There is definitely a style associated, but not a genre.
Is "arcade" a genre not just a platform?
So, I was playing Pac Man CE DX and was wondering what the hell genre it fits into and I couldn't place one. I asked some peeps from this site and they said it was "arcade". I personally don't believe this to be a genre, but they insist it is. I say it is just an excuse to put games that don't fit into other genres so well.
What do you think? What exactly makes a game an "arcade" game, and no just being on a cabinet is not enough. User Tiwi says it is a game designed to take your money, but useually those also fall into other genres. Like X-Men wants your quarters, but it is a beat em' up.
Also if you can play exactly where Pac Man goes, say so.
No...it may be dying a slow, painful death, but the Arcade Systems are still a platform and until they stop making arcade systems or games for them, it is and shall always be a platform.
This." There is definitely a style associated, but not a genre. "
Also, I wouldn't refer to it as a single "platform". Individual arcade hardware is. I wouldn't strictly call "arcade" a platform. I would however call CPS3 or Naomi platforms.
(that someone is you, btw)
