More specifically as you've gotten older.
For me as a kid I used to dislike stealth games. ( Metal Gear Solid notwithstanding) Now as I'm older I enjoy them a lot more. I enjoy getting stealth kills a lot more now , even though I still do enjoy going full on balls to the walls with guns.
On the other end I used to love racing games. Now a days unless its some kind of kart racer or something I have zero interest. Which is a shame because Hot pursuit looks bad ass. However I have this feeling I would get bored awfully quick.
Anyone else have a genre they can't stand playing now? or like now compared to when they were little?
Games genres you used to dislike / love and now you love/dislike?
Naw, I never really shut out genres as a whole, but I like racing games more now (post burnout paradise) than I did before. Also used to dislike DotA a little, but that was more because the learning curve was so steep and noone ever could keep their fucking fingers from typing out their rage and personal insults when you died once. League of Legends is so noob-friendly though and I'm finding myself liking it a whole lot.
Hmm, when I was young I had absolutely no interest in Racing sims (Gran Turismo series, F1 games, etc), but not too long ago I gave Forza 2 a shot and ended up enjoying it quite a bit.
Vice versa, I used to love the SNES-era of jRPGs back in the day, but I haven't really had much interest to play any (non-2D) jRPG since then. I have Lost Odyssey sitting on my shelf, but I've yet to even insert the disc into my console. To be honest, I'm not sure if it's so much my dwindling interest for the genre as it is me lacking commitment to sink time into it.
I used to like JRPGs, but now I can't stand them, do Japanese people love to grind for 20 hours that much?
" I used to like sports games a lot more than I do now. Now I just mainly play them with friends. "
I use to play a lot of sports games when I was younger but now most franchises are annualized and that put me off. Also, fighting games, I used to play a lot of them until the arcade scene died/shrunk. I liked RTS but now I don't seem to have the same coordination and speed I used to so I can't really play those anymore. I used to like jRPG but now I kinda grew tired of the formula (I still play them but they're not so big in my book as they used to).
I played very few western cRPG because most of the ones I knew were licensed games, based on traditional RPGs I played and tabletop form, but now Dragon Age is the game I want to play the most right now. I was kind of oblivious to Adventure Games until a couple of years ago but now it's my favorite genre.
Nothing really, but I find the games that get made now of days in genres that I love are so sub par that I'm losing hope in ever playing a good game in that genre again. Mainly RPG's, Space Sims, RTS and turn based strategy games. With the exception of turn based strategy and space sims, because they are pretty much dead genres now, I just find the genres are moving in a direction that is the exact opposite of what I enjoyed about them in the first place.
RPG's are being dumbed down to appeal to the console generation, and RTS are all becoming about who can micro manage 50 units and shoot off each of their unique powers the fastest instead of about any kind of deployment strategy. I don't like playing games that are about who can click buttons faster then the other guy automatically winning every time, I enjoy games that require you to use your brain to win and ones that reward the player for doing that. Something games that get made now a days never do anymore because they are trying to appeal to the lowest common idiot who plays games.
I don't think my gaming tastes have changed all that much over the years, mainly they just matured a bit, as I used to avoid the more realistic adventure genres and focused more on the comedic LucasArts stuff, while now its pretty much the other way around.
Other then that, yeah, sports games, I had some fun times with Soccer (C64), Kick Off (Amiga), Strike (SNES) and even FIFA Soccer (the one without a year number) and NHL 94 (SNES), today I don't really care about that genre any more. I don't think that is so much because my taste have changed, but because the games have. It got a whole lot closer to modeling how real sports looks like and I just don't like real sports, I preferred the more abstract sprites, but as I haven't checked out a sports game in probably 10 years, who knows.
Those aside, I used to dislike RPGs, but now I have certainly warmed up to the newer western ones (Mass Effect), but again, its not my taste that changed, but the games, as they removed more and more RPG stuff and replaced it with actual gameplay. I still can't stand jRPGs and never even finished a single one of those.
I've mostly moved away from mech games. Armored Core 4 was the last I played. ( I played it to death I might add. the only achievements I didnt get were the silly ones (S-RANK EVERY FUCKING MISSION IN THE GAME!) and a secret acheivement that I didn't get either. Also i didn't get the A-Rank every mission because there are a couple that are downright ridiculous to do "just right" - I.e. the one where you fight all the remaining top-ranking ravens) Of course... if something interesting comes around I guess we'll see?
Also, JRPG's. I thought FInal Fantasy 8 and Legend of Dragoon were T3H GR8 GREAT3ST GREATEST EVER but going back they just look incredibly boring, terrible ps1 graphics aside.
On the other hand I used to hate RTS's (with the exception of Tiberian Sun and Age of Empires 1 and 2), but since C&C3 I find myself fascinated with them, especially Starcraft 1 and 2, Homeworld( an oldie) and Civ 5. I've been saving up to get a great video card that will last me a while and will nab SC2 and Civ5 the moment I can.
And my guilty pleasure is playing super metroid hacks haha.

