I mainly play FPS games, but want to explore other genres. Of course, I don't only play FPS games, but I play them the most. I'm open to anything, and have enjoyed other genres, but always get pulled back into FPS games because of friends and new releases. What genres would you recommend?

Platforms? PC, PS4, etc.?

I literally recommend all genres. I can't narrow it down any further without knowing more about what you like in games.

I'm only going to recommend modern games here...

The best not-shooter RPGs for a new entrant: Witcher 3 (May be better after the Witcher 2, but definitely not the original Witcher), Skyrim

The best adventure game for a new entrant: The Book of Unwritten Tales?

The best 4x strategy game for a new entrant: Civilization VI

The best RTS for a new entrant: Starcraft 2?

The best platformer for a new entrant: Well, Mario obviously, but based on your platforms, try Rayman Legends or Shovel Knight

The best open-ended minecraft-like kinda thing: Terraria

The best driving game: Forza Horizon 3

The best ARPG: Diablo 3

Could you tell us what your favorite FPS are? Knowing what you like in that genre could help make recommendations for other genres. Like if you enjoy Overwatch you might also like Rocket League, which also has a bright, slick, aesthetic, loot boxes, and a similar structure of short competitive games.

If you're more into open-world FPS like Far Cry then you might like Horizon: Zero Dawn, which has a fair amount in common.

Knowing what you like in one genre will make it easier to suggest stuff in others.

I started writing this list and then realised it's a pretty difficult thing to respond to.

What type of other genre are you interested in?

I'd honestly go straight to The Witcher 3 to open you up to other genres. But you might want to start with something semi-familiar like Gears of War 4, which is a shooter, just not an FPS.

My actual recommendation would be to look through the longer lists on sites like IGN or PC Gamer and see what strikes your fancy - watch a Quick Look over here of those games and see if you think you'd enjoy them.

@bigsocrates: Some of the FPS I play are CoD (Campaign and Zombies), Battlefield 4, CS, Sniper Ghost Warrior, Overwatch, Battleborn, & Titanfall 2. I had a really good time with Doom 2016 and Shadow Warrior 2.

Don't go crazy now. Try branching out into 3PS first. They're pretty much the same as FPS, but look at them from a whole different perspective.

I've heard that Super Mario Bros. is dope.

On a more serious note, buy that DMC: Devil May Cry remaster if you haven't played it. It's got good action, good production value, and isn't too long.

I should actually rephrase my question I meant recently I've been playing mostly FPS games. I have played Mario lol and a lot of classic games.

If you like FPS, then you must like a challenge

Try dark souls, bloodborne or nioh

Very difficult games

Im like you, FPS are my thing. It can be quite difficult exploring other genres, due to that satisfying combat loop which you get from shooters.

However, I still enjoy third person action games, and I love the Souls series. I will be starting Nioh in a week or two, so I hoping thats my cuppa too.

Play X-com Enemy Unknown. I started it on Ps3 earlier this year as my first turned based strategy game, and it's amazing.

I don't know if I would recommend Witcher 3 straight off. If someone has been mainly playing shooters, games with generally tight gameplay and feedback, Witcher 3 will probably feel lacking. Of course, if you want a real change of pace and want to see some good stories then totally check it out.

Metal Gear Solid V is a really great, well playing game. I think there will be a Steam sale starting this Thursday so you can probably grab it pretty cheap on PC then, and I think it goes on sale fairly often for PS4 too.

I imagine you've played it, but Portal is pretty much the closest to an FPS without being an FPS. In a similar vein, I'd recommend Talos Principle and Antichamber.

There's also a number of Serious Sam spinoffs, including Serious Sam DD (witch is actually pretty great, despite the crappy graphics). There's also the newly released Bogus Detour, which I haven't actually played yet, so I can't vouch for it.

Also, DRL (previously known as DoomRL) is all the things you'd expect from Doom, except in the format of a turn-based roguelike.

There's also a bunch of third-person shooters that control very similarly to FPSs; I'd definitely recommend Dead Space.

MGSV and Batman Arkham Asylum are good suggestions. Maybe GTAV?

HITMAN. It's ultimately more of a puzzle game than a shooter, but you can still have some good ol' fashioned gun fun if you want to create some anarchy.
