Now that Super Mario Galaxy 2 has finally been released, and before I jump into it, I would like to name my top 10 Mario games to date, with the last one being New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I would love to hear your guys top 10 Mario games as well, since SMG 2 has been getting stunning reviews, and even replacing some classics on various peoples lists. I have now played Galaxy 2.

I've always thought Super Mario World 2 had the best level design of any 2D mario game. Super Mario 64, however, may have the worst. Open-ended exploration doesn't really suit the franchise at all.

Only having played Super Mario Galaxy 2 for a few hours, I'm really having trouble placing it into my top ten, so I'll leave it out (for now):

SMG2 is definitely an awesome game. Since I just got my Wii I've played both SMG and SMG2 back to back, I'm impressed with how well the first holds up, as well as how the second one built up that foundation. I'd love to have them both in my top 10 if I ever did one.
But Mario 3, and one are strong competition. I'm not actually the biggest fan of SMW.
All this said, why the hell did all you guys forget...

@Godzilla_Sushi: its not a Mario game, its an RPG, sure that game is probably one of the greatest RPGs ever created, but Mario games are platformers, and developed by Nintendo.

Mario RPG isnt a mario game, its a spin off rpg game made by square, these are games that are in the main series, which are platformers, such as why mario kart isnt on here neither. Not sure why most people cant get that through their skull.
Hard to put them in any specific order, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Bros 3 and Yoshis Island are pretty much on the same level and they are all pretty damn close to perfection. While I really love the open worldmap of Super Mario World, I consider the rest of the game (extras, levels, etc.) to be not quite up to SMB3, especially considering the much more powerful hardware. Galaxy was a bit of a disappointment after Mario64, to linear and lacked the playground aspect of Mario64. Sunshine was odd, I had plenty of fun with the water gun, but the game had to many annoyances, time based levels and bad swimming mechanics. New Super Mario Bros DS was just lazy, a complete downgrade to anything SMB3, World or the others did, biggest Mario disappointment so far. SML, SML2, SMB2, SMBLL, etc. where all great, just not as special as the first three I mentioned.
I don't think I've even played 5 Mario games (I know) so I'm one of those kids who had a 3D Mario game be my first game in the franchise like the bombcast talked about. But it wasn't Sunshine but 64, so there's that.
