hero 5. It's just pretty boring. There are maybe 10 good songs on-disc, and there's no reason to play through the story mode. Plus the calibration system sucks hard.

I'm sure I can come up with others.