Non-arcade kinds of sports games. My dad and I used to play a lot of games like Madden and NASCAR together when I was younger. Now, without having anyone to play multiplayer on those games with, I just can't get into them.
I used to love Strategy games (especially RTS) but these days I barely touch them... for some reason I'm not even entirely sure myself, lol.
I used to dislike both stealth and RPG games. Now, I feel much more satisfied having made progress in a stealthy manner. It just feels good, entering an area, wiping out the hostiles, and moving on. In fact, it has made me replay Hitman: Blood Money, as I did not appreciate it as a stealth game. To me, it was always a game where you just went around shooting guards in the face with a silenced pistol. I used to disregard most RPG games, such as Oblivion, as being for geeks. However, I saw a preview for Oblivion in a magazine, liked it, and bought a copy in my second week of 360 ownership. And I have no regrets with that, as I love truly getting behind a character.
Used to hate RPGs mainly because I would usually watch my friend play them and watching him play RPGs was pretty boring, but after actually playing some a few years back, I love them.
Used to like (I don't think I ever really loved them) FPS games. Most of them (not all of them) are about the same to me now.
FPS games - I used to hate them so much. I suppose it was the whole thing of not seeing my character and surroundings but now it's not so much I "LOVE" them now but I accept them as good games now.
I really have fallen out with RTS games in the past few years. Maybe it was the realization that I'm terrible at them and skirmish AI isn't fun anymore. On the other hand, now that I actually know how to play them, I really enjoy most Fighting Games.
Well, fighting games were usually an unexplored genre for me, and the games I did try never really pulled me in or had me wanting to learn more. Then I played Blazblue. 'Nuff said.
As for the other way, I only ever really play shooters if a number of friends have the same game. Otherwise I really don't bother unless it brings something worthwhile and interesting (yet to play Vanquish; it's a possible for now).
I liked JRPGs, but no one's made a good one for years. Then I realized that all the old ones I liked were all overrated games anyway.
And it's not a genre, but I used to PC game all the time as a kid, then I switched to consoles. I guess because now that graphics on anything you play is going to be pretty similar the convenience of consoles has been reducing my PC game time significantly. Though Steam has rekindled some interest these past few years.
I used to hate puzzlers, because I was never able to figure them out, but now I have the patience for them, and I can get pretty addicted to them pretty easily now.

These days I just can't be bothered anymore - maybe since I'm not so contempt anymore with playing PC games on the low settings =/ "This too actually. I played the hell of out Age of Empires 1 and 2, and Starcraft back in the day, but it seems only turn based stuff will engage me. Loved Civ V this year, and I haven't played nearly as much Starcraft 2 as my 10 year old self would have.

I was into FPS games when I first started playing online. Couldn't care less for them now.
The RTS genre has been dead for a long time for me as well, but I could see myself getting back into them someday.
On the other hand, I was always turned off by even the idea of a strategy RPG until I discovered Disgaea. I've been a fan
ever since. :)
I used to fucking LOVE RTS games (Age of Empires was my favorite series). Then I discovered RPGs and open world action games. Life changing. I bought Starcraft Battlechest for the first time a couple weeks back for the hell of it and stopped playing after the first two missions. Found it flat out boring. Farewell, my opinions of yesteryear...ye shall be sort of not really missed.
i never liked RPG's a lot but now i like them more. there are a couple that i like, like fable, oblivion, star wars: knights of the old republic (just got it from steam sale). i guess you would call them american RPG.
genres that i still don't like are RTS. i don't like them all that much. i find them boring to play. i usually lose when i play them.
I used to hate the RTS genre until I started playing StarCraft about a year ago. Still playing that gorram game to this very day >.>

Its all about deploying your units at the right time, putting them in the right spots and staying calm/organized,
although its kinda idiot friendly because of the low number of units.
