Skill based games like Super Meat Boy and Hotline Miami?

Hi,

I'm really loving skill based indie games like Hotline Miami, Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy. Games where you have to learn a specific game mechanic and over time get better but which aren't frustrating due to insta-respawn or randomization as in BoI.

Does anyone know of any similar games I can maybe pick up on Steam? I've had a look but I can't really find anything.

Thanks!

Super Hexagon is amazing; after playing it for a while, I really felt myself getting more proficient at hexagoning. I got about half way through the third level, then I decided to go back to the first level, and in comparison, it just felt like it was in slow motion. It's honestly a really great game for feeling like your actual physical skills are increasing.

I wouldn't really call Hotline Miami a skill based game. But if you're looking for those insta-respawn games, probably might want to look into Trials Evo Gold that just came out on steam, and I also find that Trackmania kinda scratches that itch for me. Maybe some Bit.Trip as well.

Spelunky seems to fit in that category.

Spelunky has a much harsher penalty for failure than either of those games though...

Dustforce is very similar to SMB and just about as good, too.

OP mentioned liking Binding of Isaac in his post, that seems like a fair point of comparison to Spelunky.

Just played a bit of Bit.Trip Runner and love it! Reminds me a ton of Vib Ribbon which was one of my favorite games on the PS1.

VVVVV is £1.99 in the sale. Hmmm. Maybe I should just buy every game that has a cameo in SMB!

Super House of Dead Ninjas is my current time-killer that fits the profile, but I'd put votes in for La Mulana and Spelunky as well.

Fire Emblem tries to remove a lot of luck from its systems. Yea, there are times when the RNG will screw you over (I have missed a heal in Thracia 776), but that doesn't happen very often and the systems are transparent enough that you can plan around a lot of this.

Have you checked out multiplayer games like Starcraft, DoTA, League of Legends, and Counter Strike?

As far as single-player goes, Dustforce, FTL, Civilization, and just about any platformer.
