Hey everyone. I was just reading the reports on the new Tomb Raider movie and it got me thinking, when are we going to get movies based on the games industry. Hollywood has done films based on other indusrties, for example:

Boogie Nights-Porn Industry
Wall Street-Finance
Wag the dog-media and politics

At the moment Hollywood seems obsessed with game adaptations but do you guys think there is a place for a movie/movies based on events in the game industry? Key moments i can think of that could make great films are:

West/Zampella VS Activision
Gerstmann-gate
Sony vs GeoHot, Anonymous and other hackers

So do you guys have any other events that could make for great films?
What genre would they occupy?
When would we see the first industry movie? 5-10 years or sooner?

I'm not sure that Hollywood would greenlight that movie anytime soon. Their attitude would be something like, "Who cares? They're just fucking video games." Man, it really pisses me off that this is the attitude many people have about video games.

I don't think any of those moments you posted would make for good movies at all. A movie on the video game industry would be boring as fuck unless they gave it the Social Network treatment. And even then it would probably not be a good movie.

King of Kong is a thing.

Its really hard to make something compelling that, in the physical world, is a bunch of people hunched over a controller. True fact. King of Kong worked only because it still required real human interaction via arcade.

That's not really about the industry, though.

Something dramatic needs to happen to compell a videogame industry story forward. Like a cartell or a secret assassination. The industry just isn't that dramatic. The dramatic stuff happens in the games.Short of the Activision sweatshops, there's just not much to work with.

I don't really see the appeal in a Gerstmann-gate film. Actually, none of those really sound like they could carry a feature film. Maybe something like the early days of Atari and all the crazy shit those guys were getting up to, or Ralph Baer's story.

I think so. Either way it's not happening anymore, unless someone revives it.

The Bombcast speculation about it sounded eerily similar to The Social Network, in retrospect. Maybe in light of that film's success, it's more likely to get made.

They were going to make an Atari movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but I don't think anything came of it.  I'm not sure how riveting a movie about making games would be.  I think I'd rather see a movie about robot ninjas and hot babes.

they made a movie on facebook. i'm sure they can make a movie about something in the video game industry.

I can't think of anything specific but if something like pirates of silicon valley could be made then there should be room for a video game industry related movie.

No idea, but I'm still developing Atari: The Movie: The Game until I hear otherwise.

You know, every once in a while a truly great movie comes out of Hollywood, but for the most part its all shit, so lets not get the gaming industry tied up in that, and just focus on making/buying/playing video games mmmkay?

@buzz_clik: for the sake of obviousness, will this movie be getting a game, possibly titled 'Atari: The Game: The Movie: The Game'?

@alittler:

If you want it to go big, you do. It's hard to think of any huge movies that evaded the MPAA. It's kind of like finding an AO game: you won't, probably because so many people require the status quo.

I think a movie about the near collapse of the industry in the 80s could be interesting...

I totally agree, but you've just reminded me of something else. I can't believe I forgot to mention the Commercial Breaks documentary! While not technically a movie, it's an (old) interesting look at a couple of software companies from my youth, Ocean and Imagine, and how one flourished and the other disappeared up its own bum.
