Almost exactly one year ago Nintendo was busy exercising an incredibly out-of-touch effort to shut down the charity-driven Smash Brothers tournament at the popular Vegas-based fighting game event "Evolution," only to call off the hounds after receiving a minor public relations ass-kicking as soon as their demands hit social media. After a few hours of criticism, Nintendo ultimately decided to get out of the way, and the tournament carried on successfully.
In the year following that success, we have seen Nintendo devote plenty of advertising outlining their desire to implement more competitive elements into the upcoming Smash Brothers: Needs A Subtitle for Wii U and 3DS, as well as host an official tournament for it at E3 2014. Now things have perhaps gone full circle, as on the eve of Evolution 2014, Nintendo is once again being associated with the event--this time as an official sponsor.
What a difference a year makes?
