You have to have a wireless connection set up. Once you have a wireless connection set up, you can connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (I think it's under Multiplayer Brawl).
You should be able to connect, where you will then select your gameplay mode.
After you select your character, you will be put in a "practice lobby" until Nintendo finds other players online for you to battle.
