I just got a 3DS and i want to dive into the back catalog of DS games i missed out on. I like a wide verity of games so feel free to recommend just about anything. I would like something with good online play. so im thinking Mario Kart DS for starters.

Picross 3D
that game scares me... i watched the quick look and was completely lost.
Ghost Trick. That is the only DS game you need to play...
Oh and maybe the Castlevania games and Laytons and Bowser's Inside Story.
It's extremely easy to jump into, the tutorials do a great job of helping you understand the rules.@Rolyatkcinmai said:

Other amazing titles:
Pokemon Black
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Ace Attorney series
Professor Layton series
Elite Beat Agents
GTA: Chinatown Wars
Scribblenauts 2
New Super Mario Bros.
Ghost Trick
999
Mario & Luigi - Bowser's Inside Story
Chrono Trigger
Mario Kart
Super Mario 64 DS
Phoenix Wright? Hotel Dusk? Legend of Zelda? Golden Sun?
Those are just a few that I'll get whenever I get a DS system, anyway...
- Dragon Quest anything
- Final Fantasy anything
- Fire Emblem anything
- Game & Watch Collection
- Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (notice the lack of "anything")
- Kirby
- Phantom Hourglass
- Lufia
- Mario anything
- Meteos
- Metroid anything
- Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword
- TWEWY
- WarioWare
- Sonic Rush
- Professor Layton anything
Elite Beat Agents is still one of the systems best games. It's such a unique rhythm game that really takes advantage of the hardware. Meteos is also great (I remember hearing the Disney sequel may actually be a better game). Also, trauma center is a fun, interesting game.
Phoenix Wright 1 - 3 & Apollo Justice are some of my favourite games of all time. If you can find them then definitely give it a shot.
Pokemon games are always solid. Especially the most recent ones.
Picross3D
Ghost Trick. Incredibly charming puzzle game with a strong narrative and characters.

It breaks you in really slowly and it's actually a lot easier to grasp than to do. Very addictive.
The Phoenix Wright games are perhaps my favorite. Other than that, I really liked Picross 3D, Super Scribblenauts, and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
I bought Picross 3D. i am starting to get it. however for right now im drawing the line at slicers. i dont think i get enough yet to dive into that shit.
Hey manbro, let me break you in on this whole reality of DS games.
you see there are many who feel to look past the reality of things and subject their own vile ideas of what the DS is used for
but with my sovereign interest I will bring you to the light
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
take into it a stride and be one with the reality and forth be with the ds
two screen alternate reality does not equate to dual realisms
Strange Journey is the one and true
she will be true to you and dress you in the finest silks and myrrh
and be forever exalted
so says I the seer
also Trauma Center Under the Knife 2 will not betray you
neither will Ghost Trick

I highly recommend The World Ends With You and SMT Devil Survivor.
Devil Survivor is getting a 3D re release later this year.
The 3DS was my first foray back into portable systems so I was in a similar position.
I ended up buying Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Professor Layton and the Curious Village and the Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass.
I would highly recommend all three of them
You wanted variety, so here are the ones that I can think up:
Any of the Phoenix Wright games (if you haven't played any of them yet, start with the first one)
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin/Dual Strike (IMO Days of Ruin is better, a lot more balanced gameplay-wise)
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Pokemon Black/White
